Hi everyone,

My name is Adrian, I am a stone mason by trade. I like all kinds of music but mainly bands such as muse, Metallica, jamiroquai, prodigy and all dance music groups,

I have an average system. I run my playstation 3 into an arcam 80 amp. This on turn powers my DIY granite speakers. 20mm thick Angola black granite floor standers. They have scanspeak tweeters and volt woofers. I will post pictures of them in the DIY section when I am able to.

Welcome Adrian, you're not far form me (near Rochester). I've not been here long but enjoy looking in. I have to comment on your speakers though, I've never heard of anything like that before but they look amazing. They put my recent Frugal Horn build to shame!

I am just lucky enough to work with granite everyday. A very good friend of mine is an accoustic engineer. He designed them, I built them.

I am not that knowledgable when it comes to technical speak.
What's a horn build?

Hi Adrian, it's a DIY horn speaker (in contrast to a sealed box) http://www.frugal-horn.com/ I've not had them long but the sound is amazing from a 4" full range driver. What drive units are in yours?

I have 7" volt woofers and scanspeak tweeters, think they are mid price range, cost me £700 for all of the electrics, woofers, tweeters, insulation. The port is a cardboard pipe that runs three quarters of the height of the speaker from its base,

Did you have to build your speakers from scratch or was it it an all in one kit.

Hi Adrian

The wood (18mm ply) came in a kit and I sourced my own drivers and damping material - no binding posts or internal wiring because I'm running the drivers straight to the amp through the mouth of the horn at the bottom. Very easy to put together but I nearly rushed it before realising that the baskets of my 4" drivers would be buried in a 18mm baffle so I had to do some rasping and scalloping to give them some room to 'breathe'. The good thing about them is that you can try out different drivers (Fostex or Alpair) but my cheapo Chinese ones sound great at the moment (pretty sure they're not 'better than Lowther' as the sales listing said - particularly as they don't do 4" drivers). You can also 'tune' them to your tastes or room characteristics by fiddling with the damping. Some people use them with a subwoofer and some with supertweeters but that sort of defeats the object of a crossover-less full range driver. That said I might knock up some tweeters, they should be cheap enough.

Yours are intriguing, I've honestly seen nothing like them before.

I'm glad you sold your Yaqin James. I was hovering around it for a while - I'd like to try valves but I really don't know between that, an old quad or a bigger t-amp like the Topping TP60.
