Sydney moving to Glasgow

Hello people,

Nice to be on the forum. I'm in sydney at the moment, but am moving to Glasgow in 5 weeks with my Scottish wife and soon to be Scottish 9 month old son. I've been into Musical Fidelity amps since I got my first system 20 years ago and have never owned another brand since. I started with a B1 and then a B200x. Then Joe Gallart from Homescape AV hooked me up with an A100 about 18 months ago. I've got a 1980's Planar 3 TT with a couple of mods, an Ortofon Bronze MM cart, and a home made phono pre and a pair of Richter Wizard (made in Australia) speakers made in 1992. I tend only to play vinyl and MP3 or AIFF these days, and I've got a nice Apogee A/D D/A which is great for listening and digitising. Music wise, I'm open to anything from Mahler to Tijuana brass, to Sergio Mendes, to Wings, earth wind and fire, to Jimmy Cliff, to Bowie to Kate Bush, to PJ Harvey, to Serge Gainsbourg, to Charles Trenet, to Count Basie, to Glenn Miller, to the Arcade Fire and most of anything in between and around as long is appeals to my wankerishly discerning ear. Anyway I could go on for hours, and since I am now under the influence of a couple of single malts, I should stop as a courtesy to you all.

Thanks for the welcome gents. I'll be sure to make contact when I'm in Glasgow. And in answer to the oft posed questions about why I would move from Sydney to Glasgow and do I know what the weather is like...

I can assure you all that 'the weather' was not on the list of reason 'why' anyone would move to Scotland. Except to say that the sun in summer in Australia is scorching for about 5 months of the year and I'm happy not to have to deal with that for a while. Otherwise, yes I'm well aware the weather is generally scheizer. I remember when I first moved to Edinburgh about 14 years ago. We'd had about a month of 18-25 degree clear and beautiful days (winter in Sydney is amazing) and then I arrive in Edinburgh to 2 weeks straight of 12 degree 'dreech' as I believe you call it there.

So I am no stranger to Scotland. I've spent 2 years in Ed and about 6 months in Glasgow over various trips (including getting snowed in around Xmas 2010). I've frequented Ashton lane many times, had a whisky with Alasdair Gray at 'the Chip', I got married upstairs at Oran Mor, I've swum in meltwater in Glen Etive, seen the birthplace of the first governor of NSW in Ulva (an island off Mull), surfed at Thurso, and witnessed a street fight while walking away from a Barrowlands gig with my mate fae Shetland, and had a honeymoon on Loch Linnhe. Plenty more to come Im sure...

Trevor ~ Seems like you've sampled the ways of the wild west and bashed a Munro or two already and know the jungle that is Glasgow pretty well,
there i thought it was one of those 'girl meets boy' thing, your wife hopped down under backpacking, meets native gringo who follows his heart emigrating to be with his sweetheart.

The bit you mentioned i love the most is the Ashton Lane area, love the bohemian feel to that quarter, delightful little shops and good pub,
i like the Brel for intimate concerts in the conservatory, the cinema across the cobbles is just fantastic, big comfy velvet seats like in the old days,
discovered Sam Carter playing the Oran Mor,part of the Celtic Connections Festival, you should try to catch the festival if you can, always welcoming and a great way to blow away the 'Dreich' post festive wintry month of January, and if you like the west end, there's always the West End Festival, it's where the native Neds mingle with the arty farty student population, in between that there are folk like me who is ordinary (stop sniggering all you batids out there) and grannies taking their grand weans out for the day, with it's close proximity of Kelvingrove Park and people chillin' on the grass from their day's exertion, Gibson street and Otago street...etc..etc.. are closed to traffic and there are stalls and music everywhere, incidently it's on from 12 - 7pm this Sunday if locals have a day free.

P.S. An Aussie and a mate fae Shetlands is not recommended to be walking the streets of Bridgeton, :) it's a pretty gritty part of the east end.

And, the Barrowland is in The Calton not Bridgeton, two totally different part of Glasgow both of which are the complete polar opposite of each other in a 'cultural' sense even though they are less than a mile apart although you wouldn't want to be walking through any of those areas at night on your todd (own).

Now, The West Coast Of Scotland has to be one of the most beautiful places on the planet and I can completely understand someone going there to live.

The Glenfinnan monument and The Road to the Isles and Glencoe are just wonderful parts of Scotland.

Those above are my favourites places along with the Hebrides, Barra, Vatersay and The Uists in particular.

Welcome and glad you're going to have some good mates before you relocate. Make sure you wrap up warm though :)

MF in this country doesn't have the same sort of desirability when fairly new and certainly doesn't amongst otherwise great dealers, who've fallen foul of the owner for any reason that takes his whim over the years. Being flogged through the box-shifters otherwise known as Sevenoaks doesn't help the cause either. A shame, because some of the products aren't bad at all. No doubt the Scottish Mafia will take you under their wings and 'broaden your horizons' gear-wise :lol:

Hello again gents.

And thanks again for the welcome. Just thought I'd update my status to 'Lives: Glasgow". I've also acquired Struth's MF A1000 which is now paired up with a lovely set of JR149s and knocking my socks off with MP3s (via an Apogee DAC - all vinyl etc is still in transit).

A big thants to Struth too for trusting me and hanging onto the amp while being tempted every which way by willing suitors.

Once I'm off baby duty, I'll put out a call for a west end drink.
