Ever fancied yourself as a budding Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher? Well, in 2012 Ford took one of their Formula Ford Ecoboost single seat racing cars and thought, why don't we make a street legal version? Ah, you might say, this isn't unique, it has been done before right? No it hasn't. There are small, cottage industrial types producing exhilarating track day cars such as the KTM Crossbow, Ariel Atom and the bonkers Radical SR8, all of which are at the peak of their art, but, they were not designed from the ground up to be racing cars whereas the Ford has been.

One of the many finely honed components in this amazing car eclipses all others, and that is the engine. Instead of the usual, tuned 1.6 litre Ecoboost engine which can be found in its brethren running in the Formula Ford racing series, this car has been fitted with Fords diminutive 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder Ecoboost powerplant more commonly installed in the Fiesta and Focus. The engine itself is a bog standard unit which has had a bigger turbo strapped onto it (sourced from a 1.6 Ecoboost motor), plus Ford have fiddled with the ECU and it sounds fabulous. The stats for this car are astounding: 175bhp (Ford liberated 205bhp for the Nurburgring special), 0-60 in under four seconds and a top speed just shy of 160mph in a car weighing in at around 500 kilos. Ford took the car to the Nurburgring in Germany where, in the hands of test driver Nick Tandy, it posted a phenomenal lap time of 7 minutes 22 seconds. This is incredible for such a small engined vehicle and what's more the car will return 56mpg at a constant 70mph. Rumour has it that the project has been so successful Ford are seriously considering a limited production run of cars to be sold to the public. Let's hope so, eh?
