Not my triumph, unfortunately, but still a good story, and definitely not in the car boot pishanto category!
The guy who bought by preamp told me that he was at a recent car boot sale week before last, and was having a look at some ratty old turntables and asked the seller if he had anything else to sell. He said "well, there is this... don't think it works" and produced an Audio Research VS-110, minus some driver tubes and with a scratch on the LHS cheek, but complete with 8x KT-120s. The sale was agreed for... £230 (!!!).
When I spoke to him, he wondered if I had heard of it and was stunned to hear that it retailed for c5k, and was worth at least £1800 s/h!. Replacements for the missing driver tubes were sourced for £40, and the only fault with the item was the main fuse needed to be replaced. It is currently sitting in his system sounding absolutely stunning.
Lucky bugger...wish this happened to me.
Cheers,
Alex
