Tighten up bass on me 1210

Hi all,
Current techie spec as follows:

Isonoe Feet
Mike New Bearing
Timestep PSU
Jelco 750 arm
Denon DL-103R Cart with extra weight to the head
Acromat mat (using prit stick to bond to the platter lol)
Trichord Dino using Plus power supply and the better lead.

I used to have a Denon DL-160 which I liked but prefer the DL-103R, much bigger sound for me and full on.

However I really need to tighten the bass up a little.

Would I be right in assuming a record clamp would help with this?

If so which one would be best for me?

A clamp/weight can help tighten things up down below but sometimes at the cost of other things like 'openness' and musical flow....

Other than that, look at your amp/speaker match and positioning?

Nothing wrong with the softer stock 3mm mat in fact it has always given me the best result to my ears over any other mat I've tried and I've tried all the usual suspects. (The thicker Techie 'heavy' mat that KAB do is just too thick and hard ).

I would say put the turntable on a good support, then worry about a record weight. The latter will help, the former can make a massive difference.

If you're using the standard arm and headshell, then that's a weak area. A Jelco 750D would give you tighter bass, and failing that a good strong headshell like a Sumiko.

x2, provided the T/T is set up correctly the Techie has very tight bass, l would look elsewhere.

+1 for careful siting of ANY turntable, isonoes or not...

I do remember Grommit (I think) preferring the VA/OL feet to the Isonoes for bass reproduction reasons - I'm sure that's right, but it's a year or so since he? posted this and you're going to have to trawl through back threads to find it.


One final thing - the 103 isn't so low in compliance it needs something the mass of an iron girder to hold it (now there's a thought :eyebrows:), so you could remove the extra weight and rebalance. If you're using damping in the arm, reduce it if possible - Marco HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

+1 for checking the set up.
From the spec of your deck you should have a pretty potent bass.
Not used the mat you have so don't know if that is a factor.

Is your other equipment up to the job?
Have you ever had better bass out of your system?
Just a thought. ;)

Extra weight to the head never helped me, you're better off with a stronger/heavier headshell.

The acromat itself is great, but it just isn't capable of damping the stock platter.
Try the "old" stock rubber mat instead (thick version)

But this is nothing new, I saw a few people already mentioned these facts ;)

I reckon that using a suitable SUT into the Dino, rather than using its MC gains stage, would bring about the improvements you're looking for.

That Techie setup should have great bass - look elsewhere for the problem(s), I reckon.

If you are using the arm cable Jelco supply get rid, its closed in, lacking in detail and the bass is overly lumpy.

I would try a Bruil weight http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/puck.html

If the deck isn't sitting on the glass coasters from Isonoe or the shelf isn't heavy glass then I would try the glass coasters. Sitting it on wood isn't an ideal match in my experience and if you are using those hard rubber feet Vantage Audio and numerous others sell (including Origin Live) then that would not be good - as in my experience using them destroys the sound the turntable can make.

Arm set up VTA etc are crucial too as is correct phonostage loading.

+1 Glass is recommended as best under the Isonoes (mine are on a glass shelf). Arm set up VTA etc crucial !!

That's simply because the concept is flawed: glass coasters, quite simply, aren't enough. You need an equipment rack with full glass shelves, where the kit is properly supported on its full dimensions by glass, before the sonic benefits, in conjunction with Isonoes, are accurately realised ;)

The Sumiko shell comes with decent wires as supplied I believe (unless you have the arm silver wired, in which case you could consider changing them.

As for screws and nuts, a number of sellers do kits of several 2.5mm hex-head bolts in different lengths, washers and nuts and all for several quid, and I'd suggest you getting some of these. In fact, I think Transfi (Terminator tonearm fame) used to sell these for a fair price on ebay and I'm sure it was Vic who supplied my last set a while ago when I needed really long bolts for the Stilton OC9...
