North Wales exile living in Essex :doh:

Kit (and happy enough with it too):


Currently in storage (no space to set up properly):- Icon Audio Stereo 40i -> LV Auditoriums
Currently in use:- FLAC -> NAS: Synology DS 413j -> SB Touch -> CA DacMagic -> Woo Audio 6 -> Sennheiser HD650.

Mostly listen to folk/acoustic but also punk/alternative - most played at the moment is Jake Bugg, Katzenhammer, Imelda May, old favs like Martin Stephenson and the Daintees, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen

Q. Do I consider myself to be an audiophile?
A. Nope - haven't got the spare cash to spend on an expensive setup, don't have the inclination for box swapping etc, cant tell the difference between different interconnects and as for dedicated mains cables making a difference :scratch: - would rather spend my cash on cd's.

Am thinking of selling the LV Auditoriums for some ESI Unik08 monitors for small room/office. Unfortunately I don't have anywhere to demo them which is why they are in storage at father in laws house :mental:

Welcome you poor soul away from home :) Apologies, just been going through hundreds of old family photos set in and around Ruthin and Denbigh and my spirit is so homesick it ain't true (I'm a half-breed born in Aylesbury - cough - )

My advice for a simple, space saving "office" style system would be to visit a couple of pro audio shops and see what some of the better small active monitors can do for you - Yamaha have some worthy and apparently good active replacements for the highly characterful but common-as-muck NS10's and these cost around £300 the pair IIRC. proper line driver-volume controls are available for not too much if you have a single source and this is well worth looking out for. You may miss the big expansiveness of your trad system, but clarity will be good and well designed actives have excellent charms all their own, making many conventional passive systems sound smudged, vague and sloppy in comparison - just a thought if you can get a listen..

I moved down here 25 years ago and live in Romford but grew up just outside Rhyl.

I will try to get to audition some of the small active monitors - any suggestions of where to go to do this?

My mother was born in St Asaph and grew up in Rhyl.... Family roots in the LLanynys and Bodfari region further back up the valley

As for pro monitors :) I rather think you may have to check yellow pages for local shops and have a scout round for suitable shops outside of London... try Yamaha's website to see if there are any stockists of their active speakers near you..

If you don't mind separates then there's loads of stuff new and used you could consider obviously.
