Quad have never made a bad CD player! The sound is not that different to The Meridian players, i.e., clean, smooth and detailed.
The 66 was a classic implentation of a stock Philips CD player - almost insular at the time when other manufacturers were starting to tweak the designs, let alone Marantz, who cottoned on to the caps around the DAC chip and so on.
The MAIN issue with surviving 66 players is their dependance on a CLEAN mains supply. A Roxburgh style inline mains filter on just the player really will make a positive difference I found -

I used a Croft made 4A filter with mine at the time...
The exit interconnect should have ferrites on as well and wide-band cables like the Mark Grant HD1000 may definitely need them with this player I think.
This player was beautifully made and cased and if the mech is behaving still, this machine with external tweaks at least, should give a basically good sound, better than a stock Arcam Alpha player of the time, but maybe not as full bodied as the possibly overblown Marantz players, many of which having cap tweaks etc...
Link below - read through and find the Quad 66 info near the end -
