I've got a SL1210 mk2 on it's way which will be my first experience of a DD deck.

In the first instance I'm planning on sticking with the arm and adding a Sumiko headshell and a 2M Bronze, an achromat and techniboots. Is this a good way to go?

Phono stage wise I'm thinking of an Angle Audio with the battery pack to use with mu Jungson JA - 88D.

Congrats! :) The SL1210 is a great deck and DD = lock tight timing. It's built like a tank which is so reassuring when you hold one. Mad easy to use and the on the fly vta is enviable as far as other decks go. They sound nice straight out of the box, the mods you mention will improve it even more. My advise is enjoy and get to know her from stock and experience what happens and how you feel about the changes with each mod. After that you can decide how far you want to go. I've gone this route and have enjoyed every step of the journey - Welcome to the Techie club (tons of advise and experience here, just ask) all the best and enjoy the music :)

Phew that's good to know.

It's the enjoying the music bit that most appeals for me, as I found with my last turnable, cartridge, phono stage, that whilst it sounded great to me, I was never convinced I'd got it set up correctly etc and I ended up not actually listening to the tunes.

I had the very same experience as you describe.
I could never quite relax and enjoy the music.
As for mods, the techie offers endless possibilities depending on your wallet or your DIY skills.
But whichever road you decide to take, the music will always sing!

Cheers for the welcome. The Vector was great but just couldn't get away from was it level, are the feet secure, is the arm aligned, is too tight, to loose etc. I think it's the Technics sturdiness which also appeals as well as the upgrade potential, hopefully a deck to last.

I know :) I'd originally was going to just go with a Project xperience v pack but this seems the better route. I'm a bit Veruca Salt in the Gene Wilder film.

I'm not too sure about the cheaper pro-ject decks these days, as the company appears to have slightly lost focus, where the "other" firm based in and around Southend seems to have increased their focus recently... I'm sure you'll be delighted with the 2M Bronze. Not sure if you'd need the Sumiko shell with this one, since the stock shell is rigid enough and not as massy but the Sumiko does seem to be an excellent all-rounder. I'd possibly consider the exit cables to the amp at some point and even the inexpensive van Damme options I've seen on eBay seem to offer an improvement.

The 2M bronze may need some faffing about to get it to work right - don't be alarmed if the arm has to be slightly down at the back for smoothest sound, but the sound should snap into focus once you have the individual sample set right..

+1 Word !! The 2M Black is the same but boy is it worth the faffing. That snap into focus can take a while, when it does though you'll know and smile (Thank God for on the fly vta). Took me weeks to find that spot last time but boy when it finally does, there's a massive HALLELUJAH ring out from my gob followed by a nifty jig and a face like this :D not to mention never ending tune playing accompanied by lots of this :D:D:D :lol:

Got a Nagaoka MP-15 on the way and the arm off today for a J7 fettle after payday. Will see how the MP-15 goes before deciding on a bronze, black or SAE 1000

Having owned an original Vector in white, the Fx-3 and Funk platter upgrade are on my radar for the future. Is the new platter more of an Acroplat material?

Er - no. Surely Arthur must have the bloody thing finished now. But I wasn't allowed to show a photo, so I guess I'd better wait a day or two more before saying anything. This picture is just a standard white achromat on an SL1200 with an F5 arm. If you can afford the Fx3 it is going to be lovely on this deck. My prototype is quite astonishing (although definitely a prototype - things still need sorting), and I am coming round to the idea that the bass is not missing - it is right. I played John Williams and Cleo Lane last night and there is loads of bass - very deep and clear. And after reading Martin's thread about the amp he's trying, I dug out Steely Dan - Gaucho, and again - loads of bass - but different. Very hard to describe.

Thanks for the further info. Will definitely be interesting when the both are fully in production and their pricing. Just been playing some tunes (Social Distortion and MC5) and was just reveling in how much simpler it was with the Technics to just enjoy the music.

The techniboots were next on the list of things to do, but today I was looking at the feet thinking even covering them isn't going to stop me thinking, jeez they're unwieldy and not aesthetically pleasing.

These feet are rubber hard like a school erasure (rubber) and I used these to replace my Isotek feet preferring the former. Those ones at £1.99 look interesting and I may order a set plus thread bars for my LP12, my other deck... personally I would go the cheapo route first, not a alot to loose if the're not to your liking.

Oh good, you found some with male threads - I just linked to the first thing I found that was a conical shape! There are plenty with different types / sizes / materials about.

For me defo looks better and tightens up the sound with the replacement feet.
