I've got a few other bits scattered around, but my house isn't large so they are in wardrobes, loft, garage etc. Nowt special though.

WOW Andrew, you have some lovely gear there. The image on your TV screen caught my eye too, I presume it is from a documentary. Are you interested in UFO's or was it something that just happened to be on at the time?

Funnily enough I'm sat watching Ancient Aliens as we speak!

I do have an interest in the whole Alien issue but I mainly watch to hear what Georgio A Tsoukalos is going to say next! For anyone unfamiliar with the guy, you should Google him. Next to Karl Pilkngton, he has to be the most entertaining person on TV! His hair is certainly "not of this world" too.

You can say that again...

I used to run a UFO forum although I have given it up now as it all got a bit much for me. I am currently investigating a very interesting incident which occurred in Eye near Peterborough involving two security guards. I am expecting some video of the event imminently ;)

I had my own sighting when I was in Cyprus last year. I honestly thought it was some sort of aircraft at first, but it hardly moved for almost 30 minutes. Multicoloured lights with no sound at all.

It was in the middle of the night and I woke my wife to show her. She moaned at being woken up, said "very nice" and went back to sleep! I looked away for literally seconds and it was gone.

I currently have a website with an incorporated forum under construction called Beyond Dimensions.co.uk which I am aiming to have go live sometime in August. If you are interested in recounting your sighting I will let you know when it is live and you can post it up if you wish. There will also be a facility to mark the location of your sighting on a Google Maps module which is incorporated into the website ;)

Great. I'd like that hanks. You get so little light pollution in Cyprus and so little cloud, the heavens are amazing in themselves. You can easily see why the Egyptians were so fascinated in the skies. It's not too far from Cyprus and It was waking up and admiring the stars that led to the sighting.

I had a house there until January this year when I sold it: A little village called Anarita, about ten miles outside Paphos. That's where I had the sighting.
It was a lovely place to have a house, especially seeing it go from just a field to full completion (although it took them 3 years to do it). It was also stressful, risky and costly too though. It's too long a topic or here, but Cyprus can be a really dangerous place to put your money into property. I was very fortunate to get a sale. I still love Cyprus though and I still hope to retire there. There are so many empty properties, it makes far more sense to rent than buy. Having to downsize the Hifi won't be fun though. I can't tell you how much I miss my hifi when I'm abroad. If only we had better weather eh?

Cheers, Jason, although I can't really claim good taste. I've had so many different speakers, it was simply a process of elimination lol. I still hanker after a pair of La Scalas, but as you can see, I cannot house them.

Thankfully my small house has a whacking great garage, which I am going to convert. I have been putting it off for over a year but it is on the agenda. Then all I have to do is find a pair of La Scalas, some 2nd Audios and buy a big prezzie for my wife to get her over the horror of seeing the La Scalas in our house.

She didn't even mind Isobariks, but she hates the La Scalas more than anything, even the Krell.

Very nice Andrew, you like Snells/ Audionotes then:).

I love all the ones I've had. At last count, two pairs of Snell K, one AN-K, two pairs of JIIs and one pair of JIIIs. I was stupid to sell the Js, especially the boxed pair with Huygens stands. I had some Impulse H6 at the time, which were very nice and looked more at home in the room.

With Snell/Audio Note speakers, I love the lack of overhang. I remember reading that the designer was striving to make speakers that didn't store energy and I think he nailed it. My first pair of Ks were paired with Exposure amps 3/9/Dual 4 and still sounded great. Then I got a little AI series 300 followed by a 500 and I've never been without valves in one form or another.

I was a complete flat-earther up until about 3 years ago, so it's been quite an experience. Mind you, I still like Linn, Naim, Exposure and Rega kit. It has that architectural weight that gives a very "live" feel. I think that's why I have the bedroom system.

I've been heavily into the UFO side of things since the mid 70's with all of the Arthur Shuttlewood stuff and the whole Warminster 'Thing'. These days people just think I'm a loon. Ah well, I guess I'll just stick with music and hi-fi.

For what its worth I also love the Audio Note range of loudspeakers even the Zero series and back in 2003 I had a pair of AZ-2's powered by an Audion 300B SEL which was hooked up to an Alphason Sonata with a HR100SMCS arm and an Ortofon Kontrapunkt A cart. These days I've left that kind of finesse behind and moved on but I still remember that system with great affection.

People used to think I was a "loon" because I dared to say that there were better decks than the LP12 in the 80s! Maybe ETs and EPs aren't too dissimilar lol

If you are interested, take a read through this NARCAP report of an incident which occurred over Chicago's O'Hare airport on November 7th 2006. The report documents the incident and collates all the evidence and witness statements, of which there are many. I should warn you that it is a long document and quite heavy going in places, however it leaves one in no doubt that a flying object of some kind posed a significant risk to flights arriving and departing O'Hare airport on the day.

I've bought a few more things lately as I'm trying to collect the things I grow nostalgic for, as well as trying a few classic bits I've missed. I have to say I'm really taken with these:

http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac54/mrcartmenez/Hifi/image-31.jpg (http://s885.photobucket.com/user/mrcartmenez/media/Hifi/image-31.jpg.html)

Dynaco A25x. Not the prettiest, but they sound so gorgeous, I feel like saying "where have you been all my life". A full cosmetic refurb will be on the cards, but I'm reluctant to tamper with sonics when I like what I hear so much. I might get another pair to experiment on, or even stack them a la Dynamax.

I'm also enjoying a Meridian 200/203 that I picked up as a bargain. My first ever Meridian. I've heard them in demos and in others systems. Thought I'd not like them but I do.

http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac54/mrcartmenez/Hifi/image-30.jpg (http://s885.photobucket.com/user/mrcartmenez/media/Hifi/image-30.jpg.html)

Sorry about the crappy pics. I only have my Ipad right now because my laptop and camera are abroad right now. I'll photo the other stuff I've picked up when I've got my camera back here.

Edit. Sorry the Dynaco is showing upside down. It's the right way up on photobucket. I know others have had his glitch, but I don't know how to fix it. Rotating it doesn't work.

The little Myst is a very capable amp. In the right system, I can see why people don't go any further with upgrading. My first one seemed better than my last one but I think my tastes have changed a little too. I'm a bit more flat earth and the Myst is very spacious sounding. Far more powerful than 35 watts when you listen to it.

Stonking little amp. Not seen one since Mike and Mary were last down at PT - but look for one regularly. And you've had 2!!!

Yeah, my wife swears by the old chrome bumper shoe-box Naim models. Every time I've flogged them in the past, I've ended up being "persuaded" to get another pair. She has claimed the upstairs system but she hardly uses it unless she has the bits she likes, including the Naim amps "with the cute little eyes", a Xerxes, a Rega Planet and Elas.

She has a far better and more consistent pair of ears than I do. She always seems to recognise the important musical elements and I know if she comments on something being better, it's usually a lasting improvement. Like many, I often seem to mistake a difference for an improvement. Then I play a wider range of albums and realise my error. I steer away completely from A-B comparisons now because they have done me no favours in the past. Now I just live with something for a few days and listen to it on its own terms.

Nice collection of stuff Andrew.
I remember the Gale 301s were available with a cloth grille for those who didn't like the semi-industrial chic of the drilled holes. They put a little disc of the perforated sheet on the back side of the cloth because the tweeters had been voiced to fire through the stuff.

I was crazy to sell both, so it means I'm more dumb than lucky :)

Both were absolutely mint, too. The first one was bought in 1987 and I even had both MM and MC boards. I also bought a TMR tuner when Mike started re-making them in the early 90s. I never spoke to Mary but I had a few chats with Mike. Top bloke all round. He shared my passion for the blue and silver TMA3s and TMRs. Why people wanted to have them in black is beyond me. If you do track one down, I found thy loved high capacitance, spaced conductor speaker cables such as Exposure and Linn. They were also good with Supra 4 and 10.

I've never seen those ones, but I bet a pair appear now. T'is the way of the world. I think I've had 3 pairs of 301s. I re-foamed the last pair. If anyone needs foams, I found the ones for Snell type K to be a perfect fit. I find 301s very attractive sonically and aesthetically. I always fancied getting the steel grilles chromed. Next pair I get, it's a must.

My house is just too small to keep everything. I'm sure one day I'll end up on the TV show " hoarders". I have to keep loaning stuff to mates just to make room.

Couple of bits arrived yesterday. Just enjoying getting (re)acquainted. First the fab little Spicas. This is the "go faster" version with the uprated external crossover. Quite a jump in clarity and liveliness from the standard version. A pity the designer, John Bau, got fed up with the march of AV and abandoned hifi design. I've owned a couple of Spicas now including the Angelus and I reckon he was onto something. His speakers are really quite unique in the way they image and time, as well as the way they interact with a room. Anyway, enough waffle, here's a pic of the little blighters.

http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac54/mrcartmenez/Hifi/008c2e04-8517-4658-8249-fb48cffa2758.jpg (http://s885.photobucket.com/user/mrcartmenez/media/Hifi/008c2e04-8517-4658-8249-fb48cffa2758.jpg.html)

Next, an amp I've had a handful of over the years. I just love them and his will be a keeper. The original model with the jointed top plate was always the best and this one is in great condition. Forget your bloody Naits, this little baby wiped the floor with them in its day (to me anyway). Tim De P did something magic with its sound :)

The "felt" on the front of the Spicas looks very much like the Diffraction Be Gone product - though that is used just around the tweeters. Does it come off the Spicas and if so have you tested it with and without?

I've only had them a very short time but I'm genuinely surprised at how good they sound. Early days for any conclusions but I'm really struck by how "easy" they sound.

What are the NVA's is it a pair of A40's?

Andrew B

It's a p50 preamp, A30 power amp for the treble and a pair of A40s for the bass units. Im using NVA speaker cable this time too. I always use their interconnects anyway. I'll post further pics and findings tomorrow, but I already feel its something special. Anything that can improve on the Puresound would need to be :)

Andrew,

Have you tried NVA with JPW speakers?

Andrew B
05-07-2013, 23:58
I have, but it was a long time ago, so the NVA Amps were the old metal case ones. The new ones have a similar type of sound but just seem much cleaner. Id imagine the same compatibility would apply though. I certainly found them to be good match and I've always felt JPW to have a build and sound well beyond their price. I ran JPW P1s with NVA amps back in 1988/89. They both have a clean, simple and direct kind of sound. I didn't try it at the time, but I later found that rewiring the inside of JPWs with better cable really lifted their performance. I used Supra 4 but I'm sure they would respond well to other choices too.

I'm posting a couple more pics today because yesterday's looked awful with the amps just plonked down and switched on. I spared you the pics of the wiring, but that too is tidy now. I've been careful not to bunch, coil or pack the speaker cables closely, but they are now neat and tidy.

I also wanted to post again because I've had all yesterday and since 8am this morning to listen to the NVAs with the Spicas. What I'm hearing is remarkable. I'm not exactly at the top of the upgrade ladder with these NVA amps, but they are beating everything else on sound. Heck, I'm only using their cheapie speaker cable, but it sounds......well it sounds like the amps, like nothing at all. That's the thing. I've heard so many bits of kit others have described as "not getting in the way of the music" but the scale to which these just disappear is leaving me lost for words.
I've heard (and owned) many overtly "detailed" systems over the years but now I realise they weren't actually detailed at all. They all gave a false impression of detail, whilst having a stronger electronic signature than other bits. You're usually aware of using an electronic device to reproduce music. As mad as it sounds I'd swear these ran off something else, or actually weren't running off anything or weren't there at all, because a huge part of what I'd come to accept as an unavoidable part of listening to reproduced music has been removed.
I've got two valve amps here, a Puresound and an Apollon. I'm puzzled because I've compared the Puresound and my former Audio Innovations amps to the Krell KSA50 and KSA 80 and their sense of ease and space can't be matched by the big solid state amps. Conversely, they can't match the Krell scale. Well these tiny amps seem to outdo the valve amps at what they do best and sound far more like real music than the Krell ever managed.
I'm no stranger to NVA amps. I've owned the odd one (always 2nd hand) over the years going back to the 80s. They were always good amps but I've chopped and changed lots. Its actually unusual if I haven't owned something lol. These recent ones are the first acrylic cased amps I've used and this is the first time I've used NVA speaker cable. The results have really surprised me. It's early days, but you know pretty quickly when you've made a real advance and this time I have. I never expected it to come from removing rather than adding something to the sound but that's what I'm hearing. The smallest, least expensive amps, linked up by the cheapest cable I've ran in ages turn out to be the best. Who would've thought that possible? Not me but there you go. Just telling it like it is.

If im honest, I've got far too much stuff and far too small a house. You can only listen to a certain amount and the rest just gets in the way. My mates end up storing some of it for me lol. I've spent a lot of time and money swapping boxes over the years just for the sake of it, often buying back bits I've had before. To give you an idea, I went through 40 pairs of Linn Kans in my time, trying to find a pair that sounded as good as the first pair I sold and missed. Recently I decided to just keep a few bits around to save all the hassles of buying and selling, as well as the risks of shipping. The thing is, this latest setup is going to make it difficult to use the other bits without making a significant downgrade to the sound.

Of course there's always the upstairs system, but that's my wife's. I'm still not forgiven for getting rid of her Naims last year and sticking a Krell in the middle of the bedroom. Better not go there again!

Thanks, mate. I've still got the valve amps sat on the other side of the room. I miss seeing them lit up but I'd be a mug to miss out on the great sound from the NVAs. Bloody hard to turn off and walk away from. Got loads to do and been sat here since 8am listening. I'm lazy enough without this encouragement! And NVA fit the on/off switches at the back, just in case you can steal yourself to knock them off. Oh well, looks like I'm just gonna give in to temptation and sit here all day. The amps and speakers don't seem to care what I put on, so I might as well enjoy the ride :)

Andrew, judging by your wide box swapping experience the NVA kit looks like a good bet. I'm not entirely surprised it beats the Puresound and after all Guy now does some much more upmarket amps (at a price). These may be the answer to avoid the hassle and expense of really good valve amps. I would be interested to know what speakers these work well with beside your current Spicas, as Richard Dunn does not appear to like Tannoy or Harbeth/BBC type designs favoured by many on AOS. Has the p50 got a standard Alps volume or the stepped attenuator?

Paul.

Good write-up, Andrew. Glad you're happy with your latest acquisition. It sounds to me like you've achieved a fundamental musical upgrade, not just a hi-fi one, so I suspect that your state of happiness is liable to last for a while. Nice one - enjoy!

Thanks Marco. I feel I have achieved something fundamental this time. All the better that I bought new this time, which is something I hardly ever do.

Hi Audioman. I can give you an idea of the speakers the P50/A30 have worked well with. They have been very happy with Royd Edens and Rega Elas. Many people like Royds with NVA and the Elas are related, so I'm not surprised. They are also a lovely match with Audio Note Ks. Those Dynaco A25s I bought also sing with the NVAs. I have some Impulse Horns that I've yet to try, but I will report back in a bit on that one. My only experience of NVA with BBC style speakers were Rogers LS7s many years ago. The amps did a decent job but I find that type of speaker a bit boring for my tastes. Never tried NVA with "proper" Tannoys though. I bet someone on here must have tried them.

edit: Apologies, Paul. I missed answering one question. My P50 just has the standard pot, not the stepped attenuator, although NVA use a different pot to the Alps everyone else uses. It's personal choice, and I may change my mind if and when I hear one, but I've never been able to tolerate stepped attenuator controls on any other amp. They are always too quiet or too loud. The extra gains in sound quality might just sway me though. I know logically that there must be gains to be had over and above what I have now. Now that I have the best sound I've ever managed to create, I intend to tread carefully and make no major changes in case the baby goes out with the bath water.

My previous best system was all the way back in 1992. Funnily enough there was an NVA amp at its heart too. I sold it all and bought a full Naim system which just sounded sick in comparison. I've had good Naim systems since as well as many others, but I've tried so hard to equal that 1992 system and never even come close until now. We all make mistakes but I intend to learn from my last one and stick this time.

Hi Andrew

Real blast from the past seeing the Shan speakers. I first got involved in the audio trade as a Saturday boy back when those came out. I knew the designer quite well back then and Shan also made isolation platforms. Only negative, drop a stand or speaker and they explode as the polymer concrete they are made of disintegrates when it hits a hard object.

Your collection is very interesting as it embodies much of the golden age of audio both high end and more modest.

Thanks, Neil. I remember desperately wanting Shimnas back in the day but not having the funds. It's those early hifi wish lists that drive my collecting today. I've had most things I set out to own, but still have one or two unscratched itches (Voyd Reference and 2nd Audios, as well as Klipsch La Scala). Honestly though, I think it will be quite some time before I buy anything more to go in my main system. Those little Spicas with the NVAs are better than I thought was possible. As long as nobody lists a Voyd, I should be safe for ages!

Hi Neil. That's dead interesting. Maybe I'd be disappointed with 2nd Audios. I had a 300 and 500 at the same time and loved both. The 500 I had upgraded with and wound silver/copper transformers. It was lovely and I was daft to sell it. The Shan Shimnas just didn't seem that special after waiting all that time. They had a big sound but I think I had better speakers when I eventually got them. Yes you're right. There was quite a debate about the Dynacos amongst aficionados. Some (apparently wrongly) thought the ones with top vent and Scanspeak tweeters were the earliest, but it turns out that Scanspeak didn't exist until almost two years after the Dynacos were launched. The top vented ones with Scanspeak tweeters are in fact A25x which appear little known. Mine are actually labelled as A25x. They date sometime from 1971 onwards. The confusion occurred, as far as I can glean, because the earliest Dynacos also had the top vent albeit with Seas tweeter. IIRC there was also a variant with a Philips tweeter. I didn't know what to expect but I think they sound very good. Far more capable than I'd expected. I rate them as superior to my AN-Ks and I really like the Ks.

I've read about the A35 and A50. The latter look interesting. There is some really fascinating stuff on the Dynacos and Scandynas on various forums. I learned a lot from them. Since I got the Spicas I'm really smitten, but before they came, I had intended to seek out one, two or even three further pairs of A25 or A25x to stack. They called it Dynamax and its meant to be quite something.

There's more info in the link below and some great pics online too. The speakers are cettainly good enough to suggest something special might arise from stacking. I'd imagine they wouldn't have a high WAF though :)

The Spicas look nice - I've heard good things about them but never encountered a pair.

Andrew B
08-07-2013, 10:14
That's right, that's mine. The S.E.X versions have external crossovers. My memory is a bit vague on all the details, but I do know the original TC50 was upgraded to TC50i with extra bracing, new diffraction panel and new tweeter/ crossover. The revisions were necessitated by ceased production of the original tweeter, so John Bau also incorporated some tweaks users had been doing, such as internal bracing, while he was at it. The TC50i are easily spotted because they have only a tiny square cut out for the tweeter. The older TC50 have a larger oblong one. The bit that my memory is sketchy about is the TC50i SE mods. I think it was a case of uprating the quality of the crossover components. What I do remember is that the S.E.X model then took the crossover outside the box, the added "X" denoting "xternal" (crossovers). The associated price hike was substantial and really meant they were competing against big floorstanders most of the time. Mind you, there were a couple of subwoofer designs available. They have far more bass and scale than I thought possible, so I won't be going there :)

The Series 1000 and the amps had all been serviced with new valves but the magic wasn't there in my opinion. However put it all together with a Voyd and Snell speakers + Audio Note cabling and you never know.

I didn't think a lot of the Shan's at the time ProAc Super Tablets were similar money and much better overall, though the Shan's had slightly more bass as I recall.

Hi Neil. I'm not sure what the right height is but they seem to love Pirates stands (Snell K type). I must've been very lucky or maybe there's even more performance to be unlocked, because I've literally never even moved the stands since removing the AN-Ks. I just plonked the Spicas on them and they sounded completely "right" from the off. Id be interested to know what you think about the choice of Pirates stands. I also have a shorter pair of the Target heavy stands and a slightly taller pair of Sound Org Z1 s filled with Atabytes and sand which are even heavier than the Pirates.

I only wish I'd heard them earlier. actually that's not true. Without all the other experiences I've had, I wouldn't be able to appreciate them as much.

You must have heard a massive amount of stuff, so I'm heartened that you remember them fondly. Memories of good kit tend to stay with you though, as does the type of sound they made. It's the little details about the products that tend to fade over time. I wish I'd kept all the mags I bought from 1986 onwards, but then I guess there would be no room for me or the hifi in my matchbox of a house :)

Shock, horror... Another example of quality vintage designs outperforming what's made today! ;)

It's the way that speakers were voiced in those days (by ear more than specs) that makes all the difference. How old are the Spicas, Andrew? :)

Marco.

Andrew B
09-07-2013, 07:35
Information on Spicas is a bit scarce and not always reliable. Enthusiast sites say they only started making the TC 50 in 1983 but I've come across a guy who bought his in 1982. Mine are the later ones, after they changed the tweeter. From the Serial number I would place these around 1989.

You're dead right IMO about the voicing of speakers in days gone by. Today it's not only test equipment that gets in the way of good sound, It's the whole process: From WAF friendly design, marketing department intrusion, profit-driven cost constraints, design by committee and a general move towards flimsy build. The very best products I've owned over the years seem to come from one bloke pursuing his own vision and believing passionately in his design. Such people are worth their weight in gold, or even Rhodium for that matter :) We could maybe do with a Hifi "hall of fame" somewhere, to recognise the people who have stood head and shoulders above the rest over the years. Not sure how it would work, though.

Well, it's been a few days since another pair of A40 monos arrived at my door. From switch on, they were an obvious step forward in performance from the A30. I'm now using four of these little blighters with my Spicas and the results would seem to fully support arguments for mono bi-amping. I've had nothing else that's come even remotely close in 30 years of trying.

Differences? Well again, it just sounds less and less like reproduced music and closer to a live experience. There is no sense of electronics being involved and I've never had that with anything else. I've spent every single day listening to music since the A40s arrived. My wife, who heard the NVAs for the first time this week, described them as "beautiful".

I've got my camera back with me now, so I will post some decent pics later on in the week. I'm getting a new rack, so I will get everything tidy first :)

It just amazes me how much stuff really hasn't "done it" for me. I think I've mellowed a lot in recent years, but so much I hear just sounds average. There's something very different about this setup though. I'm really not sure how much is the NVA amps, the mono bi-amping, the NVA cables or the Spicas. One day I might try a bit of substitution, but after 30 plus years of going round in circles, I just want to enjoy the advances I've made :)

Dude, if it does it for you then that is all that matters. It is a special feeling when one is listening to a piece of music and there is that tingle up and down the spine and a surge of adrenaline as things come to a climax, or am I thinking of something else

Andrew. It would be worth swapping out the Spicas temporarily to isolate the contribution made by the amps and cables. Heard them once and I don't remember them being the last word in speakers though I was impressed (but expensive over here). Also those Spicas I believe have specially selected woofers (Audax) that are out of production and no way can be replaced. So some day they may have to go (I'm sure the same situation with the Audax Aerogel units in my Missions). If the NVA 40s are so good I am wondering how good 70s and 80s are especially now Richard is using proper heat sinks -which dispels any previous doubts of overheating with these which may or may not have contributed to the one off problem an AOS member had. Anyway they now appear to be more widely compatible with all speakers according to the designer. I'm sure a rare feature of the Spica sound is the time alignment produced by the sloping baffles and the crossover design. NVA have recently reintroduced the very odd (by normal design parameters) cube speaker and these may do some of the things the Spica does with the upward firing woofer. Another speaker that employs an upward firing mid/woofer that I liked was the Castle Howard which appears to be still in production by IAG in China.

Hi Paul.
I'm sure you're right and I will swap the amps out in a while. Mine are the S.E.X. Model with an apparently massively upgraded external crossover. The ordinary Spicas were expensive enough over here, but IIRC these were more than twice the price. As the drivers remain unchanged in all TC50is, I will be picking up at least one donor pair when they pop up. I'm also interested in revisiting the Angelus. I had a pair a year ago but sold them prematurely because I went abroad and had nowhere to store something so big. I regret it big style, although I'm not sure they would beat my TC50s. Nice to know for sure though.

I've also wondered about the bigger NVA amps and I'm sure I will try a pair in time. Right now, I'm enjoying these so much that I'd like to just "stick" for now. They are leagues ahead of my Krell/Audio research combo, the Puresound and the Apollon Apache, so I figure there can't be much left to squeeze out of my music. If I do move up, I will probably get a pair of MK1 amps though and score for another bargain. I agree with you about the wider appeal of the MK2s, but when it comes to Richard's amps I use them as specified and I'm 101 percent confident in the design and the designer, so MK1s make more sense. I also like the look of the MK1s better, although the mk2s are growing on me.
I think I may climb the cable ladder too, although I currently need 7m lengths, so I might wait until I turn my garage onto a listening room. It's been on the cards for about a year, but I'm enjoying my free time far too much right now to get my hands dirty.
I must be finally acquiring a shred of patience in my old age. Now that is remarkable!

I don't know what it is about Audio Research but their kit always looks amazing... and generally sound it too!

Cheers, Paul. Ilove the look of ARC and also McIntosh and Krell. When I get my KSA 80 back from my mate, I think I might try to find a swap for an ARC power amp or even a McIntosh.

The rack was a real gamble, because there is only one stock pic of it everywhere, and it doesn't do it justice. Also, the dimensions listed everywhere are wrong. It's supposed the same size at the back at the front, which was clearly wrong even on the evidence of one pic! My space is limited and I had to guess the size and make a decision. Luckily I have about half an inch to spare. Phew!

These racks have a list price of £360 but a guy on EBay sells them for £149. That's a lot of rack for the money IMHO. Here's a link to the seller, who also sells upright versions of the same rack. I should state that I've no connection to the seller and I don't stand to gain in any way from his sales. I'm just a very satisfied customer :)

Hi, Paul.

Yes my wife's a real hifi nut too. She's also a flat-earther through and through. Naim and Rega are her favourites, although she always liked the Xerxes better than the LP12, hence her nicking mine! She's traditionally had the upstairs system except one time years ago when I had a Rock and Townshend Glastonburys. They wouldn't work in the lounge, so we swapped. She had a Linn/ Naim system in the Lounge and I had the Townshend stuff with Kelvin Labs monos in the main bedroom. It was a bigger house, and the Glastonburys sounded incredible upstairs, although strangely they seemed better with CD. To this day they are probably the fussiest speakers I've ever had in Terms of room, positioning, amps, source and cables. The best sound I ever got out of them was with a tiny Musical Fidelity A1 and DPA transport and DAC.

We do listen together, but don't always share the same tastes hence the two systems. I like both systems, but she thinks Naim amps are head and shoulders above everything else and is a bit wary of valves. She can pick Naim amps out in seconds in any dem too! Her best system was probably a CDI, 62/sonic bliss/250 and SBLs. I think she's headed that way again, but she loves using the MK1 Planet, so that may stay this time.

Wow Andrew, where did you find her? My wife doesn't get the Hifi thing much, well, I guess she did allow me to keep it as pride of joy in the lounge which is a lot more than many a wife would do... I remember the conversation with her when we first got together and I made it very clear I would not consider downsizing or moving the Hifi out of the lounge unless I had a dedicated room. My plan is that the next house we have I will ensure it has a seperate room or location where I can put the hifi and make it into a proper Hifi Man Cave :)

The funny thing though is that she can clearly hear the differences between my system(s) and run of the mill Argos specials.. The other day we were listening to a Sting album and she kept saying and I quote 'I've never heard that woosh before'... I was a happy bunny for the rest of the day

The CDI is quite a special CD player if I do say myself... I have not heard anything that comes close for less than £3000 which kind of rules out me EVER upgrading LOL.

My Dad has a CDS3 and that is a good machine too but doesn't (to my ears) have the same Analogue sparkle to it as the CDI and CDS1 do.

Personally, I have never liked Naim speakers, I find them thin sounding, very week and over priced but their amplifiers are great, full of PRAT :)

I think it's great listening together. We lived in York when we first married and its a great city for Hifi, large,y thanks to the Sound Org, which we lived yards from. I think that was a factor. Their window back then (and Vickers Hifi just twenty yards away) were like a magnet to us both.

I think you're spit on about partners hearing differences too. Whenever my wife comments on opening being better, it's always actually better rather than just different. A separate listening room would be great and it's me thing I've planned for a while too. Mind you, we old probably run three systems then :)

I agree that it is quite nice when wifey hears the difference... it gives me a nice feeling inside :)

It reminds me of a senario a few years ago when a friend of mine was convinced that Hifi was for the dye hard and didn't believe there was any difference between a good Hifi and a tin pot system from Argos etc. So, I invited him round to my Flat (this was before I met my wife so I could play whatever I wanted and at whichever level I pleased) and suggested he chose an album he listened to regularly. Happily he chose Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon on CD and I played it to him... for the next 20 minutes, he kept saying things like ... how can this be, I have never heard that before, how can an album sound so different... it was quite a pleasent evening for me. He has since emagrated to America and Emailed me shortly after he arrived to ask what Hifi I would recommend he buy as he was definately going to buy one... So I've converted him :)... My next challenge is my cousin's wife... hmm, not sure how easy that'll be

Tht must have felt great and you've clearly made a convert there. I envy him going to the USA too. Most of my favourite makers are American and the stuff that fetches big bucks here goes or peanuts there. ARC, Krell, McIntosh, Apogee, Spica, Snell, Allison, Bedini.......it's like a big box of hifi chocolates. And that's before I get started on muscle cars!

Yep, my wife and I went to New York a couple of years ago and it was a great holiday but we also loved coming home again LOL... to get away from the Americans.

My wife's cousin lives out in California and they've been arraigning for us to visit at some point .., Might pickup some Hifi whilst out there :) LOL

Hopefully my last arrivals and pics for a while. I've just sold a pair of floorstanders, but my mate has returned my ARC, Krell and Apogees. I also bought his rather lovely Perreaux preamp.

Ive been through quite a few bits in the past and don't really have any pics more than a year old to act as a record. I thought I'd get everything together for a team photo session today, although i left my wife's system out of things because its wired up in the bedroom.

Cheers, guys. I've taken a lot of stick off my mate over the 200/203. He's had a couple of them and I never liked them. Now I try them at home in this system and they sound great. I even demoed the 203 against the DPA PDM1 series 2 back in the day. The DPA was miles better and I bought one. I've got them both now and although different, one doesn't beat the other. I'm not sure if its because this is a 203 DAC 7 and therefore different, or if my ears have changed.

To be honest, my little Micromega Leader is as good as anything. Only a Naim CDI has really beaten it.

The Naim CDI is a damn good machine Andrew. I'd almost forgotten, having transitioned to the SB Touch / Beresford Caiman and Applelossless files as my primary source these days. The other day a friend of mine came over and we listened to the CDI all night and it was such a great experience. It's such a laid back, sweet sounding player :)

Hi Paul.
I can see me ending up with another CDI at some stage, unless a CDS comes up at a good price. I've had four CDIs and the next Naim CD that comes my way will be the last. Even I won't make the same mistake five times!

I still get surprises in hifi even after all these years. If I was a gambler, I'd be on the winning streak of my life right now, because all the surprises seem to be good ones.

I've had a few bits lying round that I've not been able to make work for me and the Krell KSA80 was top of that pile. I had some ludicrously good sounds from a KSA 50 about three years ago, but the thing was so big it just sat there in the middle of the floor and I stupidly sold it to make room. Of course within weeks, I wanted it back. I even chased it but it had been sold on and the trail went cold.

By chance, a mate had a KSA80 he wanted to sell and he let me have it cheap. First impressions were poor, but then I had a different preamp. So I bought another, and another to no avail. Different speakers still made no difference either. Then I bought an Audio Research preamp which was better, but the sound was still nothing like my old 50.

The Krell was loaned to a mate, along with the ARC in order to make room. I then snapped up a pair of Apogees that I hoped would eventually get something worthwhile out of the Krell. I was away at the time, so my mate got them on loan to go with the other bits.

Anyway, he loved the combo and then substituted the ARC for a Perreaux hed bought and reported great things. His place was fit to burst with big itemsm so I got the bits back about a week ago. Typically lazy, I stuck the Apogees on the end of a valve amp. Oh dear, not good. They just seemed a bit diffuse and the sound didnt seem to escape the speakers. The next day I put the ARC/Krell with them and suddenly it was very, very good. Finally, the Perreaux was put into the mix and the three together are glorious! It's so much better than the ARC.

I now have the two best systems I've ever put together, both sat in one tiny room. Hardly any room left for me but I don't seem to care :) After a very long drought, it seems like the monsoon season is here.

If I had to choose, I'd have to take the NVA/Spicas because they are room friendly and I love the holographs they create together. I probably listen for longer sessions with them too, which is always a good indicator. I can also still take the system further with cables and maybe bigger amps for the bass drivers. But, oh my! The other bits are lovely, and unexpectedly so. Definitely a system to put on when the neighbours are out. This is the first truly full-scale system I've had that works with all music and I aim to enjoy it. Both systems are staying put.

To anyone who has a bit or two lying around that they suspect may have more to offer than they've managed to squeeze out so far, I'd say "keep the faith". It will still be worth the same next year as it is now and having other bits gives you options. It's also fun to play with!

You let 4x CDI's go??? :doh::scratch::doh::scratch:

I'd agree about the CDS but they still go for in excess of £1000 and that's a little out of my current price bracket! :(

I was lucky with my CDI because I bought from a Naim dealer based in Newcastle and it arrived via delivery with a faulty mechanism so they replaced it FoC... (Lucky alo because about a month later Naim ran out of spares!!

Yes, I'm still in mourning :)

All four were belters too. First one I planned to emigrate and sold. 2 and 3 I let mates have knowing I could get another. Four was stupid really. I wanted to be able to use a front loader to make the room look nicer. That one had a CDM9 pro mech and sounded better than the others.

I know a dealer who sells them cheaply when he has them so it's only a matter of time. Unless a CDS appears :)

I've read up a bit on these and both the original and CDM9 pro versions are salvageable. I don't have the links but thre are forum threads out there on the subject. You need to cannibalise a similar laser, but nothing too technical. Might be worth researching and finding a donor mech.

Also, I found a great thread that seems to suggest that most "failures" aren't worn out lasers at all. It has some details of how to fix many issues. Worth a go at least:

At the price they sell for, it's an utter bargain - I remember being incredibly disappointed to find (as a seller) how much they had depreciated in value on the market.

True but then come to think of it. The retailed upto (prior to being replaced) at around £2200 and you can pick them up for £4-600 dependant on condition... So not a bad return.considering we're talking about a 20+ year old machine!

My rough rule of thumb is to expect to pay 50% of retail or thereabouts for high quality used gear unless there are unusual circumstances affecting the value. Even at it's first released price of £1,600, that £4-600 is a bargain.

Now to something I've been eagerly anticipating. I got my Analogue Works Turntable today and its a beauty. Incredibly well made and packed ready for nuclear war! The bearing is a hugely impressive item, as is the platter. it has the same motor as Notts analogue TTs too. The platter spins forever with one push, which is a very good sign of quality. I gave up waiting for it to slow.

I actually made a boob when trying it for the first time which indicates how well made the bearing is. I gave the platter a push, as instructed, switched the PSU on and started playing. It ran slow and I thought there was a problem. I checked only to find I'd not connected the power lead fully and what I was hearing was the platter running under its own inertia without any power. It ran so stably there was no sign of slowing!

I was kindly sent two mats (the cork one and the nitrile rubber. I strongly prefer the rubber although I do like my Origin Live mat best on the deck. The rubber one is better than anything else I've tried though. I was also kindly sent some Isonoes and Alto Extremos to try and I will do so once Ive got used to the TT in standard form.

How does it sound? It's a beautiful sounding deck. Its without doubt right up there with the very best. I've got very limited experience of Notts Analogue and Fletcher decks, but so far I'd not disagree with the makers belief that it has the same house sound, only at a much lower cost. It just sounds really beguiling and clear. It's a sound I can't imagine anyone dislikling, but I thin k I need to listen more to get a better handle on its character. Even on limited exposure I can already say it's up there with the best stuff I've owned, irrespective of price. I'll report more after some serious listening, but I am delighted with the deck and the service and that wont change. here are some early pics.

If you're ever up. North, you'd be welcome to have a listen. You never know quite what to expect from such a purchase, but seeing the bearing and platter in particular, it's far more impressively engineered than I'd expected. I've played around with most of the well known British decks but this is something far better built IMO. I've had to use the OL arm from the Xerxes today, but I've got a couple more arms on the way, including a Helius Orion, but I'd need to cut an armboard for that. It's a bit of an oddball in that it's SME cutout but it is different angle of alignment and also different spindle to pivot because the Helius is a 10 inch arm.

I really don't like the look of the deck half as much with the Alto Extremo feet, but they are turning out to be quite special so I can see me keeping them. Isonoes are good too, but not a patch on the Altos so far. I really didn't expect this deck to be half as good as it is turning out. Personally, I'd say the Origin Live mat is made for the deck and I'd never be without it. Thing is, it completely smashes all other mats on the Xerxes and the Rock too, so I need to buy at least one more.

Not using the Rock's trough, Andrew?

I'm waiting for another couple of arms. I thought it best not to tamper with the Origin Live arm and Denon cart. I've got them set up just right :)

On balance, I do prefer using the trough for the Rock solid bass it delivers, but I do appreciate the more open sound the Rock has without. That particular Rock is a very nice one. A real minter and not too far behind the Xerxes. Miles away from the Analogue Works though. Still plays great music though :)

Hi

if you wanna part with the A400X sometime give me a shout..

Andrew B

Will do, Dan.

You could probably find a few people wanting to swap their A400x for your 400 and pay you a few quid into the bargain. The standard 400 always fetches more. I'd had a few A400s over the years and got an A400x from a mate about 3 years ago. It sounded really great but there was always this nagging doubt in my mind because the reviewers had said the original was better.

Anyway, I couldn't get the thought out of my head so I paid top dollar (and trekked miles) for an A400 to compare, only to find that (for me at least) the A400x was infinitely better. One thing I really like about it is the way it works well with modest speakers but really excels with very good ones. It was brilliant with Spica Angelus and I still rue the day I got rid of that pairing.

I also have to say I love the look of the amp too. It's a classic as far as I'm concerned :)

Hi Andrew,
Really like the look of your Analogue Works Turntable very beautiful simple lines, it just looks right. I said in my own gallery pics that I've never heard a turntable in a hi fi set up but the more I read in this forum the more I would love to give it a try without spending silly money. I see the Analogue works team recommend a couple of arms to go with it and have it set up for you. That means I would only need to fit a cartridge and get a phono stage I think?

All the best

Marty :D

Hi Marty.

I think the guys from Analogue Works recommend a Origin Live Arms. The cheapest is £295 which is a very good price for what it is. I use an OL arm too and it works very well on the deck.

The more I use this turntable, the more surprised I am at how good it sounds. I've had most of the top turntables, some many times over the last thirty years. This is without doubt the best I've had. It's a long story, but I've only had a turntable in my second system for the last three years (a Roksan Xerxes). I wanted to have a turntable in each system and so I bough the Analogue Works as a second deck, or so I thought. The Xerxes had been my turntable of choice for years and it's seen off LP12s, Rocks, various Pinks, Alphasons etc etc. the Analogue Works is markedly superior to the Roksan, so it's now in my main system.

I even tried the Analogue Works with a cheapie RB300 arm against the Roksan with my far more expensive (and far better) Origin Live Silver arm. The Analogue Works deck was still better by a good margin.

Even trying to play devils advocate I just can't see any downsides. It's stupidly cheap. Fabulously built, it sounds like it costs five times the price, it's all British made and the makers are true gents to deal with. I hardly ever buy new because I've usually regretted it soon after. Conversely this time, I'm absolutely over the moon with this and I look forward to thousands of happy hours enjoying it.

I'm not sure if you could make it to hear the deck at Divine Audio, but I'd say it's well worth the trip. If you're closer to me than them, you'd be most welcome to hear mine :)

Hi Andy, its still all good as far as the Analogue Works turntable is concerned

I've now got the Analogue Works Turntable in my main system. It is sat on a Torlyte platform and its sounding even better, if that's possible. I've never had vinyl sound this good, or even close. I just love using it too, so I'm listening more than ever. I decided to keep the Alto Extremo feet for the deck, which Divine Audio kindly sent on approval along with some Isonoes. It was no contest. The Altos were light years ahead.

For a band new turntable model to arrive so well finished and work perfectly straight out of the box is extraordinary. It's so polished, you'd think it had been in production for years. It just goes to show what can be done by talented, passionate enthusiasts who are out to make a great deck rather than a big profit. These first ones are being sold at cost price (£599) to get them out there. That means these guys are making only £200 on each deck at the full price of £799. Considering that they ship free, provide backup and also an extended guarantee (3 or 5 years: I forget which), its not a lot.

I've been using my Dynaco A 25x speakers in my main system yesterday and today and I've loved every minute. I've been using NVA LS6 too, which has really lifted the sound of the Dynacos. They sound like different speakers. They were already a bit special but they really are magical with the LS6. They don't sound like vintage speakers in any way. They would steamroller most modern speakers I've heard and the LS6 just let's me hear far more of what they can do. I got mine second hand and it was an absolute bargain.

I've even been using a Pioneer A400 with the Analogue Works deck and the Dynacos. Still sounds fabulous, although I do use a separate phono stage (Michell Iso). The LS6 seems to work just as well with the Pioneer amp. I'm very familiar with the A400x and I've never heard it sounding this good. Not even close. I live in a semi, but if I had no neighbours through the wall, I'd be listening from waking up to falling asleep :)

Anyway Andrew,

on to more important things, I love the look of your new record deck.
It may seem strange to judge audio equipment by its look, but I do tend to believe that if it looks right, it is right. I may even be tempted to have a listen to one (as much as I have grown accustomed to my old "fruit box").

All the best. Guy.

Andrew B

Cheers, Guy. Divine Audio aren't too far away from you in Northants. I'm sure you'd enjoy having a listen. Tim is the guy I've dealt with most and he's been a complete gent. I'd love to hear what others think of it. The comparison with the Linn would be one I'd love to make. I was surprised it beat my Roksan so easily and also a bit disappointed because I've loved that deck for years.

One thing you will be impressed with is the look and feel of the deck in the flesh. It's more substantial than it looks in the pics. The platter alone is almost 5 kilos. I'd like to visit the shop, not least because they have a phono stage in the works. Sadly, I'm so far away, it's pretty unlikely I'll make it anytime soon. Still, after my wonderful experience with the deck, I'd be very happy to take a punt on the phono stage when it's ready. If it even comes close to the quality and VFM of the deck, it will be a must have for me :)

I've been trying to thin the numbers recently, but still manage to find other bits that I like. My best find in ages is this quantum electronics pre/power combo. Internally it's as nice an amp as I've ever seen and it sounds beautiful. The aim of the maker was apparently to outperform a Naim 42/160. I've got a 42/140 to hand and the. Quantum does everything the Naim does with the same musical signature, whilst being more spacious and better at the top end. One of my best amp finds ever.

I should've taken some pics with the lid off. You can see the Naim influence but I think they are even prettier. I don't think the exterior was the product of a "design department". It reminds me of the Myst amps albeit without the lovely midnight blue wrap.

I have struggled to find very much info on them so if anyone knows more, I'd be very glad of the info. Here's what I've heard:

Apparently designed by a guy called Tim Nind after he left Crimson Ekectrik, these were always seen as Naim-like in their music making.

I read somewhere else that they were designed by an ex-Naim employee. Not sure if this is also correct. Tim Nind would appear to have moved on to Harman Audio, if it's the same guy.

I found a couple of firms that still service these amps, although mine is perfect and even the caps look intact, so I'm hoping I won't need any work for a good while. They certainly sound very healthy indeed.

I have the specs, although as a non- techie, they mean nothing to me. I'm just delighted to have discovered another treasure that was lost in the mists of time.

I've been having great fun with a pro version of the Bryston 4BST lately. Far better amp than I'd expected and really easy to love. I'm using it with Apogee Centaurs and it's a great match.

I got it in perfect working order but the fascia Was tatty. I treated it to a full service with a company I use up in the North East. I had the fascia professionally powder coated, added suitable handles and got the lettering done professionally. I'm really pleased with it. Here are some pics:

That's quite a beast Andrew, it looks brand new. How much did it cost to have the front panel powder coated and the graphics applied as I would consider having the same done to the facia on my DR5 as it has collected a few nicks and scuffs over the years?

Andrew B

The powder coating was a bargain. I rang the company and I was quoted £20, which is their minimum charge. I was chuffed with that.

I took it in, only to find the guy I spoke to was off, so I was taken to see the boss. He said he'd do it for a fiver! I owned up to the quote of twenty and he said not to worry: Just pay the fiver. I gave him a tenner because I felt I'd be robbing him. Two hours later he sent me a text saying it was done. If you'd seen the original, you'd not believe how great a job they did. It's made of stainless steel, but someone had stripped it back. It was marked and pitted, so I've no idea how they managed to get that finish.

A mate called in a favour with the lettering, so it cost me nothing. He has a contact that does graphics for custom bike shops. Took him ages to get round to it mind, but I'm chuffed with the result.

I don't know who did the lettering, but the powder coaters who did such a great job with the finish are called Elite Powder Coatings. They are based right on the banks of the Tyne and they do a mix of professional/industrial work and bits and bobs for ordinary punters like me. From the stuff they had there, I think they can do pretty much any colour or finish to the highest of standards. Nice people too, and proper grafters!

Cheers, James. I'm looking at a mains regen at the moment. I can't really justify the cost of a 1500 but I'm wondering if the little 500 would run some of my smaller kit. I'm thinking of say, transport, DAC, Turntable and a pair of NVA A40s. It's only £199 right now and I'm thinking it would be a really useful addition when I take my kit abroad with me.

I'm guessing things like Bryston and Krell would need something bigger than an AG500, but I don't think I can really take them abroad with me. I'm tempted with the Bryston though as it's not that big and I can easily lift it unlike the Krell.

Cheers, also Jerry.

You'll also see the "Arrow" speaker cable you put me (and half of Wigwam) onto in the pics. Still a great cable and a mad crazy price. My wife loves the look too ;)
