The Speakers
Started life as a standmount kit from Wilmsow audio, The Home Studio Monitor.
The drivers are the Volt BM 220.8 and the Scanspeak D2905/95000 both excellent quality drivers.
I re-housed them in some floor standing Cabinets same drivers same Xovers

Lovely system and racking, all the more satisfying as it's self built, man of talent. :cool:

A wee question for you, i have a pair of PHL SP 3000 drivers for a good while now and was thinking of marrying it with a pair of RAAL 70-10D ribbon tweeters to make a pair of very high quality stand mounts,did Wilmslow tailor made the crossovers for your build?, do they have measuring equipment to make cabinets bespoke to your build?,
i don't want to throw these babies of mine into any box and hope for the best, your post and another who is building Wilmslow kit cabs with Tannoy drivers has rekindle my desire to house these into something nice. :)

Yes Wilmslow do make custom cabs and Xovers for you if you can supply the Theil small parameters for the drivers, they are helpful and the cabinets are excellent.
If you cant get the parameter's they could measure them for you

Yes Reel 2 Reel can be excellent with the right machine and good tape its analogue and very natural, it does have a bit of a bass lift but that’s always welcome :)
My Tascam BR 20 sounds excellent with Maxell UDXL tape. Tape is expensive now and I have thrown out a few reels with sticky shed (beware of old Ampex / Quantegy).
The Teac 3440 is very good and would suit a musician as you can tape on all 4 tracks individually, overdub and simul sync. I have only used it for 2 track play back.
I also have a Revox PR99 mk1 in sick bay and I will have to make time to repairing one day?, it will be interesting to compare it to the Tascam?
I also have an AKAI ?25 in a box in the loft somewhere which sounded very good and the glass heads dont wear out.
The Tascam cassette deck is also faulty as the speed is fast so its in bits in my work shop and it need the motor speed controller recapping as that is supposed to fix this fault, again its finding the time.
Last year I spotted a mint Nak BX150E in a second hand shop for £39 so I use that for now and its good but just not in the same league as Reel to Reel

The plinth was a rushed first attempt and only made with £20 sheet of ply wood, I always intended to get some Birch ply and do a better job but this looked OK in the end and sounded good so I just left it alone.:)
I do like the 401 in a plinth where the plinth is flush with the top of the 401 and I like the look of Walnut so maybe I will make another attempt when time permits.

HTPC,
Modushop HTPC case, soon to be replaced by a Quiet PC case.
Motherboard = ASUS AT5ion-T deluxe
4 gig Ram
128GIg Solid state drive
Blue ray player just for loading disks (overkill really)
Put a big fan in it at first but not necessary as the MOBO runs cool enough without it so Its silent anyway with or without.
Power supplu is a laptop brick, this could be improved with a linear power supply which is a future project.
Samsung LED monitor. HTPC + Monitor came to approx £500
I also use a Samsung 10.1 Tablet as a remote using the Gizmo app
Operating system is Windows 7 and music player is JRiver Media 18.
Music is all stored in FLAC on a NAS drive in my study and hard wired with Cat6 cable.
Audio output using Wasapi event style with Async USB out to the Young Dac.
Excellent sound quality as good as my other sources and CD player is now redundant

The HTPC is just so convenient to use and easy access to most of my music as the digital system gets better is seriously challenging the analogue sources but I happy to listen to either.
Nothing can match the Visual stimulation you get from watching a record or those 10" reels going round:)

I was thinking about my Phono stage and MC step up and how I could get them both in one box so I opened up the Lentek step up and the MC circuit board and components are all in a potted cube so I removed it from the box and wired it into my little PP phono box, the MC is powered by a PP9 battery which are crap so I bought a little 9.9V lipo battery :)

Well although I was happy with the end result I had a Hum :eek:, I tried every combination of earthing arrangements and the mains lead is shielded but nothing changed it as the problem is just the proximity of the transformer, If I turn the module on its side or put some metal shielding in between it reduce quite a bit but was not silent :scratch:

So spurred on by Ken Quinn’s wonderful DIY Battery powered Phono stage ;) I was at a car booty and spotted a couple of yausa 12v batteries for £3 each so I snapped them up and was please when I got them home that my 5 stage battery charger indicated they were fine:)
So I ripped out the power supply from the box and wired in the batterys

Sound Quality
As soon as the needle hit the record of Joe Cockers Sheffield steel album I new this was special the phono stage was now silent and the sound stage and dynamics had opened right up.
So I am well chuffed and will get a couple of smaller gell batteries to fit in the case at a later stage.
I measured the current output from each battery at 6ma so these 4.7AH should last about 6 months :eyebrows:

Michell Gyro Deck with Orbe platter and HR power supply is the latest edition to my HIFI
The arm is an Audiomods Rega Am Kit which I think is excellent and the cart is a AT 33EV
All in all its still not as good as my Garrard 401 but with the recent addition of the Audiomods
arm its getting closer, I’m going to try the Otofon KP-b on it shortly and see if that also improves it again
I like the look of the deck and want to like it more than my Garrard but I’m not kidding myself

Thanks Martin the system is sounding very good at the moment and I am very satisfied with it but one of the problems of being into DIY is you never stop thinking about what if?. So I still have a list of neverending mods that I want to impliment hoping it will improve the system again
My main project at present is building one of the paradise phono MC stages from the DIYaudio site and I am expecting that to be a nice step up from my present phono stage.
Thats a beuitifull looking Chord amplifier in your Signature and sound like you have an excellent system there;)

Yeah I think Simon has built 4 sets so far and he has made a fantastic job of them, top quality ;)

Just bought a piece of 20mm Perspex from E-bay
It arrived with rough cut edges so I sanded them down then put a 5mm bevel on the top edge with my plane followed by fine sand paper on all edges.

Yes good idea, looks like yours is getting the royal treatment from Simon who has probably built more of these than anyone else id imagine.
Mine is pretty standard but I am still expecting it to be a big step up from what I have now and I think my Kontrapunkt B still has more to offer with the right loadings.
BTW didn't you have a Cadenza? Black what did you think of that ?.

Well although I was happy with the end result I had a Hum :eek:, I tried every combination of earthing arrangements and the mains lead is shielded but nothing changed it as the problem is just the proximity of the transformer, If I turn the module on its side or put some metal shielding in between it reduce quite a bit but was not silent :scratch:

So spurred on by Ken Quinn’s wonderful DIY Battery powered Phono stage ;) I was at a car booty and spotted a couple of yausa 12v batteries for £3 each so I snapped them up and was please when I got them home that my 5 stage battery charger indicated they were fine:)
So I ripped out the power supply from the box and wired in the batterys

Sound Quality
As soon as the needle hit the record of Joe Cockers Sheffield steel album I new this was special the phono stage was now silent and the sound stage and dynamics had opened right up.
So I am well chuffed and will get a couple of smaller gell batteries to fit in the case at a later stage.
I measured the current output from each battery at 6ma so these 4.7AH should last about 6 months :eyebrows:

The Batteries where a bargain for £3.

It would be a good idea to fit a fuse on both of those batteries, all it needs is a pair of inline fuse holders and a few crimp terminals.

It will be a big step up, have you read the review I posted? It makes for interesting reading. This new 4box version has a few more tweeks compared to Simons version. I do indeed have a Cadenza black, it's excellent the best cart I have ever owned and was used in the review I did of the paradise phonostage.

update on the paradise phono stage, it is up and running now and playing some sweet music :)
It still a work in progress on some parts to get it working at its best, but as it is its still better than any other phono stage I have so I am happy but I will keep tweeking as one does with DIY :D
fist mod will be the transformers are producing to much input voltage which is just producing too much heat at the shunt regs so I will get a couple of 18v transformers and also couple the internal heat sinks to the outer case heat sink with some 6mm aluminium plate.

Both are in good condition but needing attention the A77 needs a new capstan motor which I have but haven't had time to fit it yet and the PR99 plays well but is in need of calibration to sound its best.

Update on my paradise Phono
I have just replaced the power supply transformers due to an annoying buzz from mine and excessive heat at the shunt regs from the supply voltage being unnecessarily high.
I replaced them with a couple of 18-0-18v encapsulated torroidal from ebay these are dead silent and now the heat sinks are only hand warm

I also did the DDCR earthing under my Garrard and at the Paradise input and had to lift the ground connection in my pre amp and the result is I now also have complete silence with the pre amp flat out, so good result but I think with this grounding scheme comes a slight loss in transparency and air? may need to do some more work on that and experiment a bit.

Another result recently was the continuing process of teaching myself how to calibrate a Reel 2 Reel Player
The Revox PR99 Mk2 has now had a new cal/decal switch fitted and I calibrated the input, reproduce and record levels and Biased it for the Maxell UD XL1 tape and its now sounding very nice indeed.

Thing is though I do use the Tascam a lot cos I love the sound of it and parts for them are like rocking horse sh*t so I had to have them and I would gladdly sell all the other's and just keep the Tascams
Now if a Studer A812 were to come along I would be very tempted by that :D

No its just a Farnell unit, LesW from Avondale loaned me it and it did a fine job but I have replaced with a dual channel OWON 1022 which is also great

Finally got round to picking up the 2 Tascam BR20s from my Ebay purchase
One is just a playback machine and was used to edit interviews, this was filthy but tape heads still very good
The full record playback machine is in mint condition and has virtually no wear on the tape heads that I can see so it has had very little use from new :), they have both been in storage for approx. 5 years, only bumber is the missing knobs on one machine

I cleaned them up and calibrated them and they both play very nice music indeed, very please particularly with the unit in the photo below

I bought it form a chap who just buys and sells HIFI gear he got this one from a young lad whos farther had died and left his HIFI, they also discovered a brand new one and pioneer amplifier still in sealed boxes, he told me he sold the NOS turntable for 2K on ebay

I have just ordered 3 pieces of Alloy plate for spare arm boards, the board supplied was a 222mm rega mount fit.

Thanks Marko & Jerry its a lovely turntable and it sounds good as well. There is also loads of room for tweekery as well so it can only get better

So probably it was bought new back in the day and has been sat in the same system ever since. There is a HFW article from way back where NK renovates a couple of these decks, don't know if anyone recalls it?

Latest project is building a pair of Voyager Mono Block Amplifiers using the excellent Avondale NCC200 amplifier modules.
Everything is built up from mother boards and I am trying to use the best components within reason.
I have fancied a set of monoblocks for a while as my previous experience with them is that they seem to give a more effortless delivery and better channel separation and a bigger 3D image which is something I personally like
I have started the amps and have completed all of the circuit boards but there is still some case work left to do and getting the wiring neat and tidy so its going to take a while yet as work commitments has taken over for now so I have had to put them to one side

Present progress is below so you can see they are taking shape anyway

Linn LP12 and Rega Planner 3 also sold this week, sorry to see them go but they are just gathering dust in boxes in the loft so someone may as well get some pleasure out of them
It was actually nice to have a play with them before they went the LP12 was very musical and I spent all afternoon revisiting old classic Prog and it sounded great

The rega P3 also put in an incredible performance for its price bracket (sold for £100) even in stock form but really opened up when I fitted the Audiomods arm denon DL160, it put in a seriously good performance playing Stamila by Hugh maskella which is hard to track during those thunderous drum outbreaks

Latest Toy and Atari MX55N very happy with this machine \I have always wanted one and its a lovely machine a sound's fab as received must be pretty well set up but I am going to recheck all calibration settings before recording anything

I was wondering about the Atari thing too. I read it last night and pondered then thought that Atari were a big company they must have had a pro-audio division at some point in the dim and distant.

But it was just a typo...

Hi all been a while so just thought I would post a couple of pics of the present system not that much has changed :D
I am working on a new hifi rack which is remarkably similar to the podium rack on the left I have only done 2 tiers but it has worked out well so far
The next change for me will be an 821 pre amp that I am working on as it has a little more gain than my B4 which helps with my Phono playback again that's not finished yet but making nice music in its present part finished state.
Ill post a build thread f both these projects when I finish them :eyebrows:
I still have the R2R fettish :eyebrows:

Yes I have a total of 10 now and WAF is low so I have to hide them from her LOL
PS your welcome to borrow one with some tapes if you want matey, its a slipper slope though haha

Just thought I would update my old system thread to add a couple of changes
The most recent one is the Resurrection of an old Tascam 122 mk2 Cassette deck and thats sounding quite lovely and I am enjoying it very much, just needed a re cap on the capstan motor control board and a new set of idler tyres, I bought a calibration tape from ANT and that has helped my be able to check through the calibration

The latest and my favorite addition to my R2R collection is the studer A810 which I have spent quite a bit of time on last year recapping all the electrolytics, little blue Phillips, little red roderstines and the dreaded Rifas all power supply caps and motor run caps as well as substituting all Op amps for LM4562. new bearings in the reel table motors
I am very pleased with it and I am now confident its not going to fail due to a dodgy old cap.
