Hi all,

As I started a CD purchase thread, thought I'd start a Movie related one.

Can an Admin add it as a Sticky please :) :D.

So I went to Tesco last week and bought:

American Pie: Reunion
Les Misérables

Paul.

I was going to buy 'The Hobbit' in Sainsbury's last week but they were asking £14.99 for the DVD (god knows how much the Blu-Ray is, didn't bother to look). Just ridiculous price and I won't pay it - plus give it 3 months it will be £7.99 then £4.99 and so on. Last thing I did buy was the old BBC series 'Private Shulz' - well worth £6.99 of anyone's money.

I mainly buy Blu Rays these days but my last BR purchases were:

The Impossible, Lord of the Rings extended Edition box set, Push, Conan, Green Zone, The Adjustment Bureau.

BRs are so cheap these days its not worth buying DVDs

Bought the Hobbit...Need to stop buying DVD's as I have a shed load lying unwatched and sealed...Some bought a long time ago. Just finished putting loads away last week to make room for CD's.

Probably this;

I hardly ever buy movies of any kind as I have a Lovefilm account and get what I want to watch through the post and send them back when I'm done.

Taken and Taken 2 are great Blue Rays
Latest blue ray was Les Miserables - a favourite of my wifes who I wind up by referring to "I dreamed a dream" as "the Susan Boyle" song. (My Sue sang it first in a TV talent show - Bob Monkhouses opportunity knocks in the 1980's)
Story as moving as ever, but is it just me, or could Valjean not sing in tune?

Having now watched both, unstoppable is good, a little predictable but a great film non the less. I saw Bourne Legacy a while back and it was better that I'd expected, not as good as the original three, but I guess I was never expecting it to be.

Some good watchin' there, Roy. I love the bit when he runs through his list of ideas for new programmes: 'Inner-city Sumo. We draw a white circle on the ground and fat people try to throw each other out of it. Cheap to make - do it in a pub car park.'

'Cooking in Prison' has actually since been done. I hope they paid royalties.

Recently watched Jeremiah Johnston(R Redford) and enjoyed it so much I slipped the bluray version into an order I placed the other day and it came on Friday. not had a chance to watch it to see if it is a significant improvement on the original dvd issue. I was slightly let down by the case which was thinner than normal. I am wondering if this is going to become a norm and that they are going to start making blurays etc with these thinner cases.
Still I will report on the quality when watched.

I'm mid way through the last series of the Sopranos after re-watching them over the course of the last 2 months. I watched them all when they were on TV but id not seen anything for a good couple of years. Its absolute quality from start to finish and a real struggle to find even an episode id personally rate as less than 4 out of 5 stars.

Hopefully its got some redeeming qualities and not as bad as others say, or I think it might be.

Just ordered these movies on Blu-Ray (4K and standard) to watch over Christmas:

Should be good on the home-cinema system, on the dark, eerie nights to come...:eyebrows:

Marco.

Now all arrived - can't wait to watch them over the Xmas hols, under candlelight in front of a roaring log fire, whilst sipping some mulled wine!:carrot::santa:

Probably this;

I hardly ever buy movies of any kind as I have a Lovefilm account and get what I want to watch through the post and send them back when I'm done.

I agree. I already have far too many music DVDs and Blu Rays and I rarely watch a movie more than once. Netflix and Amazon Prime means I no longer have to store more discs!

Marco
10-12-2018, 19:28
Are they available to watch in 4K HDR, though? When you play that through a good home-cinema system, with the right equipment, it makes a *massive* difference to the result!

I don't buy many Blu-rays/DVDs, but I like to have a selection of good ones to hand, which I can show to friends and family when we're together:)

Next I want to get these:

Hopefully its got some redeeming qualities and not as bad as others say, or I think it might be.

Its different Neil, stick with it and you’ll be rewarded.
Setting it’s scene and laying out its premise can initially seem off putting if you view it in terms of the 80’s/90’s Trek mindset...its not episodic like those shows..but the payoff is that it gets to the fundamentals of what makes Trek “Trek” in a bold new way which, imo (unfortunately), put off some ‘stuck in their ways’ fans.
A lot of the bad press came from this.

I’d ask, what’s more “Trek” in concept than growing and developing?
Just not in a JJ Abrahm’s Way...:)

History will judge it well, judged as an entire series it’s Terrific and absolutely canon.
The last 2 minutes of the final episode is, well, a TOS fans wet dream.
And Season 2 continues this.

Just like Breaking Bad, I envy anyone seeing it for the first time.

Interesting - I found 'The Fog' to be not the least bit frightening, in fact I thought it a load of rubbish, whereas I loved 'Christine': far more subtle and creepier.

I have never found any movie scary.

The first watching of the original 'Jaws' had couple of unanticipated moments, and 'Alien' had very good suspense. The creepiest film I can think of is Roman Polanski's 'Repulsion'. Carpenter's 'The Thing' was cleverly nasty too.

Geoff,

Look at George C Scott in “The Changeling”...

Scarier film than any of the Exorcist films (The third - and best one - to me ironically starring that same George C Scott) was this, up there with Bob Wise’s The Haunting.

"Bad to the bone ..."

‘Do you have time for a Story?’ (John Houseman on the beach...at night...reading to children...under candlelight)
‘Six must die”... the guilt ridden Priest coming to terms with own demise (later in the film)

Barry...watch it again, if we still disagree that’s ok, happy you watched one of my favourites again!

Has anyone seen any of the Italian spaghetti westerns called Trinity, and Trinity is my name?

I used to watch them all the time on VHS when I was a kid. The local video shop (remember those) were selling them off and I bought them. One of the guys names was Bud Spencer?

They were cool at the time... Don't know if they are on bluray or anything. Probably quite naff now. I've not seen them in decades.

The occasional one gets shown on Freeview channels, as do The Professionals and Randall and Hopkirk. Don't recall seeing The Sweeney though.

The Black Adder
15-12-2018, 10:18
Yeah, the sweeney is on at the mo in the week. But like the professionals they are probably 2nd generation copies as the picture quality is pretty dire in places.

And the sound is wobbly as a wagon with a square wheel. Whoever did the sound dubs must have used a really worn out machine. Kind of nice that though, makes it sound not digital.

I love all those programmes, but, and this is purely a personal thing, I don't see much point in buying them on Blu-ray, as you can download that stuff for free on the net, or watch it on YouTube. Plus, I tend to like action/sci-fi films and/or stuff that shows off the home-cinema system well, as that always puts a big GRIN on my chops!:D

Gradually going thru this place decorating. After ive finished tiling the bathroom its the Front bedroom next. There are hundreds of DVD's in there, never get watched. Box sets upon box sets especially that tripe CSI American cop stuff i bought the dear wife that most have never been watched. Im gonna have to talk her into getting shut. Hopefully she agrees.

Media collections look dreadful & im not wasting Cupboard space for the sake of it. CD's & DVD's are an eye sore

Marco

I agree about the eyesore, unless they're stored properly inside a nice cabinet, and so hidden from view. Difficult things to sell though, if you were planning on that, as tastes in films are so personal, even more so than music, but box sets of popular TV series, etc, in good condition are always saleable.

If it were me though, I'd just take them down to your local charity shop, unless there's anything particularly rare among the films.

'Casablanca' and 'To Have and Have Not' are essential Bogart films, along with 'The Maltese Falcon'.

(Any duplicate DVDs, or those that are not to your taste, can alway be taken to charity shops: it's where these days I buy most of mine.)

Don't worry, I've done the same. For example: in posting about 'The English' (starring Emily Blunt), I made two posts, because I sometimes may write a post, get distracted, and think I have pressed 'Post Quick Reply' and go on to look at other threads.

Becoming senile!

Today's Black Friday weekend 4K Haul

https://i.imgur.com/9vK5Vpf.jpeg

Been enjoying streaming in 4K,
but even with Dolby Vision the image and sound doesn't compete with the 4K physical disc.
Physical Media is where its at, especially with good 4K transfers.

Oppenheimer in 4K should be a bit of an event if any of the other Christopher Nolan 4K discs are anything to go by.
Another one for the collection, missed it at the Flicks, really looking forward to watching that.

Also scored a Billy Bargain on this,

https://i.imgur.com/bWxOclX.jpeg

Battlestar Galactica Complete on Bluray.
Includes the 2003 Mini Series, all Seasons and the TV movie Razor.

Love this show,
Have Seasons 1-4 on DVD, picture is quite muddy and dull, 1080p should be a big step up.
Looking forward to rewatching this terrific Series, one of my favourites.

Have these except Tenet on bluray, worth it for the uptick in quality, especially for under a tenner 2nd hand from CEX.

Watchmen Ultimate Cut will be interesting, fan of the comic, this version weaves certain elements of the comic in for the first time.
Should look fantastic in 4K.

given cost of cinema nowadays, (and often better experience at home) it makes sense to me to go big.

Yeah,
And it ain't cheap either.....

I don't recall how much it was last time so can't have been that much. I paid the extra for the fancy seat too.

I suppose that was eight years ago! I'm advised that since then they've upgraded all the seats to the fancy ones.

Just checked and cheapest price to see 'Napoleon' is £7.99 or if you want a seat in the best spot £9.99 - that's not that bad - unlike the films!

Barry
02-12-2023, 20:13
£9.99 is more or less two pints of beer bought in a pub; which will only last an hour. So £9.99 for two hours entertainment is good value for money.

Along with my annual Christmas viewing of Die Hard, (shot on film, so looks great in 4K) thats my telly sorted for the next few days.

https://i.imgur.com/ZYn3uKI.jpeg

Both looked great on Streaming,
Can't wait to see what proper 4K HDR from a disc will look like.

Last Of Us is in Dolby Vision,
Sadly Prey is 'only' 4K HDR10, but the disc has the Comanche dub, which is how I would choose to watch it again.
How cool is that?
Some of the dialogue took me out the movie when watching it streamed on Netflix... "You got this" etc seemed a bit too modern?

Recently rewatched the Japanese anime 'Akira' in 4K with original 1980's Japanese Dub, (in 24/192, the original Score is an astonishing sounding thing) and I couldn't believe how different the movie felt, meaning of dialogue and emotions of charcters etc.

Prey is gonna be a doozy to watch again.
Best Predator film since the original, though have a soft spot for the Danny Glover sequel Predator 2.
The other ones... naa, not so much

Fun Fact,
Prey directly references something in Predator 2, very cool.

That Sinking Feeling is a classic.
Only on blueray I think,
watched it for the 10th time on my trusty VHS back in the day.

That film,
Its SO Glasgow...

So many '1 shot' great actors never to be seen again.

Charming as hell (can tell its from the Gregory's Girl guy) and so well made.

Gregory 's Girl is a fine film, but a bit "twee".

'Local Hero' was a bit more for adults, but equally idiosyncratic.

Don't get me wrong - I love Gregory's Girl, and have a copy somewhere. It's a very sweet film about 'first love', with some nice touches: such as the headmaster with a sweet tooth; the sports teacher somewhat out of his depth, and the camera club measuring exposure and development time in 'elephants'. :)

In the spirit of keeping Grant's thread going...

Latest Bluray pickup was one of my favourite 80's movies, Conan The Barbarian, now in a full 4K rescan and remaster.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ZOEAAOSw0DhmACfs/s-l1600.jpg

Love this movie for so many reasons, it takes the genre and treats it seriously, like a historical piece for a time that never was.

One of the greatest movie scores ever written, not a lot of dialogue being one of Arnies earlier movies, so the music does a lot of heavy lifting.
Theres a Score only audio track, which with the (now dazzling) visuals on is the best way to listen to the complete soundtrack.

Released only for the American market by Arrow Video, the extra disc cant be read by my Oppo, but have the UK blueray with 50% of them anyway, but theres some new cool stuff for this release, so will eventually get a PC blueray drive and rip to to the computer, and reburn it to disk.

One of the best 4K transfers I've seen, film grain and the filmic "look" hasn't been tampered with, but detail and the new HDR give the movie a new lease of life.
Its amazing.

Pretty hard to get, so paid a fair whack for it from America, but its a movie I keep going back to.

I do have what was a half decent bluray player, it's filling a space on the a/v shelf and looking like it means business, but it's not even plugged in, not been used for at least 5 years. I'm too tight to buy discs for it - I only had half a dozen or so, and I gave them to Grant. Maybe one day I'll press it back into service if I ever get a set up that's good enough.
