Hi AoS,

My name is Shaun, I am 30 years old and from Colchester, Essex. I have been into HIFI for about 3 years now, and always seem to have the urge to upgrade!!

I listen mostly to rock music, but I like to try other sorts of music.

My current setup is Roksan K2 integrated amplifier, Rega Apollo cd player and Monitor Audio RX2 speakers. I have recently just started streaming music from my IBM laptop, through a Fubar DAC into the Roksan - have to say I am reasonably impressed.

Hopefully, I can chat to some of you in the future. I look forward to hearing from you, cant really have a decent HIFI discussion with the wife as she only cares about aesthetics!!!

Welcome Shaun, from just North of the border.

Just be careful - if you think you've got it bad now, just hang around here for a while and see how bad it gets! :eyebrows: There certainly won't be any money left for shoes! ;) I once started to work out how much I'd spent since joining AoS, then I went for a lie down in a darkened room, put some music on and it all didn't matter any more! :D

Hope you enjoy the forum - which component has upgraditis afflicted you with? My problem isn't upgrading as such - it's buying tat off ebay to have a play with... I'm currently trying to work out why I now have 12 pairs of speakers - it was 3 when I joined - pesky little blighters keep breeding - at least that's what I tell the wife - and anyway, they come in pairs, just like her shoes! ;)

Enjoy the forum, and maybe one day we can organise an East Anglian Massive hifi get-together? :)

Thanks for the kind reply. It always seems to be the speakers I want to upgrade.... mind you, have only had 4 pairs, so not bad!! Every time I change, I end up buying Monitor Audio again and again. I think I need to try something different.

A meet up would be good sometime.

Well, IMHO a change of speakers makes the biggest difference to the sound signature of a system. These days, it is relatively easy to get a good digital source using file based audio (as you've found) and so the old maxim of spending most of your budget on the source is turned on its head to a degree - unlike vinyl, of course.

I'll probably get shot down in flames, but to my ears, amps make relatively small differences as long as you have a "good one" - although that's subjective in itself, of course!

Monitor Audio are glorious looking speakers, and I've not heard yours myself, but it might be worth getting a listen to something a little less mainstream, or even vintage. Most of my speaker buys have been "old school" and in my experience (and as the Americans say about their car engines) "there ain't no substitute for cubes" - in other words, there's only so much a designer can do with a small bookshelf or miniature floorstander in getting the best sound. That said, you then enter the aesthetics conundrum, and fall outs with wives! Luckily mine lets me get away with a fair amount as long as I keep her in shoes! ;)

Looks like the East Angia Massive is "bigging up".

Don't believe a word of what Alex says; since joining AoS I have only bought one pair of speakers (for my second system). Mind you, I have bought 5 tuners and 6 power amps! :doh:

What sort of "other music" interests you? I'm sure that after a few months here, you will have found that you have spent a lot of money on new CDs etc. Maybe Alex was right after all? :scratch:
