I've been waiting around for a Krell KSA50 or 100 to come along and then this springs up

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Krell-KSA-200-KSA200-KSA-200-Power-Amplifier-/321123654472?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiF i_Amplifiers&hash=item4ac4761b48

I personally think £1800 is way too much. Any ideas about a fair price for this?

Thanks

Andy.

PS i may send the guy a cheeky offer if it dosent sell. :eyebrows:

I'd say £1,800 was about right, but no more. I'd expect a KSA-50 to fetch up to £1,000, a KSA-100 about £1,200, a KSA-80, up to about £1,600.
I'd take the 50 or the 80 but not the 200, thanks.

Cheers, It's the 50 I want TBH. ;)

Try a Monarchy. Same sort of sound, slightly less power, but a sight cheaper. You know how good they are. Been using mine tonight. LOVELY!

I've had a KSA50 and really enjoyed it. I've got a KSA80 now and it is very good too. Most people seem to rate the KSA80 higher than the 50 but I think I preferred my 50. It's hard to be sure though as it was used in a different room with different kit. I really don't need the power the KSA80 delivers as I use either Audio Note or Impulse speakers which go loud on a couple of watts. I tend to use my Puresound A30 more often. The Krell does things it can't hope to match, but the Krell amps take about an hour to come on song and I never can wait that long. I don't like leaving things on and I usually listen on a whim. If you do go for a Krell, they really do love Audio Research preamps. I use an LS1 but have had similar success with other AR preamps.

Forgot to add, Rexton. The KSA100 isn't a patch on the 50 or 80. It's a different design and doesn't sound anything like them. A few mates have had them. I didn't rate them and neither did they. I've never heard a 200 or 250, so can't say what they are like. Personally, I'd not pay over a grand for a 50 or 80. The KSA50s isn't meant to be as good as the original either if the reviews are to be believed.

Thanks for the comparison info but what do you mean by, " The KSA50s isn't meant to be as good as the original either if the reviews are to be believed". Which amp are you comparing it to  PS I agree with not paying over a grand.

The 50 could sound a little "cloudy" at times, but the preamps may be a lot to do with that in all honest (we did have one before I packed it in for service and it was nice in a creamy kind of way and better than I remember hearing it new outside of JMH's system).

I know the KSA80 well and it's a fabulous amp, especially at the prices asked now and obviously assuming it doesn't need hundreds of quid's worth of re-capping. The 200 should be from the same generation I think with hopefully a similar but bigger sound and it was the hugely deep 250? that I thought sounded harsh and dire in comparison.

The poriginal FPB's were delightful and unburstable amps but even now, an FPB300 is £4K or so I think, so rather more expensive.

£1800's a lot of dosh to take a gamble I admit, but it should be ok..

Hi Rexton. Sorry I didn't explain too well. The original KSA50 (and KSA50mk2) were superseded by the KSA50S. The "S" suffix wasn't clearly marked in my reply. It was essentially a completely different amp and looked internally (to me at least) to be a far cheaper affair. There was a review in Stereophile which compared it to the original IIRC.

I've actually loaned my Krell and my Audio Research to a mate until September as I will be out of the UK most of the summer. He takes incredible care of things, so im more than happy to help out. He is full of praise for the combo, but he uses Martin Logan's, so will probably benefit more from the extra grunt than I do. I'd love to compare my amp to a KSA50 when I get it back. I like the idea of twin transformers in the 50, as opposed to the bigger single one in the 80. My only experience comparing separate transformers was when I owned an Exposure IV power amp and a Dual IV. The only difference was the twin transformers in the latter, but the difference in performance was incredible.

Actually, I think the 50 was superceded by the 80. The 50S came a good bit later.

Guys, once again thanks! I think I'll hold out for the KSA50, seems to be the way to go. I must admit the dual transformer is something that I fancied. Isn't it supposed to be like a pair of monoblocks in design?

I think the following is the correct progression of the big power amps - I lost interest when the FPB series came in.

1980 KSA 100

1982 KSA-50

1983 KMA-100 Mono and KMA-200 Mono

1987 KRS-200 Reference Mono (Krell Reference Standard)

1988 KSA-80 and KSA-200 (re-configurable as KMA160 and KMA400 Monos)

1990 KSA-150 and KSA-250

1992 KAS Krell Audio Standard Mono (2 chassis)

1993 KAS Krell Audio Standard 2 Mono and S-Series Stereo amps

1996 Full Power Balanced Series (FPB)

And here is the Stereophile review of the KSA50S I mentioned. The comparison with the original model and the KSA100 are interesting.
