Me too, just bought one, then another with a 775SM:mental:

I've not been able to do direct comparison with my Tabriz Zi (only 1 Prefix), but there's not much in it.

plus, its really easy to mod for a 12" wand :D

There is nothing at a sensible price that even comes close! And, that's before you do any upgrading work, then it enters the 'Super Arm' league. Amazingly versatile arm, it works well with any cartridge, just alter the damping to suit the compliance. This looks a nice one.

I'll buy the AKG cartridge if it is still going.

PM me with information.

I think they only cost c£140 when new (1980). Too much for me at the time so I settled for a Mayware on my Thorens.

The counterweight on mine is solid and doesn't have the sorbothane insert. Is it any early one? What do the paddles look like? Could they be made? Mine doesn't have any.

Top arm. I've got one on a Systemdek. They're very easy to get on with. :)

The sorbothane insert was original and Mission made huge play of its vibration absorbing qualities. later on and with heavier cartridges coming along, a "top ring" could be added to the existing counterweight. Not sure of the sales pitch concerning the solid counterweigt, but it could well have been a response to Asak and Karma style cartridges which may well have adversely altered the resonance dynamics of the arm as it was. By this time though, the exit cables became huge and stiff, rather preventing use in the ubiquitous fruitbox which was sold by then with the Basik LVV and Ittok mainly.

I had only ever seen the arm with the sorbothane de-coupled counterweight and was surprised when mine arrived with it solid.

The lead is somewhat on the stiff side and will be getting replaced. Bearings feel really solid.

It seems a bit cheaper if you buy it on eBay ...

The paddles are basically bent wire or rod, easy to make.

I was thinking of turning out a few sets and see if there was any interest.

The solid counterweight is rare by the way and a bit sought after.

Looks like eBay listing is pitching it to the USA/Canada market as well as European and UK. I would expect them to get between 50%-75% higher price from a USA bidder. Smart move.

As for the rare 774 bits and pieces, I have right here in front of me a counterweight extension balance weight and a little screw. That goes straight on the back of the tube, so no decoupling, but it's much smaller than the counterweight proper.

I had my 774 at various times on a Walker CJ55, a Heybrook TT2 and two TT prototypes I built myself. Doug Brady sold the prototype for me, but with it went the arm. Bugger!

Was he wearing a blazer at the time?

That sounds like my Doug.

Just bought a Walker CJ55 on eBay an hour ago, mint condition. No 774 arm though, and £300 is too high for me. Around £200 mark - maybe?

Mike

It uses an obsolete Swizz Sonceboz Type 1112 motor.. They were good decks, i have a Rega 'R200'/Denon '110' on it.. However im not really bothered about these British specialised decks anymore tbh.. It's in a system in the living room but i'll probably never use it when i get the new motor sorted..Ornament if you like..

I've been watching 774s on Ebay since Christmas. The ones I've seen so far have gone for £136, £165 and £210 respectively, so there's a definite trend going on. What really peeves me is that the £136 one was originally mounted on the TT2 I bought, but I didn't notice he was selling it as well as the TT2 until it had gone. B****r.

I had a mission 774 on my PT for 20 years. Most of the time with a late technics U205C I picked up in a back street in Osaka - until the babysitter ripped the stylus out by accident. More recently with that Goldring (which is not at all bad). Whilst the SME5 or Helius Orion were the "reference" arms the mission was a hugely under-rated very high quality uncoloured gem (albeit a bit of a meccano kit to look at). I took it to AK to rewire for me recently, and (owing me a favour or two) he fitted a funk F5 instead with a twinkle in his eye. Utterly astonishing how much better it is. The most obvious element being deep bass (the mission was always a bit light and dry) but the detail, imaging and record noise suppression are astonishing. I am relying on 20 year old memory for this next statement, but I am pretty sure the F5 outperforms the SME5 and Orion as well. AK has a rare Orion on the shelf - I'll maybe try the comparison one day soon. After I've finished pimping the PT

If I didn't have three already I'd buy it Phil. Tempted all the same.

If you found the bass light, did you experiment with damping viscosity & paddles? The sound of some cartridges doesn't 'fill out' without a fair bit of damping.

When Mission started selling their 775S turntable with the 774 arm, it came with the solid counterweight - the arm by itself always came with the sorbothane CW. I got my 774 off an old 775S I bought, hence also have the solid CW - to my mind the thread is a bit loose though, I keep meaning to use plumbers tape to tighten the joint a bit. Great arms! Lots of additional info over on VinylEngine.
