I picked up a hammertone grease bearing Garrard 301 from a local garage sale but it needs a repair as nothing turns on when plugged in at the moment. I don't know much about these and wonder if any of you could recommend a repair specialist. It is in fine condition cosmetically so only the electrical/mechanical service is required I believe. Any idea how much I'm looking at in repairs?

Firstly, WOW, you lucky bugger! You have struck gold, they are selling for over a £1K now  I would send your 301 to northwest analouge, have a work with dom he's on the net just google him! Best of luck with your wonder find!!!

That was quick Andrew! Cheers! I've read some good things about Dom at Northwest Analogue and I was infact thinking of sending my Townshend excalibur tonearm for a bearing checkup and respray. I never knew they did Garrards as well. Their consultation fee seems fairly reasonable so I might ask him to have a look. Thanks Andrew and will keep you updated.

Audio grail's work looks fabulous indeed. Any idea about their service price? They seem very discrete about it.

Expensive certainly. It may need a lot more doing than you realise. I would expect to be paying a few hundred anyway. Complete bearing rebuild, complete motor rebuild likely. What condition are the linkages. springs, idler etc? Give Matt a ring to get an idea. You could PM him as he is a member here - 'A.Grail'

I'm thinking of sending my cream grease bearing 301 to Audio Grail. It needs re-painting although I did the bearing and motor myself a while ago. I just need to find a window when I can bear to part with it ...

Congrats on the grey 301 - if the paint is nice I would keep it as original as possible and just service the moving parts.

Thanks Patrick. It's definitely not MINT but I think I'll keep it as original as possible as I think it reveals its age and character better that way. Is there a particular way to pack this for transit, I mean should I pack platter, bearing assembly, idler wheel, etc. separately?

You should pack the platter separately and use the motor transit bolts to lock the motor. The speed and on/off knobs are quite brittle so make sure you pack around them or remove them completely. Other than that, they are quite robust.

Hi John, Not knocking anyone else, but Loricraft Audio own the rights to the Garrard name and as well as making the 501 and 601 models plus plinths and accessories for the other 01 top end models, do a complete remanufacturing service for 301 and 401s. Terry O'Sullivan is amazing at these and being in Berkshire probably not to far from you. They still have some of the original factory set up equipment from the Swindon factory and are the only source of new official Garrard parts. Look them up at garrard501.com (http://www.garrard501.com) Terry is a great source of advice on these decks.

Best of luck, I'm jealous
