Something TERRIBLE is going to happen to MartinT unless I tell him his Gale 401 speaker schematic is wrong!

The 6.8uF capacitor must go AFTER the 0.3mH coil in the midrange filter or he'll blow his amp up. :(

Well, the Gale 401 was known as an amp killer dipping to 3 ohms in the midrange, but this will be disastrous.

I'm Steve in Portsmouth, UK, BTW. Interested in crossovers and speaker modelling. Like refurbing and improving old speakers too. Greetings everyone. I really joined to get to your secret archives, but these are desperate times for MartinT. :D

Here's my current system too. Rotel and Monitor Audio since you like to know this stuff. I like any music really.

Warms the cockles of me heart, Steve, that you'd join up just to save Martin blowing up several grands worth of amp! ;)

I'm a complete electronics numptie, so I'll take your word for it, and you're welcome to the secret archive after your Samaritan gesture!

So, hope you'll stick around to help out other poor souls - tell us a little bit about your own system and music tastes if you like, in between charging in on your big white horse! :)

Welcome to AoS, and hope you enjoy the forum.

Thanks, Alex. Now my mission is accomplished, I should say I got back into this hobby when I bought a pair of broken Monitor Audio MA R300-MD speakers.

The tweeters were solid with dried up ferrofluid goo. Since then I've been playing with crossovers to improve things, like below:

A work in progress, as it goes. :)

More recently, I've got interested in time-aligned speakers which look like this:

And working out a crossover that will get the best out of this type of speaker:

My next project. They promise stunningly good phase alignment. Good hobby this. I'm remembering my physics and engineering training.

Thanks again, Steve! I'm kicking myself for not noticing but I just drew out the diagram with my changes from the Gale refurb website. Just goes to show you can't trust anything on the web without double-checking it!

I'm checking my facts and will re-draw the circuit later.

Oh, and welcome to AoS!
