Hi Allen,
yes I think it is carbon - same matt fitted to the VPI Traveller.

we got them on demo in Loud and Clear in glasgow
(i work there saturday mornings setting up the decks)
great bearings and very high quality control on the many finishes available
great little decks and the big ones are even better
the mat is a rubbery substance may well have carbon impregnated im not sure... and is easy to clean

I hope yours is good.
I was put off VPI turntables after buying an HW19, which I didn't like at all. It was cheaply made and awkward to set up, the main bearing wore out quickly (£100 new part) and the belts kept falling off, even new ones and the three screw belt cover was a pain. Not to mention the crude Sorbothane block 'suspension' that kept moving about. The only good quality bit on it was the clear lid!

Well, that's pissed rather neatly on Jim's cornflakes, Geoff.

I purchased a VPI Scout 1.1 a few weeks ago, also with a 2M Black cartridge.
The mat I believe is sorbothane. It's tacky like sorbothane, and any LP left sitting on the mat overnight will have a residue on the side that contacts the mat.
I have a leather mat on the way that I'll test with the Scout. It certainly should get rid of the tackyness, and I'm hoping that it will also help reduce static build-up while spinning vinyl (a persistent problem here in dry Utah). But I'm not yet certain whether it will work with the VPI clamp.
I hope yours is good.

I've found the same. Never mind overnight, I found ANY contact with a sorbothane mat fouled the surface of my records and the contamination is virtually impossible to remove.

Don't be disheartened by my observations, yours is a popular model and I've no doubt better than the HW19 I had.

The new mat used on the Traveller and Scout is made of Neoprene. I have not had any stickiness or issues with this mat with my records.

I can't explain the different results that we've had. I've had my mat stick lightly to the vinyl even when the clamp wasn't used, and have seen the residue that the mat left on an LP that I left sitting on the mat overnight. Perhaps those occurrences are less common in humid areas.

I have not left a record on the matt overnight but it has sat on the turntable for 2 weeks and there is no residue on the platter. I would recommend contact VPI if you have concerns, their sales service is excellent and I am sure they will be able to let you know if there were any issues. I think they have sold something like 10,000 Traveller turntables with that mat on so if there were any problems they would be hearing them.
