Where next for my Techie?

Hi there

I bought my minty SL1210 last year. With lots of advice from people on here I did a first round of mods, these were

1) Iso feet

2) AT 440 cart, sumiko headshell

3) Lid removed

4) Funk firm mat

5) Vantage 'basic/entry level' external PSU

6) Vantage bearing upgrade

The next step would have probably been to change the bearing or platter. The high price of these items put me off somewhat and I got busy at work so didn't have much time to invest in this hobby.

Back then I also bought a second hand minty Jelco 750 which I never got around to fitting.I was waiting for the Shuggie collar to be produced again and also needed to find somebody who could fit it for me.

The deck sounds really good, with a good recording I really enjoy the music:)

I listen almost exclusively to 90s 'underground' dance music which is very bass heavy. When I first heard this music as a young man in clubs it was played as vinyl on 1210s and so hearing it again in the same format sounds and feels so right:)

Anyway, I'm ready to spend some more money on my deck now and need some direction.

1) The Jelco arm is begging to be fitted but I'm being slightly put off by the loss of VTA on the fly. How much of a problem is this?

2) What else should I do? Should I be thinking about a platter upgrade? The Funk Firm one for example is circa £600, it would really need to deliver to justify the cost.

As you obviously like the 'on-the-fly' adjustment of the Technics arm then you could have it re-wired and have upgraded phono connectors to improve performance.

There are a few companies who do this just do a google search.

If you are fitting the Jelco arm I think you need one of these

I have a similiar tt and i listen to 'underground' dance music.My advive would be,get the shuggie collar and fit the jelco! Vta shouldn't be too much of an issue.I never felt the need to adjust it once set up! Just when trying different carts and even then it's not that difficult imo.

I've not heard the Vantage bearing,but i did have the MNB for a bit and this is what i would recommend.The arm and bearing together will make a significant jump up in quality imo ;)

It may not be easy to get the bearing quickly,but Mike is offering a discount for the first 20 people that lay down a deposit!

I had recently just sold my MNB,but i will DEFINITELY be buying one again ;)

Actually perhaps VTA on the fly isn't such a big deal so I'm going to fit the Jelco. As suggested I'll get the shuggie collar (which I presume is what MCRU is selling?)

I have been thinking long and hard about the MNB but I'm an impulse buy kind of guy. When I'm in the mood and have some hobby time I want something right now. I really wish he would just keep some in stock and always sell them at the discounted price. However I'm aware of his explanation about why he can't do this.

I have a Jelco and not impressed with the ergonomics of it. The adjustment is not so bad just long winded

A P10 will transform the sound of the system. A mains regenerator that all the kit can be plugged into. Big difference to my Technics, also my Isis CD player

You are joking aren't you Mike? I can't find a UK stockist of the P10 on the internet but a US site has it listed at $5000.

If i was in your position and didn't want to wait for a bearing,i'd get the Jelco fitted,get a decent tonearm cable (the yannis gets glowing comments on this forum it seems!) and spend the rest on records or maybe a rcm,if you haven't got one already :)

Your Pre could well see my Naim 82 off and and and..
The P10 gives a staggering amount of subterranean bass you have to hear to believe
Oh I didn't mention the weight, and the bulk.
It needs to people to lift it into position

No,the Yannis is a tonearm cable! I wrote this before i'd seen that you are going for the AO cable :)

Point taken however I'm not in a position at the moment to spend that kind of money. It is something I need to look into though as my amps, preamps etc are all running off the standard mains cables and I have a rats nest of cables behind my AV cabinet.:)

No cost and cheap mods are available with mains adjustments and a tidy up.
After we moved a few years ago I ran my system off 2 x 4 way mains adaptors from 2 switched sockets.
Sounded rubbish. I was not a happy bunny
Massive improvement going to a bank of unswitched sockets
Massive improvement again when the sparky put the earth rod in the ground properly.
All this stuff improves the whole system of course not just the deck
I also use Mana racks and I know they make a huge difference
Recently I moved my kit around to segregate the front end from the mains and power boxes - very nice improvement there.
Had a rats nest of cables at the back which has got better, but not A/B tested. It seems to be a 'bad thing' to muddle cables.
Hifi power cables for the Technics and others will certainly help the sound.
I upgraded a semi modded Technics to quite a high level and it now sounds great - but big improvements from the P10 and some Ultimate mains cables
Hang around here and there will be all sorts you can do to make the sound better
Oh, yes and Yaninis cables - superb

My guess is that Yannis is the one to go for - but I've never heard an AO cable.......
I fell in with Marco and others testing against Kimber and Oyaide
