I'm off on my holls soon and need a new suitecase so can anyone recomend a hard shell suitcase that's sturdy and won't break after one trip?

The only stipulations are that it has to use clasps (no zips) have at least 2 wheels and be a manly colour...:)

I have been looking at this one - http://www.looksluggage.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2010&ref=4&gclid=CP7xx9za-rYCFerHtAodqjoAZA

Which seems pretty good for the money?

Got 2 of them in mid blue up in the loft, had 'em for years and years and they've been all over Europe and the Far East without a problem - not been used for years as, getting older we went for something lighter and with 4 wheels - fancy buying second hand? Cosmetically they look as you would expect but still totally intact.
Dave.

For the least moisture egress all seams should be double stitched and contents double bagged.

Sounds like it's the one to go for.

To be honest Dave for £53.99 with free P&P I might as well buy a new one. Thanks anyway.:)

For some reason stuff 'egressing' from cases made me think of Fred West going on holiday :spew:

That's the one I use (in a "manly grey"). It's been all around the world with me and taken loads of abuse but is still in top condition with nothing broken. Had it years now. Highly recommended.

Samsonite.

There is this one but it's over twice the price of the Carlton - http://www.luggagesuperstore.co.uk/samsonite-aeris-upright-71cm-trolley-case-black/p1002...

I bought a few Samsonite hard ABS cases over 20 years ago like one below, which have had the shit beaten out of them by various airlines and have seen a lot of use over the years, but are still going strong without fault. The gadget show did one of their test to destruction on various ABS cases and the only survivor was the Samsonite.

I'm not sure they still make this style though, which is a shame as I like its look. They are expensive, but have more than paid for themselves in my case. I did um and ahh before buying them, but so glad I did now. Buy cheap, buy twice ;)

Wow they have gone up since I got mine (although thinking on that was almost ten years ago...). Worth it though if you are going to do a lot of flying, they will take licking and keep on ticking plus the little wheels actually work i.e go round like they should which is more than can be said for some of the cheaper options. If you ever have to change planes at somewhere like O'Hare where they seem to have once been part of a competition to see who can have the longest row of gates in the world then it is a positive boon. Especially when you race past some poor sod whose wheel has locked up and is being forced to drag his luggage along sled-fashion like some latter-day Scott of the Antarctic.

Yep that one is really good - got a mate who flys about 10 times a year he has had one of those at least 15 years and it is still perfect.

I used to be in a relationship with a BA flight attendant and flew a lot (now its only about twice a year), anyway, pretty much all her crew friends and her used Samsonite luggage, so there's a clue there I guess.

Thanks Tim. I did a search and found out it's part of the Samsonite® Oyster 200 Series. Alas no longer made. fleabay might have one in the future but parts will be hard to come by if needed.

That's the one, Oyster series - shame they don't make it now as they are the dogs danglies :(

I guess a lot depends on use too, if you are going away for a weekend in the car the Carlton will be fine, but with repeated air travel I would want something a bit tougher personally - but Samsonite ain't cheap unfortunately . . . good luck with the choice

Yep, pricy but excellent, completely closed shell, no zips, bombproof.
Think this was originally a American Tourister model (part of the Samsonite Group?), and may be still available as new/old stock under that name at a discount.
3 capacities from memory, totally reliable and unpilferable, as I found out via Schiphol. The only case to come through intact with contents via Schiphol (KLM - Keep Luggage Missing).... Two cases destroyed before that, still have this one in perfect nick.

(KLM - Keep Luggage Missing)....
Slightly off topic (sorry Dave), but I went to Ecuador with 2 friends via Schiphol flying KLM and 2 of our bags didn't arrive having never left Amsterdam, which was tricky as it was a dive trip leaving the next day. Two colleague's from work went to Germany in February for a training course and went with KLM and one of them didn't get their luggage on arrival. So out of two experiences I am aware of with KLM they have had a 100% success rate of luggage not turning up!

In fairness (sort of) on both occasions the bags were reunited with their owners the next day, but still pretty poor service.

It looks like the Samsonite is defiantly worth the extra then. I think I'll go for the 75cm (middle sized) one. Cheapest I found was £129.35 down from £199.00 with 30% off.

Thanks for all the help...:)
