It's a fantastic Amazon deal (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Album-Classics-Etta-James/dp/B0062EKXX2/ref=pd_ybh_16) Paul - I pointed it out to Tim the other day. Price has gone up a quid or so since then though. Still an out & out bargain.

That's interesting up from £12.28 already? I have noticed their pricing is often like airline tickets and varies constantly. As you say though, still an absolute bargain - thanks again Chris, not played the whole set yet, but its a superb collection and would still be a bargain at 3 times the price its at now.

Have both albums and they are very good :)

They are indeed. Bought them after watching the Roy Orbison story followed by a Jeff Lynne documentary on tv a week or so ago.

I forgot to add that I also got the new Vampire Weekend album, Modern Vampires of the City.

Machine Head SACD (Warner Japan).

Not sure this betters most vinyl editions.

I would say it's one of the better SACDs in my collection - tight and dynamic, with lots of room ambience that places you right at the hotel venue where it was recorded.

So far I've only had a chance to listen to Almanac briefly during lunch as I was at Peterborough this morning and London this afternoon so I dropped in home.
Initial impressions are that it is very good, maybe a little more folky or gentle than Dear River if that is possible but when I listen to Emily I am constantly reminded of All About Eve which makes it it comfortable and almost familiar.

I'll report back after I've had another listen and after I've had my dinner (which is just cooking) I'll play the other album.

I bought both albums without prior listening based on the superb Dear River and I don't think that I will be disappointed :)

You're a lucky man Andy to be able to discover someone with such a back catalogue to explore, enjoy it all.:)

It's a funny thing but we only know what we know, and often take it for granted. Hearing great talent for the first time, (Van Morrison, Elvis, Richard Thompson, John Martyn, Joni Mitchell, Willie Nelson etc etc) is something that I'm jealous of a bit, but only because of the enjoyment ahead.......getting any recommendation of great artists with extensive back catalogues that I can add to this type of list is always something that I welcome. So any recommendations?

Did I notice that you like Brendan Perry Martin? You should check out The Mirror Pool by Lisa Gerrard that I've just bought, I think you might like it - the song 'Sanvean' is worth the price of the album alone. Makes me think of Henryk Górecki and Samuel Barber who I really like ;)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517Lo9LA8NL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

I guess I should add I was very disappointed in this. Ruth was part of Beth Nielsen Chapman's band and whisked from Boots in Belfast for a music project with Beth in Nashville. Her talent on stage solo with just a piano was very impressive, this 'pop' influenced recording is less so.

Jumble sale today, 5th in the queue so got to the electrical goods first.... Nothing of interest, still managed to be first to the CDs (no vinyl damn it). A quick look revealed about 300 CDs and other collectors bearing down. Price was 20p or 6 for a quid so I said to the woman behind the table, "Can I give you fifteen pounds for the lot"? OK says the lady. I took the all to the tea area to look through them properly and had other punters still trying to get hold of the discs. After telling them to F%#€ off! I found amongst others in the first of the three boxes.

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers Album
The Beatles - White Album, Abbey Road, and Rubber Soul
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell, Wish you were here
John Lee Hooker Boom Boom
Lou Reed - Best of and Transformer

About 9 or 10 new and sealed Classical discs

Oh yeah and a copy of Spice Word

Have not had a chance to look properly at the rest but it's looking good :)

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

I have to confess that I have never owned a copy of this album, not even a cassette taped off a friend, although I have heard it countless times played in the background back in the '80s and '90s whilst chilling at friends' houses I have never had a proper listen to it on a proper system. I'm in the process of catching up on music I should have checked out years ago so I bought this album along with a couple of other things.

My God what have I been missing all these years? This has to be one of the greatest records ever. the music, the playing, the production, everything just seems to come together in a huge bundle of musical awesomeness. I've only had it a week I must have sat and listened to it six or seven times already. It is just simply devastatingly good. Plenty of you out there will be saying 'yeah yeah yeah, where have you been for 30 years?' and that's fair enough. Anyway I've just ordered a copy of 'Closer' on the strength of it. Only problem now is that the Amazon 'recommended for you' thing is trying to tempt me with 'The Smiths'. That just ain't going to happen ;)

Continuing my catch up on stuff I have meant to check out for years. Not sure about this one, it is highly rated but not really my sort of thing. A bit like Big Star meets Bowie. Maybe it will grow on me. The drums are well recorded though.
