i would just like to congratulate Peak hifi in Sheffield England for ordering a demo model pu7 arm in 12 inch long version

anyone wishing a demo of the arm will be happy to know shaun at peak will be able to let you hear the equipment and maybe even get u a nice coffee at same time :D

J7 are 12" arms really that much better than 9 or 10"? Why aren't there more of them about?

I'd like to make a uni-pivot or WTA type, but still not sure about length I should make it. Looking at some 12" arms, they look a tad ungainly. Hope to use a section of carbon-fibre fishing rod.

a lot depends on the turntable and cartridge as to where a 12 inch arm is the way to go...the longer the arm the less the tracking error

some decks just cant take the longer arms

and most mm carts are looking for mid effective mass so a longer and heaver arm tube may not be ideal

its really the low compliance MC carts that benefit from the increased effective mass and that works well with a 12 inch arm

I moved from the usual 9inch arms a few years ago, up to 12inch. I would never return to the shorter length. Of course, you need a deck large enough to accommodate the extra length, and most won't. But if you can, the longer arms just sound so much better (to my ears anyway). They tend to be smoother, sweeter sounding with a greater sense of natural ease. If there's a negative it is a tendency for dynamics to be less 'whipcrack', but overall I couldn't go back from a 12inch arm. It's a surprisingly large improvement, more than I expected.
