Well, had a Dac comparison today and a very good day it was too.
Didn't get the chance unfortunately to hear the Weiss (or the Dacmagic) but we compared the Mytek to the Young.

Using both units strictly as a Dac only, source was my home brew Music Server/Jriver playing a mixture of 16/44, 24/192 32/384 and DSD tracks into my valve amp and Rega RS3 speakers.
Cabling was TQ Black speaker and Interconnect, home brew Lapp/MK mains leads.
The Young didn't do DSD so no comparison there, but let the Young bring its party piece with some 32/384 files I had. Different thing, but letting it show what it can do.

Honestly...quick version?
We felt the Young was a more enjoyable, musical listen.

Don't get me wrong, the Mytek was bloody good and it ticked all the Hifi boxes...it had a very clear, precise presentation - particularly with DSD.
But we felt it played more to the head than the heart though - to me its more of a precise digital swiss army knife than something that steps aside and let's the music flow.

A great description of what we were hearing came from my mate:
After playing the Young for a while he said he had been thinking about how to describe the sound of what he was hearing and he laughed that he couldn't...
"It just got out of the way, I was listening to music not the equipment".

With the Mytek he said he instantly went in to "Hifi mode" and thought about the bass, decay, treble energy etc, not the music being played.

We swapped between the two playing the same test tracks and the difference in the two Dacs became more obvious. The Young just got out of the way, the enjoyment was all about the song, its meaning...how dirty that old Les Paul sounded on Gregg Allman's "Country Blues" album, how on Livingston Taylor's "Ink" album you could almost "see" him adjusting his hands on the harmonica whilst playing it....that kind of thing.

The Mytek didn't draw us in the same way, it sounded like very (very) good Hifi, very detailed, precise...the bass was excellent, but missing the "organic" quality that made you feel like you were listening to real people playing in front of you.

For us the Young did all the various Hifi stuff just as well (we felt actually that the resolution down low was better, we were hearing micro detail that was missing with the Mytek), but worked to present all the hifi "stuff" in a way that combined to make what you were hearing sound REAL.

I could talk dynamics, stereo image and depth, room acoustic, resolution and transparency, but you know what there's no point really.
In comparison the Young just "did music" in a way the Mytek didn't.

Maybe if I tried the different filters on the Mytek it might have changed the flavour of it? My experience of filters is that they do change the sound, but very subtly...at least on my previous Rega Dac.
I tried to make sure it was as level a playing field as possible and took the filters out of the equation as the Young didn't have any.
Jriver playback software was set up for maximum sound quality for both Dacs.
Interesting that both Dacs had quite different Jriver "sweet spots" with buffer settings etc, maybe down to the Sabre Dac chip being different to the Burr Brown on the Young?

Didn't try the different filters, but I did explore the options in the Mytek USB driver.
I didn't find one that to our ears was just as - Right - sounding as the Young.
The Young had a level of refinement at the top end which was sublime, all the detail you could need and more but presented in an exciting yet organic style.

It's important to say that the Young was powered by a linear PSU, a Teddyclone made by Simon SQ...and this was no doubt a factor.
My experience is that a better PSU can make all the difference.

Important to state that we used the units strictly as a Dac in the comparison. The Mytek offers a lot more connectivity and features built in, where the Young just does its thing as a dac.
Of course the Mytek's killer feature is its Native DSD playback.
It did it very well and we played a mix of normal and DSD128 files. It sounded very very good and you could tell DSD playback was "better" and well worth having if you had an SACD library ripped to your server.
The same DSD tracks were played on the Young, albeit down sampled to 384 PCM format and you know what, the musicality of the Young more than made up for any perceived "on paper" reduction in quality.
We didn't feel anything was missing with the Young, even playing DSD.
Playing the same files at 32/384 resolution via the Young as just as enjoyable and in most cases better.

To sum up, both extraordinarily good Dacs, but very different in their intended use I feel.
The Mytek has a feature set that is way beyond what the Young offers and will be of fantastic value in the kind of system where its abilities will shine.

For straight musical playback and enjoyment we felt the Young nailed it.
The Dac just got out if the way, it didn't have a signature Hifi sound of its own, it just played music.
In my system to my ears (my mates ears too and it was more black and white to him) this was the case, with a linear PSU the Mytek maybe take on more of the organic quality I personally prefer, but for me in my system it's the Young every time.

Good times... :)

The description you gave of the Young's performance is similar to how I'd describe the performance of my own M2Tech Evo DAC, so I'm not surprised to hear that you like it.
I'd like to hear what the Young brings to the table.

The Mytek already has a linear PSU :eyebrows:

Yeah it would be interesting to hear the mytek with an upgraded PSU; as you've said it can transform a dacs sound.

***edit*** didn't see the comment above, fair enough.

Got a link to the one you've got Chris Ta . I'm afraid the Young DAC is a bit out of my budget . Both these DACs were very good but the Young won out in the end as the Mytek sounded a bit clinical to my ears . I found it difficult to describe the sound of the Young because it sounded so natural and just got out of the way of the music. We were wondering if a linear PSU would have made a difference to the Mytek so thanks for putting us straight on that Chris.
Had a great day at Garys again ( great pizza mate :) ) . Just a shame the guy with the Weiss DAC and the Cambridge Dacmagic couldn't make it . Hope we can put this right next week as I would have loved to hear both these DACs too.
Nice write up by the way Gary , and very similar to my impressions on the day .

Mine was supplied by Keith Cooper at Purité Audio - might be worth dropping him a line.

Thanks Chris , if it offers even 75% of the performance of the Young DAC it'll be very good indeed . I may just contact Keith. Ta.

Gaz the mytek needs a very long burn-in about 500hours then it really starts signing
as Mytek come from a studio/mastering background , like HDtracks they are designed for daily use
Mine took ages to run-in but did sound excellent , all my customers reported the same after a good run in
good interconnects & mains cables improve the sound again

Just as a matter of interest, which components in a dac would need to burn in for 500 hours?
Keith.

Guess most kit benefits form burn in and my Young was a second hand buy.
That said, I know the Mytek's had a lot of use, possible though its got more improvement in it.

The two dacs were hooked up with very good speaker and interconnect cable, was aware of trying to keep things as evenly matched as possible.
Burn in is always a factor though I guess.

Coming from a mastering background I'd suspect the character of the Mytek wouldn't significantly change, could be wrong though.

Scott,
am i right in saying you have one of the Power Inspired Regen units?

HI Gaz

Great write up, thanks. I have a Young & SQ PSU, and very happy I have been with it. The one DAC I have been genuinely curious about as a successor (almost enough to consider buying blind) is the Mytek. So thanks for the super relevant comparison!

I have to say I am slightly surprised, as the Mytek has pro-pedigree and is a more recent design. Having said that, I have never found the Young lacking in any way, neither has one friend who replaced a Weiss DAC2 with one. I heard SOTA Resonessence labs Concero DAC compared with the Young, and that didn't manage much either!

The next step is to pinch my mate's MDAC when he goes on holiday, and live with that (minus pre-amp) for a week.

So far, this classy little Italian number has been capable of presenting every system change I've made, from amp changes to computer mods, and as yet, I don't think I have found it's limit. It's most certainly not 'HiFi' in that dry sense, it's about passion, vivace and musical flair. In musical terms, it's the difference between a good performance and a fantastic performance on a good night.

Thanks for allaying my curiosity. :) (for now)

Hi Alan,
agree with the musical ability of the Young and that it brings out the performance, flair..all the things that make a performance.

The Mytek sounded a bit "technically all present and accounted for" to me, not as enjoyable.
Not clinical or mechanical either, but just missing that...something.

At this level (and price!) you'd really need to hear and new Dacs in your own system.

I was surprised at the result too.
Always good to remember that the Mytek has a great feature set, but like the Mdac (for me), has features I wouldn't use.

The Young to me is the natural successor to my Rega Dac in musical involvement and philosophy, it gets out the way and makes music a bit special.
Though they sound very different!

I'd be maybe looking to listen to the Young Vaughn as a contender...?

Gaz tried a power inspired regen unit , ruined the sound of my system & many other line filters
Flat a lifeless with it connected only badly designed equipment needs a regen unit
if the gear has a quallty PSU built-in does not need anything on the mains
Power inspired unit is just a very cheap asian double conversion unit for PCs
Efficiency of the unit is just shocking 85% has a noisy fan to cool the unit , very 1970s
my PV inverter/regen is 97% with no fans + server built in

as you have heard Gaz , all my sanders gear uses a patented linear voltage PSU , I fact roger sanders the designer warns that they are a waste of money
some light reading
http://sanderssoundsystems.com/technical-white-papers/esl-amp-wp

also ruined the sound with my Set & PP valve amps as well , but these have decent valve PSU @ 90kgs
better spend your cash on decent mains cables
Have a lessloss Firewall Filter due next week for a Client but these are real top end bit of kit

works with the mains plugged directly into the wall or supplied by the Sun for free
with my system powered by a 4kw regen unit ( my roof mounted solar system ) solar inverters convert DC/AC much better than regen units with much lower THD
