View Full Version : Squeezebox Touch EDO Module
Hi all,
I have recently installed the Enhanced Digital Output Module on my SB Touch after recommendation from Stan and help from MartinT and can confirm it has made quite a significant and very much worthwhile improvement to the overall sound and presentation, through my Caiman DAC.
Treble has opened up and become sweeter, bass seems tighter and maybe even a little deeper and vocals, WOW, it's as though the artist is physically standing in the room!
Definitely a worthwhile upgrade and for free, how can you complain...

Of course it would help us much more if you would tell us about the cable between your SBT (USB/Coax/optical) and your dac and the kind of files played that sound so much better. :scratch:

I have a Beresford Caiman plus Gatorized and all music sounds better, I use a mix of FLAC, Apple Lossless, AAC and MP3.

What cable connects your Caiman to your Touch, USB, optical or coax cable.
Sorry, it's a coax Chord cable.
It's an excellent upgrade by Triode IMHO
I have 2 SBTouches downstairs and it's improved both...
SBT+EDO(USB only out)+linear PSU+Sbooster/USB hub/iFi USB cable/iFi USB power/Kimber USB cable/Audiolab M-DAC(A10)
and
SBT+EDO(digital/analogue out)+Sbooster/Mini-T(5A psu)
...so it's improved both the digital & analogue outputs :)
For what it's worth I've also installed the 'Screen Off' screensaver from triode too, which is nice...but there are a few issues with 2 touches synchronised
Same here. I wouldn't be without EDO running. It elevates a competent product to the status of a giant killer. I originally downloaded it just to try out USB output into my 8200CDQ and found that that method of connection just sounds a lot more natural and less digital than either the coax or the optical output. I always rated coax above optical with the touch, but now optical sits in third position.
It's also worth playing around with the buffer settings within EDO too. I find the large buffer setting to sound best although it does cause delays in output of about 5 seconds when you're switching between different streams, but I can live with that. YMMV of course.
The biggest revelation for me though was swapping out different USB cables. I bought a Kimber USB (cheap) when I was using a Caiman and found it to be a big improvement over a standard USB, but now with the Touch and 8200CDQ I find the opposite is true. The cheap cable that came with my old scanner doesn't make everything sound as sterile as the Kimber seems to do.

I agree Rich. I knew within two minutes of installing EDO and switching to USB that I wouldn't be going back to Coaxial and I have a great one made by Mike Homar.
Hmmm, wonder if Mike would make me a USB cable?

I wouldn't be changing them connectors over - there's a SBooster with 2.1mm internal diameter already fitted (fits the Bushmaster and also my M2Tech Evo DAC, and the PSU for the Amptastic T-Amp we have here.
The ones for the Touch are 2.5mm internal diameter

Unfortunately my spare SBoosters come from my SB Receivers and have fixed connectors, which are not compatible with the mini-t...as I said I'm Maplins bound, a couple of adaptors should do the trick...:eyebrows:
So you will see from one of my other posts that I was having problems with the SB Touch connecting to the Logitech software. I seem to have fixed this now by setting a fixed IP address.
Anyway, to set a static IP , I had to 'Factory Reset' the SB Touch, which obviously removed the EOD Module.
So, I listen to the stock Touch and then reinstalled EOD... That again showed me how good this FREE module is.. Anyone who has a SB Touch and an external DAC and chooses not to install this module must be nuts... It takes this mediocre streaming devices to a serious contender and like I said above it's free!!!!

Mark of MGC gave me a very good trade in for my two receiver SBoosters, and replaced them with;
1 * 2.5mm for my Mini-T (it's one of the original ones)
1 * 2.1mm for my Bantam
...I've not given the Bantam a serious listen yet, but the Mini-T has definitely picked up on bass/punch.

You've just missed one step on the EDO install options by the sound of things.....you can set it to re-install any 3rd party applets/add ons following an update & I believe it works following a factory reset too.
to save some time I'm quoting myself from an answer given on the Wam last year. The bit I've highlighted in red is most likely the final piece of the puzzle you're missing Paul......hope so in any case!! :)

As you suspect It's been covered in a few threads by now....nonetheless it's still useful info.....& the good news is its a total doddle to install/set up & also gives the option for those using SBT wiv a Dac to select a digital output only option/set vol to 100% etc. lol I set mine up in the main system a while back now, but your post has just reminded me that I haven't yet installed it on the SBT in the bedroom system http://www.hifiwigwam.com/images/smilies/f_doh.gif, so I'll b attending to that laterhttp://www.hifiwigwam.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
For those who haven't yet tried installed/tried it, you need to do it all direct from the SBT itself....NOT USING FULL VERSION OF L.M.S. USING WEB BROWSER on p.c./lappy etc. ...this won't work folks, it's easiest if you use the supplied remote & use the screen for navigation.
Steps are) Press Home>Scroll down to App Gallery>Scroll to 3rd Party Apps>Scroll down to Enhanced digital Output>install, SBT will then reboot....following this on the first install you will be given the option of disabling the analogue output or using both outputs,setting vol fixed at 100% & this will b remembered for subsequent re-installs/updates>SBT will again reboot on the first install should you select this option, but subsequently once set up this will all be done in one step with no additional user input http://www.hifiwigwam.com/images/smilies/thumbs_up.gif

I think the last update was a month or so back & was to version .5 , I've just updated main SBT & installed on the bedroom one & the current version of EDO (Enhanced Digital Output) is now .7

Trying to decide which is better out of the SB touch; a coaxial QED qunex SIG75 or supra X-ZAC optical into the V-dac II. So the touch is better with coaxial while the V-dac is better with optical. The computer is using the USB currently but has a coaxial out too. :scratch: This means im going to have to do far too much cable switching.

Joe, I prefer the coax connection myself, not tried USB though as the iMac feeding the Touch is upstairs.
