Which pieces of equipment would you use these caps in?
Morning, Tony.
I must admit four weeks on the Amalfi coast would be just the ticket right now :)
We're driving from Wales to Tuscany (hence what the 'hearse', the Merc, lol, was mainly bought for), via France (and possibly Switzerland too, depending on what route we choose), so generally, as we take it easy, we spend 4 days on the journey, stopping at some lovely little places, en-route, as we go way off the beaten track, sight-seeing and collecting wine and various goodies, so about a week of our holiday is spent travelling.
Here's one of our favourite haunts, en-route to Italy, and typical of the places we like to stop at in France: http://aumoulindalexandre.fr/index.php

Looking forward to all of us sitting there, sipping apéritifs before dinner! :exactly:
This year, when we're in Italy, we're taking my parents (who are travelling with us) to the Cinque Terre, the 'five lands' (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinque_Terre), for 4 days of our holiday, basing ourselves in the stunnigly beautiful and historic town of Vernazza. Some images:

The remainder of the time will be spent in the beautiful mountain village of Barga (near Pisa), where my family originally come from:

http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/7448/barga3.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/838/barga3.jpg/)
Then, back through France again, topping up on goodies, etc, before returning home. We can't wait!! :yay:
You must pop in and say hello in the not too distant future Marco.
I'd love to, Tony. Let's diary a date, once the holidays are over, for later in the year :)
Marco.

Morning Ali
I have indeed, again a high quality cap that does produce transparent and musical sound and some of the high end manufacturers use these great caps as OE I believe.
In some applications the size is more beneficial than the traditional cylindrical sizes.
Both V and Auric Caps are very expensive, if you have project you feel is going to give sterling results then these products will deliver like no other.
I would suggest using a couple of small TFTF-oil's as power supply bypass to obtain a taste of what these products can do.
That way you don't break the bank and will get to hear their benefits.
Tony
Thanks Tony.

Cheers, dude. Hope you're off somewhere nice this year, too! :)

A common use for expensive caps like these is for coupling between stages in a valve amp, the most common sizes being 0.22 and 0.47uf. They can be used anywhere really, but given the cost, they are generally used where they will have the best influence on sound, so in the signal path or in the power supply. Problem with caps like these is that the larger values for power supply duties are physically large and extremely expensive. You could as Tony suggests bypass your existing PS caps with small values, which is a cheaper option.

Thanks for the advice; so this logic can be applied to DACs too?
Is it a space not tuning the sound, or generally accepted that an upgrade should yield an improvement?

Well it's something you have to try for yourself IMHO. Everyone has their own favourite caps. Try giving Clarity Caps a go, they are cheap and very good I think, give you 80% or more of what the really expensive caps will. Just be aware the larger values are very big!

Of course, if we want to get picky, changing your tone stack caps, from NOS mustards to paper in oil or to WIMAs or to those already mentioned or to "run of the mill whatever you can find", is kind of the same thing as purposefully using a coloured cable. What we're doing now is "tone shaping" where technically a purist would be looking for the cap that "disappears"; "keeping the circuit out of the circuit" in a manner of speaking. I would hope that to be the aim of all boutique caps (for hi-fi applications); but, I haven't heard them all and so, can't say. But then again, when it comes to valve gear, I tend toward the vintage rather than absolute transparency; in which case I would probably opt for a passive preamp straight into a power amp. I don't as the resulting sound is too lifeless for me. I also tend to use carbon comp resistors in the tone stack rather than carb or metal film despite carbon comps tendency to drift out of spec more quickly over time. Again, it would be nice if there was more middle ground between what comps and film lend to the presentation.
Nevertheless, I agree with those that take the neutrality stance with cables. Whatever "tone shaping" or "eq'ing" or lack thereof is going on, I would rather it happen at the component level as opposed to "in cable"... ...regardless of price. Cables are pretty much a necessary evil for me.
Then again (grin) how do we know what a component really sounds like? Generally, it's got to go through a cable... or two. Perhaps there is a better way; but, what I'm left with is consensus. If one cable among ten is noticeably different then the other 9, which sound very similar, either that is one fantastic cable or it is a significantly coloured cable and will most likely be tossed off my workbench... ...regardless of price.

It's all a compromise, the trick is to find the compromise that suits you best.

Agreed. No sense listening to something you don't like... music or gear.
