As the title suggests, any recommended carts either vintage or modern day would be most welcome!

Rega have always catered for Mono, they did & probably still do mono cartridges.. I think they used to make a dedicated 78rpm 'Planar' deck at one point!

Hi Andrew,

MC or MM?

The best value and one of the best sounding MC mono cartridges is the Denon DL-102. On a high-mass arm, it sounds fantastic! Shure do some decent MM ones, as do Ortofon and Grado - amongst others.

What sort of sound are you after and what's your budget? :)

Marco.

MC, altough my phonostage has MM input as well. I've been given loads of mono LP's mainly beatles/stones/beach boys etc. I'm running them through the Cadenza black, some sound ok, some crap, thought a dedicated mono cart might help

Not sure what sound I'm after It will be running through the Radford/301/ Tannoy setup, does that answer your question? Sorry! Budget, well couple hundred quid, maybe more, old classic are also an after thought!

Rega still do the 78 mono cartridge and there is also the Ortofon 2M mono, which is rather good.

A mono Decca of course - to match the stereo Decca you also need.

I believe some mono cartridges are not optimised for mono in that they still have stereo coils, some say this has an effect. Probably with a Decca disconnecting the correct coil will get you closer to perfection - or if buying a mono Decca it would possibly come without one of the coils.

A 'proper' mono Decca doesn't have the vertical coils. John Wright can convert a 'normal' stereo Decca to mono, or on the older 4 pin ones, you can just connect to the horizontal coil only for mono, and leave the vertical coils unconnected.

It was originally designed as mono anyway, and the vertical coils only got bolted on when stereo came along.
