My 1973 vintage wardrobes arrived last night and apart from 40 years worth of knocks and scratches are in very good condition. One thing worried me. On opening the back of the cabinet I noticed the front port under the driver had been sealed internally. TheRe is a 3mm piece of plywood which has been screwed over the port. Is this normal and should it be removed
Thanks

As I recall, 15" Lancasters were normally sealed boxes and the 12" models were ported.
however I have seen ported 15" ones. Whether a ported model was ever a standard production model I can't say, but there are many Lancaster cabinet drawings and photos on the net which may help.
I think just removing the blanking board may leave the system not correctly 'tuned' and the port may need to be lengthened into the cabinet to achieve the correct bass response.

Not with 15" drivers. That is perfectly right.

One thing I found with the 12" drivers is that taking the backs off the Lancasters sounded better regardless of the port so if you can try them without the backs then give it a go... might work better in your space, might not...
The lancasters are more at home with 8" to 10" drivers. Even for 12" the cabs are way too small.

Well, taking the backs off will certainly kill any cabinet boom. The speakers will basically be working as dipoles, the results will be very unpredictable and may be awful or good depending on the room and placement.
Years ago I built a pair of Lancaster copy cabinets with 10" Tannoy IIILZ drivers and Goodmans Dimension 8, 10" ABR units in. It worked and the bass was more extended than in the normal IIILZ cabinet. But the limiting factor was the IIILZ driver which just won't produce serious deep bass no matter what you do with it. The HPD 295A would have been far better.

So leave the port sealed up then?

Yep.. I would. Well for now at least. Open it up once you have settled with how they sound sealed.

Well if it was me I'd be experimenting with the port, but I'm an incurable tinkerer.

One thing at a time is my way...
