Preamble
Recently when I visited Electricbeach I heard the Oppo 103eu sound really good so I wanted to test it results in my own system
A fantastic opportunity came up towards haring the Oppo 103 and 105 go up against a 2pc set up against the Octavia and Ciunas DACS
The results were interesting
The results
The Octavia really seem to focus well in the mid whilst the Ciunas had better treble and bass I had a preference for the Ciunas but the differences were not great and I could easily live with either DAC in my set up
The Oppo 103 ( We used the Oppo with a USB Stick) had lots of detail but had some grain, this might be that the player needs more time to burn in. When using the Octavia this was completely removed and was very hard to tell it from the 2pc set up with the Octavia
The 105 is very detailed and has a lot of attack and it brought the sound more forward I liked this effect but the others preferred the refinement of the Ciunas .
After the listening experience I really did think it was horses for courses, with no clear winners, expect that the Ciunas with 2pc set up was liked by two people, whilst I probably had a slight preference for the 105, but now need to judge it in my own system as my system is set up for a lot of attack and I am not sure if this will tip it over the edge. I report back latter
