Thanks, Marco - the pic is a happy accident rather than any example of skill though (unlike many others here).

I've never thought of the Aro on a Techy, but there's no reason why it shouldn't work well I guess - it would need a custom armboard though. The stylus tip to bearing pivot is the same as for Linn arms but everything else is different and a Linn mount board cannot be used. Of course the Aro has now been discontinued by Naim - apparently there just wasn't enough profit in it to justify the difficulty of manufacture and numbers sold.

Yup, I'm not really surprised by that. I visited the Naim factory once (on a personal invite from Paul Stephenson, back in 2003) and saw where the Aros were built - quite fascinating, actually!

Unipivots work really well on the Techy, as their inherent musical sounding qualities counteract the sterility one can sometimes get when the synergy isn't right. I've heard a Nima and a Hadcock sound wonderful, on a Techy, so there's no reason why an Aro shouldn't - probably even more so :)

Yeah, of course Naim didn't actually make any of the mechanical parts for the Aro themselves (though they did build them in to the finished item) and they were only produced in small batches, so manufacturing costs would have been high.

The Nima is very like a budget Aro in terms of design and construction (though I've never listened to one).

I had thought the CA Emotion might be a lateral move from my P5 that I sunk at least $1k in upgrades.
It was not. This table kills the pP5 surprisingly.
I got sick of all the fixes to the Rega. I had them all.

The new Ragas have more than a bit of QC issues and I looked at the P6 too. I would never buy new.
They still have some of the same stupid design issues like that crap sub-platter being the biggest, wiring too.
The P8 is over priced here. They can't seem to be able to make something that does not wobble.
Oh, I noticed the correct speed on this table immediately. Why do Regas run consistently fast?

I have had 3 Rega's and at least 3 other Rega RB300's, so it's not like I wasn't satisfied. Just how I feel now.
I don't need to mess with upgrades.

Now Rega comes out with a 40th anniversary model that isn't much different than cosmetics to a a RP3 for $300. more. Come....on!

Very good. Better than my SP10. Stable, powerful, calm & very dynamic. Notes bloom & develop completely. The drive system or more importantly the combination of motor & platter gives it a much smoother & more believable tonal quality than I've had before. I like it alot.

The only thing I can say is that I hope it sounds much better than the Oasis, which I wasn't taken by at all, and which my modded Techy totally outperformed, causing a friend (who owned the Oasis) to sell it the following day! However, I trust your ears, and if you say that the STST is better than your SP10 (which I've heard a few times and rate), then that's good enough for me to consider it is definitely a contender! :exactly:

I'm loving the new Sony. The best vintage Sony D/Ds deserve more recognition, IMO, as they are fantastic and would eat a stock Techy alive! Again, I love how the Sony looks, which is very solid and purposeful - and that's probably how it sounds, too!

How does it compare, sonically, with your other T/Ts? We'll need to have another sesh soon! :cool:

I've only ever heard the Brinkmann DD's at shows (& even then they often play the bigger belt drive models) so I haven't really been able to form an opinion re their merits or otherwise. They also always seem to use that EMT derived cartridge which I'm not really a fan of.

This is the 10" version. Derived from the Mission Mechanic as I understand it although with a CF tube.

That's interesting - as I recall, the Mechanic was itself a version of the Zeta.

The balance weights for the chassis are also interesting. Although others have used a similar approach using one weight the use of twin weights allows pitch adjustment around the yaw axis. I've built a chassis in the past that used a weight to balance out the mass of the arm, but in a subsequent design I deleted this element because I was uncomfortable about adding parasitic mass - though I really have no direct evidence that this is an issue.

The one element I'm not very keen on is the secondary leaf suspension intended to stabilise the main suspension. I'm not against such a concept, I'm just not that keen on the way it has been implemented in this case.

Those leaf springs can be fully disengaged although I haven't tried it yet. I'd normally tend towards less suspension damping rather than more particularly in a design such as this which ought to be inherently fairly stable as is.

I'm not sure what if any history there was with regard to the 'Mechanic' & who was originally selling it in Germany. It was a GB Tools item that came along after the Zeta iirc. It'll be interesting to try this take on it at some point.

I'm sure that the son of Mick Gray posted a few images of his Dad's most recent efforts on a couple of forums not that long ago. A seriously heavy affair with an off board high rpm flywheel augmenting it. I think he's now based in Sheffield & the turntable was called Dark Energy. I'll have to try to find a link.

Hi Marco hope you're well. The Sony is a brand new purchase so too early to say really. It's immaculate with an interesting back story so it will remain in its current state. I've not even connected it up to the main rig yet but it looks and feels like a top class bit of kit.

Right then, last night I was fortunate enough to venture out to a local eaterie to celebrate my pending birthday (next week) with the family. It was strange place to spy what could possibly be the finest ever "piece" of analogue art I ever laid eyes on. This turntable was sculptured by hand and the person who made it has to rate as one of the finest craftsmen (or woman actually as she works with my wife). Painstakingly sculptured and attention to detail second to none........................

Based on t' packed files size of 87.2kb that would easily fit on a floppy D which could conceivably make you older than you seem to be alluding:lol:. Based on your well known anachronistic/anoraky* predilections (*You choose;)) of c. You could simply be using CD's/DVD's I guess, but I've at least had some fun with t' possibilities.

Yes,it is a concern and has been like that for a fair while.
I have to use the lowest tracking i can get away with and the weight end higher just so there is enough clearance.

Seems likely that the tie wire has slipped (it is held by a grub screw). You should be able to track at more than the maximum recommended tracking weight without the body touching the record. It also looks like the arm is rather too low at the back - though that may be an optical illusion.

The cart was redone only about 2 years ago.
I have a feeling it may have got damaged at scalford from a springy floor and cart bouncing when people walking near it.

Looks like the red panel is just a trim. Wouldn't that risk feeding vibration/feedback colourations back through the TT? Maybe it has enough mass not to cause problems.

The decks bolted through the red top so there's no visible fixings. The arm holder is threaded too so its secure. On my Green Twist plinth the Green part is just a trim piece, held down with double sided tape, I hadn't thought of dual colour back then.

As ever when playing around with 'prototypes' things get modified here and there, a file here, a chisel there etc etc, so the result is a little less than immaculate. There is no finish on at all yet of course and the problem with this one is that it sounds so damn good that it may just stay as it is for a while!!

I snagged a Sansui DD in bits on French eBay. This is my first listen to a DD and I love the stability which seems to give a solidity to the sound, especially on drums and piano. The Sansui wasn't the most expensive out there but the 'plinth' is solid and heavy (turned pine.plywood sandwich) and I will add further weight I think.

Damn, more just sitting in front of the hi-fi.

It`s the only one I would consider keeping for sentimental reasons. I bought it in Germany in circa74. Only one careful owner!! HeHe.

The arm is rubbish and the plinth is showing its age but the actual deck is fine. Will probably outlive me so it might get its own back!:lol: for my negligence over the years.

Favourably Mike. To be honest i wanted a cheap and cheerfut turntable to play 7" and 12" singles on so i didn'r keep haveing to change the belt over on my Notts. However, i find mydelf listening to more and more of my older LP's on it too. The Notts is a very refined sounding TT where as the Lenco is fun and plays great tunes. I love them both but i have the rip with the Lenco.

Mind you, the one in your picture looks like someone's been mucking around with it - the feet, platter and arm are non original. I'd beware if you were thinking of buying it... :D

thanks Andy. i think it'll look better when the psu is sat next to it in the same wood finish, and with a new headshell (possibly an old orsonic at this point, but carbon fibre oyaide or ortofon when i have the cash)

the really good part is it sounds better than it looks!!!!!!! mostly down to the cartridge being awesome :)

however, i think the pioneer might look better in the flesh. it's such a lovely thing, and the vu meter for the speed just makes it better (that might just be the geek in me though....) ideally i think the Jelco on the pioneer would make a lot of sense as the arm/plinth are very similar colours.

I don't know what a slip platter clutch is, assume I haven't got one !

The 135 shares the 124 drive system, but thats about it, single solid platter with a none changeable bearing. Pressed steel chassis vs cast. Don't let the cost cutting put anyone off, it sounds great (different to the Garrards) but no less enjoyable.

Wow, that's great, and it looks like an interesting armboard arrangement. I toyed with black - it probably would have been wiser in case I get sick of the red. Looks very smart indeed, and goes with most curtains :)

In the flesh it is really more like London bus red, but the sun was shining and I probably set too much saturation when I processed the files. The shot which cuts off the bottom of the plinth shows the colour most accurately. It sounds completely addictive, and I'm loving my Garrard journey. Total music. The cartridge is indeed an OC9 MicroLine mk II, which is terrific with the right loading and a deck which plays bass like the 301.

Thanks, yes I get a lot of pleasure from it and compared to what Audio Note appear to be charging for a new one it's incredible value for money (and maybe one day black furniture will come back in fashion! ;-))

Looks like Amadeus GT. Nearly as dusty as mine. Firebaugh is a bloody genius to deliver such a fine deck out of bric-a-brac. That's why I went for a white golf ball.

It's a loaner from a mate while he gets mine built, which will be pretty much the same, just with a chamfer round all the outside edges to soften the look a bit. Sounds great with the 401.
