My 'slight' speaker upgrade!

I've wanted a pair of these since I was 10! So glad to finally have them. I'll be moving shortly so they'll be going in a decently sized room pretty soon and I'll be grabbing a much more powerful amp too.

Waking up to them every morning is like the opening scene from Back to the Future :)

Thanks for the kind words, still can't quite believe I have these beauties, it's literally a dream come true. Most 21 year-olds buy a car that they'll smash up, I bought a pair of speakers that may last me the rest of my life instead...

Well, the GR10s were actually really good. I had no qualms about how they sounded to be honest. Extremely good with bass for a standmount.

These things are just another level though. The biggest difference I notice is the treble. I never thought the GR10s lacked any high end or felt that they were undetailed, but when I got the 802s I set them up in the living room and had them running with my dads XA-200s. One of the first things I played through them was Once Upon a Time in the West by Dire Straits. A song that does dynamics quite well I think. It's the first time I've heard proper dynamics in cymbals which were crystal clear and smooth. The treble on my HD650s doesn't convey the physical hits on the cymbals nearly as well as the 802s. The way the high end and midrange mix together is something I haven't heard done this well either at home. It's made me notice the separation of mid/high that my dads GR20s have. I ran through the usual first array of test tracks, listening to Nickel Creeks Ode to a Butterfly was great with this midrange and tweeter combination - stunningly delicate and lifelike.

Bass performance didn't go unnoticed either. A run through of Trentemollers The Last Resort album had the house shaking at its foundations. One thing I have noticed is that although the GR10s could do low-end just fine, it was only there in quantity, not quality. Listening to some electronic stuff like Infected Mushroom on these is incredible. It brings out a whole new bunch of eerie synth textures that make you feel funny.

Very impressed with them so far, but I can hear the huge difference that the XA-200s had over my A3 and I know they still deserve a far better amp than the XA-200s, so I'll set my sights higher than that.

So yeah, very impressed with them so far. My previous audio benchmark was my HD650s, but the 802s walk all over them. Such a more natural and dynamic presentation. :)

Studios used to use humungous HH Mos-FET beasties on their ancestors. Good Watts don't have to be expensive if a blingy case isn't part of the equation :)

like Al i nearly bypassed this as i thought a slight speaker upgrade meant a wipe on the 'nana plugs with a 'J' cloth,

:D. Just a tad! Actually, 813 is quite nice in triode mode, and you can get about 30w/ch or so. Not bad for SE.
