View Full Version : 'Grumpy Old Git' Thread!

Having started the 'Pet Hates' thread a while back, I realise now how many things piss me off, probably because I am literally a 'Grumpy Old Git' myself, so I thought I'd start a thread for 'Grumpy Old Gits' and see if there's any interest.

I'll let another 'Grumpy Old Git' AOS member start the ball rolling before I contribute.

Say something from the point of view of a 'Grumpy Old Git' or, to be fair, about 'Grumpy Old Gits'.

I rather liked something Stephen Fry winged about on a repeat of QI on Dave recently (where I suspect a few GOGs hang out).

Why do US Army generals often wear sunglasses indoors - tossers.

As I was typing this and thinking about people wearing sunglasses at inappropriate times I then thought of Bono, and my blood pressure immediately hit unsafe levels - world class tosser.

Well, I find the modern fashion for tatoos and body piercings pretty repellent.

In fact if someone has facial piercings (or "rivets" as I call them), I find I have avoid looking at them directly.

Most tattos are badly executed or are just plain banal.

Where do I start....

The cost of parking your car
The cost of not parking your car
People looking at you
People not looking at you
People who use the word "like" every other word...well "it was like"...well was it, or was it just like it? ffs...you sound so stupid.
"Can I get a skinny Latte"...NO..you can't get it they will get it for you
People who see "phantom" cars and stop at roundabouts when there are no cars to stop for
Cadbury's recent adverts

That'll do for now....:D

Sadly I qualify in that I can identify with all the above + I rember when you could get change from 6d (old pence for the yoofs), 2.5p in today's money when buying fish and chips plus some 'scraps'. My first half pint of beer, aged 16, in the off licence at a pub in the neighbouring village, cost 6.5d marginally over 2.5p in today's money.
And when copper and silver coins actually contained some copper and silver, respectively.
My BP monitor tells me I should stop now, before the £1 coin becomes the smallest one in ciculation :) .

Correct Answer:
Certainly. Of course you may. Off you go and get it then.
And thank you so much for asking, but next time you really don't need to bother.

Actually, a very good lady friend of mine has tattoos and piercings just about everywhere (yes, there too). But, she's a really nice person and good company and in a strange way all the artificial embellishments seem to suit her.

What about those people who play with their pissing iphones all the time. It's very, very annoying.

And, be honest, WTF is there to watch on the TV these days? Soaps (shite), reality paint a house, cook a meal, train a dog, eat a meal, buy a house abroad, drive over some frigging ice, decorate your home, spend a night with the traffic cops, round-up some sheep, lay a hedge, etc. FFS who thinks this complete dross up.

I'll tell you what really pisse dme off the other day......
Me and Mrs me went on a short cruise down to Spain and Portugal. Not a cheap holiday but we felt we needed a break. The great thing about cruises is the food and the entertainment as well as the chance to visit lots of different places in a short amount of time.
Anyway, one night they had this singer on in one of the entertainment venues - pretty decent he was too.
This whole family of chavs turn up, first thing they do is move a load of seats around so they could get a better view. Then they all start jumping up taking video footage with their smart phones and such like. Fuck anybody actually trying to watch the show. then they spent the rest of it showing each other the footage they had just taken and arguing with each other.
No doubt when they got home they all showed their mates this great show they went to. Pity none of them will be able to say what the guy was actually singing. Twats.

Fuggin' builders and related tradesmen!

I was in the doghouse all last weekend because we were going to have our porch repaired and tarted up, something we'd been holding off for some years due to financial constraints. Madame was anxious and directed her frustration my way (that's one of the things hubbies are for IMO :)). Monday comes and the chippie turns up, rips the glass panelled roof off and sets to work on removing the rotten bits of wood and sealing the remainder with hardener. In fairness he leaves a tarpaulin over the open roof. Tuesday comes and the gaps ere nicely filled, the bad rafter replaced and the repaired bits undercoated. Wednesday the roofer comes, does a fantastic job fitting a new slate roof to the porch but doesn't have suitable ridge-tiles. I offered to go out of my way after work to buy some reclaimed ones (only needed three!) and got them home ready to be fitted.

Now the moan - Thursday comes bright and sunny - a LOVELY day in east Suffolk. No friggin' roofer. Friday and it's raining. Exposed battens getting wet although we're fully water-tight and the modern gland/whatever under the slates looks to be very well installed. Roofer says he'll do it by the weekend! This morning, I get up early to await the roofer. No fuggin' show. Sky looks threatening with rain and of course no reasonable soul works on a Sunday :( I wouldn't mind but I reckon this final bit would only take half a day if that - probably half an hour for an experienced chap with the cement made up...

Good advice Martin

The biggest problem with any system for meeting the opposite sex is honesty. Met a few wimmin in the past that were bordering on basket cases and conversely some great ladies too. None of the loons I met were honest and upfront enough to state clearly in their advert "I am a miserable cranky bitch with an alcohol problem, intensely possessive too, who intends to spend every waking hour making your life a misery" do they?

Do the job yersel David if it's that quick and simple :eyebrows: I wouldn't stand for someone messing me around like that.

When I first moved to Cornwall I wanted the driveway done with tarmac and rang a few contractors to get quotes. They all agreed to turn up on Friday but they never said WHICH Friday did they? Cornwall at it's best :eyebrows: I did the job myself in the end even though I have never tackled anything like that before. It took nearly 2 months for the first clown to show up to give me a quote. Idiot Online auction sellers that cost you money thru their Incompetence

Example: (& this has happend to me loads of times)..

You buy item, seller make a mistake sending the wrong item, you have to return it to get a swap or refund.. In my experience you never get a swap because that means the seller will have to pay out of his pocket to post back, hence will end up as a refund! So basically you have paid two lots of postage for nothing, ended up with nothing.. :steam:

This is exactly why i use Amazon for things, you don't get any charges for returning goods if somethings wrong..

Accidents happen André. In my case, how I react depends on the attitude of the buyer. It is not unknown for buyers to attempt to screw sellers by claiming the wrong item has been sent so it pays to be wary. It has happened to me on more than one occasion. Usually they are rude in their communications so they are easy to spot. If the buyer is genuine however and the item is of fairly low value I will refund the cash and postage and tell them to keep what has been sent. If it is a more valuable item then I would take responsibility for my mistake and pay all the postage ;)

That's definitely the way to do it. Sometimes there's a misunderstanding or a problem arises that is nobody's fault and I don't mess people about, I deal with the situation sensibly and fairly.

When I do detect a 'messer', I'm inclined to dig my heels in. I'm dealing with a guy now who wants a refund on a 'defective' camera. I suggested that on return, I would have the camera assessed for misuse by a professional repairer and claim all those costs plus any PayPal refund, etc., via the small claims court. Now he seems unwilling to return the camera.

Tesco bread.

Is it me, or is it just getting worse?

None of their bread is what I'd describe as great. But I went in my local Tesco Metro or whatever they call it today and bought a baguette. Second time I've had one this bad now, it tasted stale, it was dry without being properly crusty and it was bland and starchy. The worst I've ever had. Truly appalling!

I reckon these are kept frozen, then crisped up the day before they go on sale. I don't see how you could achieve such a degree of horribleness otherwise.

Sainsbury manage to turn out far more acceptable bread at similar prices, so Tesco have no real excuse.

I work for a local baker in Liskeard and their bread is way better than any supermarket or mainline branded bread like Warburton's or Kingsmill. Tiger batch is my favourite and both Tesco's and Morrisons is way overcooked (There is no setting on their ovens for tiger bread so it needs close watching all the time), plus they are flattened with split sides too already so can you imagine what they are like after going through the slicing machine? They would look better being left out on the motorway for half an hour.

Most of the supermarkets receive their bread ready shaped and frozen, so all the bakers do is slam them in the oven for the final baking.
