Cartridge sensitivity!

I'm presently using a Stanton '681' cart & as the cartridge travels closer to the centre of the record i get a moderate hum occuring, on close inspection i see a large relay bang under side of the TT that it obviously does not like :(

I don't think it will be a long term problem as i plan either having a thin copper pre-matt making or a copper plate attaching to the TT, under the platter, one of these options should shield that relay!

Does anyone else have any issues with this cart? just out of interest i did pop on a cheap ortofon which gave me no issues :)

Had a bit of hum problem back in the but it was near the end of side, think it was picking up motor noise or bearing rumble,(Sansui SR222 and Planar2)
not had that problem from my LP12 onwards.

The copper mat should sort it, or you could try some Mu-metal shielding, in sheet form:

The self-adhesive stuff is excellent and can be cut to size and simply stuck to the underneath of your platter, or on top, under the mat - it's very effective! I'd imagine you can probably also get it in the UK.

Btw, I'm curious, what's a "relay bang"? :scratch:

Sounds like something 'doggers' might get up to in a car park...... :D

'Bang Underside' which means the relay is right under where the hum gets it's worse hence i'm assuming this is the cause.

Just a thought - does the Stanton have the little strap to connect the metal shell to one of the ground pins? The usual metal lugs can also give hum loops, made worse by nearby transformers and relays activated "on."

Current fixed coil Rega cartridges suffer hum induction too, but the latest 24V motors may well avoid this.

One thing is for certain in my experience - hum is an additive thing - a little in one area is easily added to if another area suffers too, one almost feeding off the other, if that makes sense.

Probably not related but I got a tad of hum even with tone arm ground connected to SUT and then looped to the preamp. However, a third ground connected to the tonearm L & R RCA plug grounds and then to the preamp totally eliminated it - probably just a feature of my setup though :eyebrows:

Dave is right. I've experienced hum with both makes in an unsympathetic environment.

Na this cart is getting on my wires, still the same on a fresh deck & amp.. Im looking for a cart with simular sound signature but must be an early to mid 70's cart :eyebrows: reasonable priced available styli for it..

I'd venture to say that's your issue right there. From the factory, that strap is supposed to be there (from shell/shield to blue pin). Have you tested to see if you have the same hum with the XV15? If not, there t'is. I've only experience humming Stantons wherein the strap has been removed.

As an aside, I've found Techies, in particular, to be very hard on carts with no integral shielding. Grados are generally a no go on every Techy I have, at least. All other shielded carts... no problem.

I know what your saying regarding the strap but i'm thru with this cartridge now, it's a bit like a girl friend that does the dirty on you, you piss her off & move on..Ive always always had hum issues with these cartridges, strap on or not :eyebrows:

I do listern to headphones more than speakers so you can maybe understand humming will drive me nuts on quiet passages..

No idea. Mine has a brand new genuine JVC standard (conical) stylus. It's a nice sounding cartridge, as I believe you know.
