I no longer use MGs. I'm using later 12" ceramic magnet drivers. They sound wonderful.

Are yours in cabinets or have you just bought drivers so far?

This is where it all starts matey... These are your last pair of speakers. Just get them in some decent cabs, update the crossovers slightly.

Yep, I'll have to keep scouting eBay, worse case scenario is that i get a pair made up. I think the x-o will be the first thing to do. I must admit i'm a little unsure which route to go down first, cabs or x-o. What do you think?

I really like the classic looks of the Lancaster cabinet.

With a bit of thought and care it can actually be made to sound very good. A couple of open bracing shelves and diagonal panel stiffening battens works wonders. The internal damping is normally about right. Most of the 15" Lancasters I've seen were sealed and not ported (but I have seen ported ones). The addition of a decent, properly tuned reflex port or two can extend the bass usefully. The front panel is removable for working on via screws inside, through the battens behind the panel.

Bung in a rewire and component check and upgrade and you'd have a great pair of Tannoys looking the way they should.

The 12" Monitor Gold Lancasters I've seen were all ported if I recall. Presumably to allow a bass response approaching that of the 15" unit. Strangely the smaller Chatsworth was always sealed (nice speaker, I had a pair years ago).

As Geoff suggests, the Lanky's can be made better by a little careful bracing (don't overdo it) and a couple of ports added. I can supply the port diameters and lengths which would give the best result for the cab volume if you PM me the approximate internal dimensions.

If you have crossovers with them, they'll likely be fine bar a need for updating the caps and cleaning the switches. Resistors should be fine (you can test them with a multimeter anyway) as should inductors/autoformers.

If you want to send them to me in the post, I'd be happy to update them for you and upgrade the lighting flex which passes for a crossover to driver cable!

Now this is why I belong to AOS how many people offer advice and a help service to get your Xo upto scratch :scratch: Thanks for the offer, I'm gong to have a little play with the Xo, I'm not messing with it, just getting to know the design etc. I will probably change the xo once I have a grasp of how it "sounds"

I'm sure much of this is worth pursuing, depending on how perfectionistic you want to be, but I'd say, listen to them first, if they sound fine, they probably are.

Check the crossover components, as you may find some showing signs of ageing and if any electrolytic caps are present it might be best to replace them.

The wiring will no doubt benefit from a modern replacement and the standard spring terminals are very poor.

I was fortunate in my recent Tannoy rebuild. I've left the crossovers standard (so far), as the components seem fine and the speakers sound bloody marvellous, so my thoughts are 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'!

+1 and with brass knobs on! As stated above I'm leaving them in stock form for a while till I get to know the "sound" of the Tannoy then the fun begins. And with regards the spring terminals, yep I couldnt agree with you more, they are quite naff!

Don't know if you noticed my description in my sale thread,i adapted some cotter pins as i wanted to keep the spring terminals on my Chatsworths,
took a pic of the spare one i did showing where i hack sawed it off,initially thought the whole pin would fit in but it doesn't, hit on the idea of sawing it off,
prised it open a bit to accept cable,crimp with priers and solder, works o.k.

Yep they arrived at 6pm tonight! I've included some porn, sorry pictures. They are f'kin big beasts!! Just a quick question. Look at the middle picture, is the port supposed to be closed off like that under the driver? Is a 3mm thick piece of plywood thats been screwed in, should it be removed?

Altering the plastic panel that houses the speaker terminals is a 'no no' with some Tannoy fans.

My inclination would be to leave the old terminals as is and drill two holes through the woodwork below the panel and fit a pair of 4mm banana sockets or posts there and wire/solder them to back of the existing spring terminals, at least until any major upgrades are attempted. A couple of small holes in a wood panel are much easier to fill and repaint than trying to restore a mucked about set of original terminals.
