View Full Version : Ad Attack

I don't mind the odd static ad on a webpage, it is de riguer these days but what really gets my goat are pop-ups, and just lately they are everywhere on AoS. I have a policy, if there are masses of pop-ups on a website I don't visit it again and I know many others who share that philosophy. If AoS wants to remain popular and relevant then I suggest that whatever changes have been made are reversed, and quickly. These ads still appear even though the pop-up blocker is activated on my browser and I absolutely refuse to download a third party app after a horrendous experience last year.

Here's a prime example, why the hell is the word 'download' highlighted in my post???

Here's a thought: If I had just discovered AoS today the sheer quantity of pop-ups would have put me off signing up... :steam:

Think you've got a problem there Dave . I don't get any pop ups at all when I'm on AOS . if I remember properly someone else here had this problem recently , Andre I think it was . One of the computer boffins on here was able to help him out . Good luck , there's nothing more annoying.

I've never had to use anything of the sort because until now I have not needed to.

Well I'm confused Dave, not a single pop up at all either here (home) or on my laptop at work when I logged in earlier today and I'm not running any software to block anything

Sounds like you may have some ad malware?

Well one thing does pop up occasionally but that's another story ;)

No pop ups here either - have you downlaoded / inadvertantly had a 'browser/helper' placed into your search engine?
Sounds like a bit of Spybot / Malware bytes action is needed.

Dave, you have some sort of Adware program installed, lots out there on 'tinternet' about this problem - its not AoS ;)

It's definitely not a 'feature' of AOS.

Hate to bring this up again, but on my brand spankin new install of Windows 8 Pro, upon first visit to the AoS, Windows warns me about "malicious code" that is being handled by Windows Defender.

Gentlemen, will you please skim through the code here and check if this is a false warning?

I wouldnt bother if it wasnt for the fact that the last malware attack via the AoS caused my PC to be infected with a trojan...

By no means is this an attemp to drag AoS in the mud, im trying to be helpful here!

Regards
/Mike

I have been through the code with a fine toothed comb and can find nothing untoward.

However, I am planning on upgrading us to the latest version of VB3.8 with all latest security patches. This will be done in the next couple of days.

Downtime will be required, which I will post about separately.

Firefox, and no pop ups.

Right ho my old muckers, I found the little fecker responsible for all the pop-ups. The culprit is a nasty little program called Selection Links. It must have come down the pipe when I was updating another program. Usually I am on the ball when dealing with such things but there has been a lot of shit going on recently and I probably let my guard slip... :eyebrows:

Glad you got to the bottom of it, Dave!

The other issue that Mike is referring to should be sorted once and for all when we upgrade the site's software, as Nick has outlined.

Wasn't there a news report on the BBC a week or two ago where it was noted that people could pick up advertising trojans etc when visiting porn sites?

That's where most issues come from Stan and many porn sites now hijack your web browser totally, opening things in the background some you may not wish or have asked for, with content that can get you in deep water! Best advice is stay away from porn unless you know how to control your PC and stop anything from being written to your hard drive, like using a virtual machine.

I won't even entertain porn mags let alone internet porn. If one is in a loving and stable relationship why would you need it?

Well take it from me, 'most' men (and a lot of women) look at porn at some time on a computer - nowt wrong with it if you take precautions :eyebrows:

Yesterday morning I was just out of the shower, and checking myself out in the mirror, as you do... (well, when you've lost a few pounds anyway!) I had heard a few banging noises but didn't think much of it, then turned around starkers, to see the window cleaner! As my wife said, "thank God you weren't doing something else..."

Don't you have opaque glass in the bathroom/shower room window? Or use net curtains (lilac or otherwise) for your bedroom windows?

No, Alex' window cleaner does the insides of the windows too......or at least that's what Alex has been told.......

Alex_UK
18-04-2013, 20:03
Well it was actually an arched window to the staircase/hall & landing - but a great line of site into the bedroom!

Ha, Chris - I see where you're going with that, but you're barking up the wrong tree - I do the insides of the windows, so I'm guessing the window cleaner must be in our bedroom to clean the mirror!
