View Full Version : compatible power amp
Hi, i am using a linn classik and am wondering if i could use a power amp other than linn via the pre outs? Any thoughts?
Thanks
Within reason you could use any power amp you wanted to. What were you thinking, valves?

Hi Karen
Pretty sure that shouldn't be a problem. IIRC, if you match the additional power amp, you could still use the power amp section of the Classik to bi-amp your speakers.

....as long as they have identical gain.
He's the spec from ftp://manual:packet@ftp.linn.co.uk/Manual/CLASSIK_MUSIC_original_(E).pdf
Preamplifier specification
Inputs TUNER/TAPE1/TAPE2/AUX, 318mV RMS (sensitivity), 10KΩ (load)
Outputs Tape output: equal to auxiliary input level (unity gain)
Output impedance: 100Ω Minimum load: 5KΩ
Line output Output impedance: 100Ω
Minimum load on line outputs: 1KΩ
Headphone Output impedance: < 8Ω
Output level: same as preamplifier output level
Output current limit: 60mA Load impedance: 8Ω to 2KΩ
Power amplifier specification
Input impedance 10KΩ
Voltage gain 28.5dB
Power output 75W per channel into 4Ω drivers (nominal mains)
I know the Linn power amps of the same vintage matched the voltage gain.

Chris, you just beat me to it ....:D

....as I would expect from an amp from th same manufacturer, but the question was about non-Linn power amps. If you want to plug one of those in and bi-amp, the gain must be matched - something to check.
Seriously, the LK140 is still a great little power amp, far beefier than the one in the Classik and works and sounds just fine. If the speakers are efficient, the LK85 ain't too bad either.....

Completely agree. IIRC, good rhythm, gutsy but not the last word in detail. Had two driving Linn ninka's active. Then moved to a 5250 using the same active boards for a modest improvement which is a complement to the lk140s. Still have the boards somewhere if it could help.
Thanks for all the reply's, i have tried linn amps and wasn't blown away, i want the classik for convenience ie pre amp/tuner/cd player in one, i am not looking to bi amp as my speakers have single wire inputs, just looking for a more detailed sound than the linn
Regards
If you want more detail you are better changing the loudspeakers.

Really? I am using AVI neutron 4 at the moment, what would you recommend same size/price?
