I know most of you are far too intellectual to watch them, but I thought I'd start a thread for the two or three of us that do... ;)
The Voice - 3 weeks in, and my goodness, there have been some really good auditions - well worth watching - stop being such a snob! ;)
Britain's Got Talent kicked off tonight - well, if the Hungarian Shadow Theatre aren't in the final, I'll eat my Rega Brio-R! Truly innovative, emotionally charged and ingeniously brilliant! Then we have an amazing singer - Alice - almost thwarted by stage fright, then blowing everyone away... stupendous!
I know they are staged and contrived, but really, if you ignore these shows - sneering indignantly down your nose because they are only for chavs like me - then you are the ones missing out. :)
Tut, tut, Alex, you should be tucked in a nice warm listening room like what I am, listening to some choons, not watching the telly :lol:
I wouldn't swap Chilling Matenda that I am listening to right now for any twaddle watching on the box :eyebrows:

That lass Alice was superb last night on BGT...nice looking too. Thankfully I rarely watch any tellly but like to catch some intersting programmes occasionally. Saturday night telly has been dire for many moons IMO.
I know I'm pissing in the wind with this thread, 'cos you're all insufferable snobs (;)) but The Voice continues to be fantastic... A real shame they are all so good, actually - makes it very hard to see some good talent dropped so early. Shaping up for some fantastic live shows. Which none of you will be watching anyway! :lol:

The good lady loves most of the music talent (arguable in some cases) shows so the voice is a regular watch.
Never surprised to see how the judges often make a mess of selecting their final threes :mental:
American Idol season 12 wasn't too bad when it got to the last five contestants; I did like the winner Candice Glover and hope she does well too :thumbsup:

I'm with you Alex although I have not caught BGT as yet. The standard of talent on display in The Voice this year is top notch. Matt Henry performing Skinny Love originally by Birdy nearly brought a tear to my eye, what a performance!!!

Won't disagree with you on the Matt Henry performance Dave, but being anal as I am - the Birdy version was in fact a cover of the Bon Iver original - all credit to them for writing it, of course. :)

In case you hadn't realised, choosing his singers is the "hardest thing" Tom Jones has ever had to do. At least since the last series.
My 8 yr old daughter is the only Voice fan in our house. Were it not for her telling that me it's a singing contest I'd have never known . . :rolleyes:

These talent shows give me the opportunity to re-acquaint myself with the 'upstairs' system, so I ain't knocking them!

Vocal gymnastics. How many voices and styles did she fit in there? I liked bits of it but cringed at other bits too cos the voice seemed so effected and put on. I couldn't possibly listen to an album of that. It's just too much.

I used to be a big Soap fan but have finally given them all up!! - Unless we're counting Casualty which my wife and like to watch of a Saturday evening!

I am in the fortunate position of having no access to British TV:)
As a Mac user with Flash disabled, I also have problems with YouTube. However, I do have a prog called MacTubes that allows me to dip in occasionally just see what the rest of the world has to suffer. I have, on occasion, been known to download some of the contents (usually classical but the occasional 'new to me stuff' like Xavier Rudd)
So I do see clips of The Voice and BGT. My problem with them is not the quality of the entrants voices, some of them are very good indeed.
I reckon all of them stand in front of a mirror, aping what they see in a DVD of what passes for singers these days. Its all angst, emote, grimace, wave the hands about impressively etc whilst performing vocal gymnastics of the painful kind. Its especially obvious with the young ones who are singing about stuff that hopefully, hasn't actually happened to them yet. Its all acting not singing, trying to impress rather than actually singing. The best singers can stand rock still and still move me.
The real problem, especially with BGT is that the judges appear to have no claim to any knowledge/taste/musical ability whatsoever. Tom Jones is actually a very good singer - I don't like much of his music but see him sing the blues with Van Morrison and his voice shines out. I have no opinion on the others as I have never heard them.
Clearly, both programs are not really aimed at most of the members of this forum (one hopes) but are fodder for.....someone else. On that score, they seem entertaining enough I guess.

I got to 1.41 before giving it up as a bad job. I like that song - but that was a travesty both in the arrangement and the performance. Just awful. Some may recall when the late Lynne Perry performed it on The Word - not sure if it is on U-Tube - it should be - she was so pissed she could hardly stand up and even sober she couldn't sing to save her life but it was still better than that diabolical massacre.

Actually, new Macs don't have flash installed, so its not a case of it being disabled. You can install it yourself from the Adobe Web site.
I have a safari plugin on my Mac called ClickToFlash. This stops flash content loading automatically, which reduces page load times. Then you can choose which flash content you'd like to see.
In the settings you can choose to convert flash to HTML5, so you could probably avoid installing flash altogether, but I haven't tested that.

Agreed she is amazing and I am not just saying that because she is from my neck of the woods. I like quirky female singer songwriters and she fits that bill to a T. Looking forward to hearing more from her and I suspect she might win the competition but the show this year has hit new heights in quality - puts the so called talent on BGT to shame in my view - so that isn't certain but I hope she does.

I think this girl has a great voice but the arrangement and 'over singing' is down to the pressure to impress and the coaching. - in this case Will I Am. It wouldn't have been much point just coming out doing Gloria Gaynor Disco though would it? Took me a about a minute to realise what song she was singing. Personally I think she over did it to put it mildly and would have been better sticking to one vocal style instead of the Maria Carey et all impersonations.

Anyway, it just illustrates how different we all are. I personally find the whole thing rather abhorrent and have real issues will the entire principle of what they are doing, both to the artists and music industry as a whole, be it X-Factor, BGT and this latest offering - its just plain wrong as far as I'm concerned.

I have an ancient G5 twin processor that still works beautifully and is quicker than my wife's Intel Mini. I disabled Flash on purpose because of the number of times it either crashed or slowed everything to a halt. I've tried Click to Flash but frankly, can't be bothered and there is very little out there that interests me enough to want it operating. MacTubes is extremely good for watching YouTube so that is enough for me.

I personally have a G5 iMac and a Intel iMac and on some websites find the G5 better.
Flash is an appalling program, I find it can lockup the entire machine be it a PC or an Apple Mac.
I remember reading somewhere that, hmm, I think it might have been Steve Jobs saying that they wouldn't install Flash on iOS (iPhones / iPad etc) devises because it consistently caused them to have problems and was the only thing that went wrong on a Mac, yes I am sure some of that statement was bravado, but he had a point!
I think Webby was referring to recent Intel based Mac's which don't come with Flash installed as default, but you have a choice to install it yourself if you want once you have the machine.

Well I took a leaf out of Gordon's book and just put Leah into YouTube for another dose of pain........... there are insufficient words in the English language to describe how shockingly dreadful she is. I had to stop all 3 of the videos and the longest I could stomach was 22 seconds. I'm scratching my head with confusion now, trying to work out how any of you guys can think she's talented - this is utter shite of the highest order :lol:

Well I am shocked Andrea is a nice girl, with a nice tone but her diction, pronunciation was poor. Not much point in singing if you can't make out what is being sung about - imho of course.

Its too easy to forget about catch up TV and I player etc, that others watch that way. Not saying I don't but my indignation at what I considered was the best artist/voice loosing overrode my taking your situation into account . Once again sorry.
Do watch the show though Alex, Leah's track with Will I am was very good imho.

For what it's worth, I think Leah has a very 'interesting' voice, which I'm sure Will I Am will be making the most of in the years to come. Her voice came into play in her 'duet' with Will but I couldn't stand the way she mangled all of the normal songs she has sung throughout the series.
The best by far for me was Jessie J's man ( can't recall his name). He had real talent which I could listen to, whereas the others were just amateurs. I always use the yardstick of 'would I buy an album from' and he was the only possible for me.

If you mean Mike Ward, I agree (don't know if he was Jessie J's man!!). After wincing at Leah, I had a look at a few others and actually downloaded one of his songs to keep. Now that doesn't happen very often!! No messing about with the acting artistic and showing how meaningful it all is, just actually singing, rather well. A bit rare these days.
