Hello,

I'm interested in modding my 640P and was hoping someone on this forum could help me. From what I've read Hypnotoad appears to be the person to talk to. Does anyone know if he is still working on this phono pre?

Hi Colin,

Welcome to AoS :)

A proper introduction first would be nice! What system do you have and music do you like?

Marco.

my system consists of the below

technics 1210(turntable)
denon110(cartridge)
cambridge 640p(phono pre)
marantz sr7002 (receiver)
b&w 602s3 (speakers)

i mostly listen to jazz and rock on vinyl, but have been feeling like the sound is somewhat compressed compared to cd/apple tv streaming

my guess is the phono pre is to blame. not sure though.

i was also considering adding a power amp and running a pair of mmg or martin logan esl speakers, however, when i went to audition the esl, they sounded very thin. this was at best buy so i'm sure the set up was not ideal. but it did not sound as good as i expected.

please share you thoughts/suggestions to better sound.

thanks!

I was also wondering if you guys think i'll run into any issues running Magnepan MMGs off my Marantz sr7002? Any issues with heat?

Not technically rated for 4 ohm operation but the guy at Marantz said it should be ok

The Marantz looks a hell of a beast and it will probably work but may not get the best from the Maggies. I would be looking for more grunt myself, especially in view of the current draw.

The Arkless mod is the way to go - you will have a stage close to £800/£1000 retail.
