The very kind Stratmangler has helped me numerous times re the tiny SC being too puny to run Squeeze server on its own, trouble is I am not the most technical guy in the world, but do appreciate that a separate laptop would end my tales of woe of the Touch shutting down and restarting about 60% of the time that I'm listening.

I do already have one laptop set up to control the touch, but cant get my head around what I'm supposed to do with it as far as it being used as a server, yes, I'm stupid I know! If I select it as the source for the Touch, then I can't seem to use my iPad with

Please help a simpleton!

Connect your laptop to your home network, you can use wireless or wired. Install Logitech Media Server (LMS), configure it so it knows where your music library resides...IE on the C drive or maybe an external USB drive...it will need to scan the library. Now, make sure LMS is up and running....

...Fire up your squeezebox, maybe perform a factory reset and setup the Networking for your home network, the Touch should auto find your install of LMS on the laptop...sit back and play.

Once you have followed Neal's instructions and have the laptop working as server you're then ready to get the iPad access working.

First of all you need to know the IP address of the laptop - you can find this by going to the network and sharing section and digging around.

When you have the IP address take note of it and add :9000 to the end of it.
On the iPad open up Safari and enter http://192.168.xxx.xxx:9000 and you should be able to access LMS to drive things.

Pretty sure I've done all that, but total control of the Touch gets done by the lappy.......posted before I saw Strats reply......

I find the :9000 interface a little awkward to use on the iPad so I would recommend this:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Logitech_Squeezebox_Controller_App

or iPeng but you have to pay for it..

Got LMS installed, different now to the older one, and its picked up all the stuff that I see on the touch, but how do I tell it my music is stored on a hard drive directly attached to the Touch?

From memory, look in the library section in LMS and browse to point it at the hard drive.

EDIT not sure you can run it that way?

Think you need to connect your drive to the network, not through the Touch, or it will take forever to do anything.

The drive has USB but the router only has Ethernet sockets.......

Connect it to the laptop and find it on the network. Maybe look at getting a NAS so you can connect it to the router.

Will do, but that means a bit of a task involving shifting a few bits of kit, so if we might take this up again tomorrow evening?

I did have a NAS, but it was for the Windows system a few model changes ago.

Just a quickie as I'm at work, when I attach the HD to the lappy will I need to have the laptop always powered up whenever I use the Touch?

If the SB can't see a server, it will try to connect to the Internet via your SB account for Internet radio etc.

You'll need to re attach it to your local server (in this case laptop) in order to see your local files on the HDD

Enable wake on LAN for the network port u r using on the laptop. Set the port to be able to wake this machine up. Then u can set the power options for the PC to sleep it after a period of inactivity. The WOL packet will be sent from the touch when it's powered on bringing the server out of sleep mode.

The Zyxel NS310 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zyxel-NSA310-Network-Multimedia-Server-Without-Hard-Drive-eSATA-USB-/380612384338?pt=UK_Computing_Home_Network_Storage_ NAS_2&hash=item589e441652) is supposed to be LMS compatible. You just need to add a suitable hard disk.

There's no supposed about it - it does run LMS, and it is loaded onto the NSA310 from the Zyxel website (ie. it's an easy and supported installation to perform).
I've had one running for a good while now, and it's been faultless.

The NSA310 does not have the processing grunt to resample files on the fly, so it does deliver the files in their raw format - if the player can't handle them (eg. SB3 with 24/96) then the files don't play.
That said it can deliver up to 24/192 direct to the Squeezebox Touch, and with EDO installed on the Touch and a 24/192 capable DAC hanging off the back of it things run without error.

LMS installed, music playing through lappy after re scan and reset of touch, typed in 192 168 etc but the result doesnt bring up anything like it should.
I remember last time we tried you then recalled that something slightly different had to be done.....?

CANCEL THAT

Just opened the Touch and didnt need to put the 192 168 number in for it to work.

Thanks guys.....have I now said goodbye to the Touch shutting down and restarting numerous times?

Provided that you operate everything from your local server then you should have most of the wrinkles ironed out.

I suggest that you install the BBC iPlayer plugin, and also the Spotify plugin, as neither are included by default.

Did have them, I'll check if I still do, and reinstall if not.

You need to look in LMS on the laptop - the stuff on the 'net is not the same.

icehockeyboy

Done it!

Is there a reason why things like BBC iPlayer don't show on the iPad but do on a laptop?
Yes it's there in a different app, but not in the Squeezebox one.....

Quick query...why am I not getting the artwork appearing now, either on the Touch or the laptop.

BBC iPlayer displays ok, as do radio station logo's, but no pics via Spotify....have I missed doing something?

Update that........my own albums stored in the hard drive all display properly. ......

Stratmangler

Pics come up OK with Spotify here, and access is direct from my local server.
Have you got a Spotify logo showing under "My Apps" on the laptop?

UV101
11-04-2013, 19:13
I get this too. I think it depends if you are accessing spotify directly from the app on the touch or via your local server.

I've never managed to put my finger on it!

Note the IP address - this is where the device running LMS resides on my network

Hmmmmm.....it's weird because its only anything via Spotify where I'm not getting album artwork, surely that means its all set up properly?

icehockeyboy

When I take the lappy out of the equation, all the artwork is visible......

Which antivirus/firewall software you using?

icehockeyboy

7.7.2

And AVG.

Stratmangler

7.7.2

And AVG.

Is it the full AVG security suite?
There's a possibility of a firewall issue.

No, just the free version.

Stratmangler
13-04-2013, 10:28
There might still be a firewall issue.
Which version of Windows?

I've just got LMS 7.7.2 running on the desktop machine at home (Win7 64bit), and Spotify is working fine.
I did have to go to the settings/plugins section and install the Spotify 3rd party app by Triode.

What colour is the Spotify icon in your setup?
If it's green it's the wrong plugin.

Sounds like you've also got Windows firewall in place, so you'll need to grant access permissions if asked for.

Get rid of it and get Microsoft Security Essentials, which is also free. AVG seemed to take too many resources when I used it.

I've got MSE on my laptops (one with XP Pro, t'other with Win7), and it's fine.
The desktop I'm sat at currently has the free version of Avast on it, which is also fine.

Last time I used AVG it hogged the machine so I got rid.

icehockeyboy
14-04-2013, 09:36
Sorry about the lateness of the reply, I was working yesterday.

I will address the AVG issue, although a guy who's a bit clever at this sort of stuff said the opposite of what Canetoad said........ and indeed Strat!

As for Spotify, there are both orange and green versions in my plugins, so I have removed the Logitech version.

One other problem I have, and recall being a regular pain in the arse is often when I want to access the Touch via the laptop, it tries to go via an IP address that starts 127 and not 192, tell me how to sort this please? :)

Stratmangler
14-04-2013, 09:54
Sounds right about the unticking thing.
I'm on route to Wembley, so I'll only be popping in here occasionally today.

Thanks Chris!
Just to re address the current problem......when I try and use Touch on the laptop, it tries to go to a different IP address, and as a consequence, won't fire up!
