When to buy an album?

How good does an album have to be before you actually decide to purchase it...:scratch:

Normally I have listen to it first on youtube or spotify and decide if I would actually listen to it more than once or twice before spending £15 - £30+ for the vinyl version.

Sometimes I will see one in a shop and be aware of only a track or two but because I like the artist already I will take a chance and hope that they haven't gone compleatly off the rails. Neil Young's 1980/88 years spring to mind...:doh:

I have even been known to be seduced by a cover but to be honest with the price of vinyl these days that happens very seldom.

Recomendations are always a spurious affair as one persons Floyd is anothers Bucks fizz so generally I will at least attempt to grab a quick sound bite first.

The annoying one and I think this applies to vinyl more than CD these days is when you see something that is very limited, you have it in your hand and your heart is thumping you know full well if you don't buy it there and then it will be gone by the time you return and you will be reduced to bidding for it on fleabay. But you haven't heard it yet and to make matters worse the damned thing costs £36...!!! Oh the pain the pain. I have lost a few like this and also ended up with some turkeys as well.

I suppose it's all part of the fun...:)

Or you buy it based on the artists previous releases, only to discover its not a patch on the last one! Bonobo's 'The North Shores' is a prime recent example for me :-(

Done that loads of times. There are some artists I have to buy every new release even if they are just treading water. Always in hope there will be the odd gem of a track.

Complicated: I used to buy on reviews or recommendations, but now listen first on Spotify. If it's an artist or band I really like, I'll buy it anyway.

As to the format: always SACD or CD for classical. LP if the music is of a certain type (highly dynamic is my preference) and with a voucher for mp3s or a CD if possible (for the car), otherwise SACD or CD.

Um dunno i can't see me buying anything new i don't know about already..Just a matter of going down the list & ticking off titles replacing what i have on CDee for fuzzies.

There are also the other albums. The ones you are initially unimpressed with but grow on you. How could you find those without buying them and listening to them.

Yes exactly - and they often turn out to be your all-time favourites.

Personally I don't buy much new stuff so it's not an issue for me. I'll take a punt unheard if I know the artist already. There is no way I would pay £25 for a new vinyl release without hearing it first, though. £25 is serious money.

I bought a Wayne Shorter album last week on blue note. It was only when I did some research that I discovered that the DMM 1986 copy I bought was apparently the worse release of this album ever...!!!

That said I listened to it twice tonight and to be honest it was very enjoyable so no complaints thus far.
