Having a rummage, I've just unearthed two brand new (old stock) ADC 27 styli. I own a 26, 10E Mk.II, 10E Mk.IV. Do these bodies work OK with the 27 styli or would there be compatability issues? I haven't tried this yet.

I see no issues! i think id rather use the '27' with the Mission '774' of yours. I was having issues with the '26' on the Mayware arm

The 27 should work well with the 10E IV and 25/26 bodies at least, and probably others in the 900 series for all I know. I ought to try one while they're fairly cheap as I think compliance may be reduced over the previous models? Any ideas Andr'e?

Hmm. Just had a look on 'vinylengine', the 27 seem to fall between the 10E Mk. IV and the 26 compliance wise at 40x10-6cm/Dyne. The others rated at 35 and 50 respectively. The 27 stylus is going to need a light arm. The 774 should do. I'll give it a whirl this week.

Well the Mayware was slightly lower mass than the '774' i was detecting a slight distortion with the '26'..Anyhoots the cantilever just collapsed, swaped the styli for a new still the same so slung the bloody cart body, sold the arm out of temper :steam: , so knows this may have been the issue.

From then on *NEVER EVER WILL I MESS ABOUT WITH SPECIALIST HI-FI*.

Andr'e, WHY didn't you offer the cartridge remains to me????? I have a "thing" with vintage ADC's and sometimes I can get 'em going again.............

What colour is the 27 suspension? The 25/26 and first two XLM models had a black colour. The "improved" models then went an orangey-brown which offered more control and better tracking and then finished up in the XLM/ZLM "Improved" models a green coloured compound, which I believe to be the best of them all. The rough pics on Bluz-bros' site looks as if the compound could be the oranhey-brown coloured one...

Hi Dave
The new Styli was just the same it was obviously a problem with the cart body in which you wont have been able to sort it cos i couldnt, anyway it all went in the dustbin weeks ago, good riddence. The arm went on Auction, another good riddence..

tbh Dave i get more satisfaction from cheap 70's japanese gear than i ever did with pain in the arse specialised equipment. I don't give two rats arses what people think..Ive had it upto the back teeth with equipment over the years..

Now the reason i junked vinyl in the first place is steadlily dawning on me again but im stuck with it this time, over my dead body will i ever go back to CD regardless of how pathetic most the re-issued vinyl are these days :steam: It's a wonder i aint around the bend by now, really is..Cos now the turntables acting up i gotta sort that out :steam:

OK :) I love my later ADC's and have a couple of rather nice Phase IV's that get cycled round every so often :) I just couldn't get my 26 to track high frequencies, 1980's pressings did seem a bit hotter in level and bass/hf content and the poor 26 couldn't cope at all, with either stylus. I haven't tried the XLM mk1 in recent times, but I suspect it'll be the same...

Andr'e, I think you'll just have to go back to using a big 'reel to reel' tape deck. Trouble is the pre-recorded stuff is a bit thin on the ground.

Is the 220 XE anything special?

No.

I bought one new years ago when they were still being made. It was pleasant enough, but it had nowhere near the resolution and transparency of the 10E Mk.IV I was using at the time. Unlike many ADCs, it will work in most arms though, as it is of moderate compliance. I don't know, but it may also accept higher grade ADC styli. The body looks similar to the dearer models.
