Might be of interest to some?

Nice price too!!!!

I guess I'm a little spoiled as I can do most of it myself but still.....a grand for a psu with a couple of shunt regs :stalks::eek::rolleyes:

Well i only posted the link to see if we could get more debate on PSU, the more info we have the better as far as I'm concerned. It enables me to further understand whats going on under the hood of my 1210, and, possibly may lead to areas of further improvement. :eyebrows:

Not just any transistor, this is a field effect transistor. (with ref to M&S)

Definitely wasn't a dig Andrew ;)

Indeed, the more in this arena the merrier.

I'm sure it will be excellent as I suspect the clever bits were tuned by Alex who I have much respect for (which reminds me I need to finish the Kora phono stage I'm building).

Fets are great output devices for regs ;);)

It seems a lot of money for a power supply, but maybe not as bad as Naim getting away with charging £1500 for the Armegeddon.

£1050 apparently!

Just for a bit of fun I had a look on the Naim website ...

"The Armageddon is a turntable power supply for the Linn Sondek LP12. It is built around a large 430VA toroidal transformer. Simplicity is the key to its uniquely musical sound."

Blimey - for £1050 I thought they might like to "sell" it a bit more ...
Maybe that's all there is to say about it.

Dingdong
04-04-2013, 22:07
oops, got my prices wrong. There is more than just a transformer. But not much more. And it's in a nice box. If you like that sort of thing.

Good luck to Timestep if they can get away with charging a grand for their psu. I hope it offers an upgrade in performance over their cheaper one.

"The Timestep HE II PSU addresses nearly every issue with the SL-1200 PSU. With it's ultra low noise and instantaneous 60A peak power capability it should be good enough for anyone. For most people it is more than enough, but for the very few who insist on the best at any cost, then the T-01PSU is for them."

That's current delivery you bell end power is measured in watts.

"Shunt regulators are somewhat magical. And this one is no exception as it uses no transistors at all, just FET's. The advantage of this Shunt PSU is that as the motor current varies, the current taken by the PSU stays constant, and hence does not reflect via the mains cable into modulation of other devices.

Yes magical indeed, as FET's are transistors.

What pisses me off is that the magazines have swallowed DC's claims to have designed these - especially as he doesn't know an FET is a transistor. It does appear Alex Nikitin may have had a hand in this design and the new Timestep MC phono stage. I see that David Price's review in Hi-fi choice for the phono stage is an unfortunate toadying up to DC whether by intention or not.

Having lived happily with a Timestep HE II psu without complaint since January 2011 in constance daily use from that date with no problems, I have placed an order last week for the new Timestep psu. Yes its expensive but I have been given a good trade in price for my HE supply thus cushioning the overall cost of the new supply. Whilst my new supply is on order I am keeping the HE psu till receipt of the new one, I personally can't fault this arrangement with the manufacturer. All told, my outlay will not be more than the overall cost of the top flight psu often mentioned here, I'm just staying with more of what I have happily lived with for over two years, the choice is mine and money comes from my wallet :).

I don't think I'd be wanting to buy anything that has been partially designed with so little understanding of electronics. I find it shocking that anybody could write such stuff.

Sorry if it's turning into a bash Timestep thread. I'm sure it's a half decent psu. How much do the competition charge for their top offerings?

Hi ya Mark, I certainly hope its not going that way and a very close watch is kept to make sure this isn't the case! As to the man in question's capabilities, or lack thereof, I have not seen any positive proof, documented as such, that Cawley is not very much involved in all aspects of his product manufacture. It would be fool hardy to go into print stating a falsehood and risk censorship and possible court action would it not?

As to what other manufacturers of PSU for the techy, you will have to do your own search on this one but keep in mind that some will probably require a high level of electronics know how and ability to to the job other wise you will have to factor in the cost of a qualified third party to do the job for you thus adding to total cost. :)

I was just wondering out loud about the competition to the new Timestep psu. I fitted an SR3 from Paul Hynes to a 1210 not long ago. I thought it was pretty good, but I haven't compared it to anything else yet.

I don't know if DC is competent or not. I'm sure his products work fine as he obviously has 3rd part help in designing them. Ron, I think you should check the prices of competing power supplies before committing. Until someone does a comparison we are obviously in the dark as to where this fits in. I'm sure David Price will give it five stars when he gets it as he does for all Dave's products. :eyebrows:

My view is once you get to these prices for Technics mods things are getting excessive. You likely need all the other expensive platter/bearing upgrades to gain benefit from this PS even if it justifies the price. If you are going to end up spending thousands a thorough listen to a number of good alternatives is essential. This PS is nearly half the cost of an Orbe or NA Hyperspace to put it into perspective.

What would £1k spent with Mr Hynes get you, considerably more than Dave's POS I'd warrant.

Thats just it Mark, its really impossible to compare ALL psu for the techy so one is on a hiding to nowhere on this one. I think Neil in N.Ireland had a go but gave up because of the difficulty involved in hearing/auditioning ALL psu available at the time.

I did have an exchange of emails with someone in Europe who traded out his TS psu for a PH SR5 and he told me that he could hear no difference so that is the only comparison I'm aware of. Paul Hynes does indeed make good psu for the Techy as vouched for on AoS but to discount others is not for me :) I would would say that if you are happy with what you have why change?

Hi there Paul and thanks for your response and advice. I have been upgrading my 1210Mk2 since October 2010 and over a period spread of time the deck has had an inplant of Mike New bearing, Mike new base plate with 11 bolt fixing and gasketing plus damping to main body pan, ebony armboard, swapping a AO silver wired Ekos and AO Jelco 750D tonearms in and out of use. Cartridges used are Koetsu Black, AT33EV, AT09Mk2. I've also had Isnoe feet, changed to Origin Live feet all sat on a Townshend Seismic bellows base on Origin Live Ultra three legged table. By Jimminy and struth, I've spent big buck on this record spinning babe of mine so there is no going back. The TS HE2 worked very well with this lot and Mike New admitted to me that he used the same HEpsu in his workshop testbed. I also have a modified (subchassis, rebuilt by me) Linn LP12 with Linn Ittok Mk2B which also allows me to use the other arms as and when desired so I've got a reasonable handle on these two decks plus having been a Saturday and when required oldboy at a high end Hi Fi business and as a consequence have a good working knowledge of tables such as NAS (very good!), All Regas, Mitchell decks etc. As I have said the/my Techy is my last TT liked not only for its performance but also ease of use and compact dimensions and not having to frig around with adjustments all the time

Don't forget that David Price probably does not have much to do with the Techy since moving over to HFC (no longer editor ?), by the way it was Stuart Wennem (?) who kicked off my interest in the 1200Mk2 way before DP. Don't discount Rafael Todes (serious musician) input.

As regards price of such things, which is really what the main bugbear seems to be, exactly how many of these things is Timestep going to sell worldwide - a hundred tops?

The main Techie tweakers seem to post here, so we tend to (in my personal opinion) get a blinkered view of exactly how many *seriously* modded Techies there are out there in the world. I don't just mean the odd mat, feet and KAB damper, but wholesale bearing, platter and power supply modders.

I was already politely put in my place when I questioned Paul Hynes' prices for his power supplies, since I "only" really looked at material costs. People have to make a living and of course, if you've put many design hours in, there's the intellectual-property issue too. If Timestep have had to employ an external designer to do the job, lay out the board etc and custom cases having to be screen printed in small numbers (tens rather than hundreds, let alone thousands I'll bet), then in fairness, a grand for such a device looks about right, much as we'd like it to be less.

I'm not trying to take anyone's side here, but Timestep aren't made in China by the tens of thousands for pennies a pop, as many bits of audio gear are, especially computer-audio add-ons like USB DACs for example, the best all-in-one-plastic-moulding jobbies going for a huge £200 or so just 'cos they have a "name" on and have third party distribution (no offence but I bet it's true).

Proof of t'pudding will be in the using of it, and I hope Ron and others hear an improvement over the previous units they've had.

Ron. Thought DP was editor at Choice or have things changed ? I see you've gone well beyond sensible expenditure already so I suppose what's another £1K if you like what you've got. I suppose the value of this PS is relative to what else is available. I know there is a bias against Cawley on this forum which is more to do with personalities and his dealings with Mike New than anything else. He did kick of the Technics mods in this country as far as I can tell.

Well I still am :eyebrows: and have up to an extent done some work on this already.

The sudden death of my Dad mean't I shelved/suspended much of what I was working on from Nov last year but the brighter days and a brighter mood means I am restarting the reviews I had on hold, including the psus.

Was I finding some aspects of this frustrating? Yes, in particular Timestep refusing to allow me any official scope to review their products, including their psus. I wanted and still do want the review to be open and fair and as such I very much wanted Timestep involved - still do - but my previous role as a mod here (I haven't been for quite awhile) was seen by DC as a permanent block to me ever reviewing any Timestep products - something I do consider a loss re the Technics articles. Regardless of what DC might think of my involvement with AOS either as an ordinary member now or as a mod in the past, I would and still will be totally fair and honest in all I write based on what I hear and only on what I hear.

However as I bought a number of Timestep items with my own money I will be including them in the review.

However I will say this at the time last year I started comparisons and listening I did compare the basic Timestep psu to a few other psus (similar price point) and they right royally outperformed it in the context of that set-up (this previously written text will form part of the review when its eventually finished and published) and while Timestep no longer sell the basic psu (The HE is the only one on their books now and that will be mentioned in the interest of fairness) there are no doubt a fair number of basic ones potentially kicking around S/H so my findings are still relevant I feel and should thus be included in the overall article.

If anyone has a spare HE psu being able to include it would be great, so please if you do pm me re organising a loan of it.

I haven't compared the SR5 ( I do have one here bought with my own cash) to an SR3 or any of the other PSUs I have here yet but I can say in my system and a system elsewhere there were marked differences in performance between the various PSUs and much seems to depend on what 1200/1210 turntable set up you have re synergy. I don't want to say much more because I want to compare more to be somewhat more definitive as that comment is a tentative one still.

Obviously this article can't be totally definitive as I don't have access to every Technics PSU out there but it will still be a useful article - even though its long in the doing.

I have two reviews to finish, a DAC review (nearly done) and an interconnect review and then I will continue the Technics review. I realise I am way late on this but its only now I feel really fully up to doing any reviewing.

Regards Neil

Looks like he made a bad move. Wonder if NK will have him back. I don't think anyone is going to be able to change HFC from it's moribond format. Perhaps sales are plummeting.

Hi Folks,
Having read the posts on this thread carefully I would like to make just a couple of observations. Firstly Ron, I only use the Timestep power supply on my test bed SL to spin bearings and to test platter dynamics it does not even have a tone arm fitted.
I use the PH modules on my personal unit.

More importantly should we not consider that all we are getting is 1K worth of 21V DC to feed into the basic input of the control circuit. (I presume that is where it goes ) Which will do very little to improve the performance of the circuits down stream from this.

Some of you may remember that I first suggested that the power supply could be distributed between the various voltages to great advantage, some time ago (nearly 2 years?)
And it was PH who then took up the challenge with the design of his modules. The problem here is that it does require some mods to the PCB which must be made carefully.

From the point of view of absolute purity of design this is the only way to go.
Anything else IMO is second option, especially when we are talking 1,000 pounds!!
To be brutally honest I did not experience a noticeable difference when using the raw input of the PH 21V. However there seemed to be a distinct improvement when I hooked up the on-board modules. These tests were done on the modified SL, which I supplied to a New Zealand customer for record cutting, so I was using the standard tone arm not my SME.

And incidentally an FET by definition is a transistor.
In fact all solid state devices make use of the transister effect in one way or another as semi-conductors. Maybe Cawley has invented another device of his own.

I too have gone down the multiple voltage regulator path using PH modules. It takes performance to a new high but is a tricky install (which I illustrated in a thread started by Leo). That way, the huge external SR7 PSU is fully justified.

Yep I did this as well and blow my boards ( silly bugger that I am) anyway to get back on thread. It took the recommended three moths for the mods to fully bed down. I also had my pcb recapped which I think is something that the others have not had done  the bass is astonishing it completely wipes the floor of my fully restored garrard 301 (which is supposed to very prodigious in that area) a quick play of Steve wilsons opening track to his new album will testify to that statement.:eyebrows: I firmly believe that's psu on its own will bring improvement but regulated power supplies to discrete areas of the pcb really make the 1210 shine. :D

Mike, I thought I put it clearly in my post that you ONLY used the TS PSU in your workshop test bench. I took it as granted that readers would see this as being so and that it was used to trial both your bearings and your platters as you had this unit prior to the your PH unit.. incidently, I use all of your techy uprades with the exception of your copper arm board. I am fully aware that you use a PH psu for your personal listening and this is more than okay for me. Please do not in anyway think I am trying to scratch at old wounds and if I have upset you then I apologise without reservations and on bended knee if required, don't forget I'm old and my bones now creek and don't always obey brain to body commands :D

May I respectfully take this opportunity to suggest that you have provision on your website for customers to endorse products and/or make any worthwhile contributions, I'm sure there are many on here who would contribute thus telling the world about you, your service and the validity of your products?

Cheers :)
Ron

I really don't know Paul  but having both DP and our own Beobloke walk away from HFW more or less within days of one another makes one wonder if there was some almighty internal disagreement, anyone here got any insider info???

As to the mags themselves, I think they are loosing the battle for hearts and HiFi minds as the audio world changes to downloads, wonder phones and tablets that are impossible to swallow, have you noticed how everyone is walking around looking at the palm of there hand, wiggling their thumbs and bumping into other people or seemingly talking to themselves oblivious to the fact that a titchy little alien is perched on one ear?. I do think we should have stuck with the 1980s brick mobile. 35minute talk time and a ten hour battery charging time I do mourn the demise of the DIY supplement that HFW once published I enjoyed these, but I'm rambling now and my socks stink so off for a foot spa and tincture ;)

Don't you go upsetting your better half Ron ;) Hope she's well and still able to deal with you

Dave, she's totally unaware of my knaveries activities here on AoS but I do love the wench

Ron,
I sincerely appologise and prostrate myself before you for forgiveness (and all that rubbish) I only made the comment because people may have thought that I used the TS PSU for listening tests on my test bed SL.
Not sure what you mean by old wounds though.

To amplify the comments on this thread, regarding Power supplies.
I really do not believe that it is terribly important how many giga watts of power the external PS can provide. What matters most in this exercise is that you are removing the source of electrical and mechanical inteference`from within the SL when you fit an external unit.

In the case of the PH unit and the voltage module upgrades, then a good quality primary DC supply is important as the starting point. and you need to pay for this.
If you are not going down this road then I can see no practical, certainly no noticeable sonic reason, why you would spend 1,000 pounds on a PS.
To be honest the units supplied by KAB (I have one) and others, do all that is required IMO. including the TS unit.

I cannot see why TS would have come out with this very heavy current PS with no upgrade path to the improvement of voltage distribution within the PCB where it really matters. Maybe they intend to do this later.

In summing up for the newer people to AoS, as many others have stated here: The two single major sonic improvements to the SL are to fit an external PS (or externalise the existing unit) and to fit a high quality Bearing.
From then on the incremental improvements, (Arm Board, Tone Arm, an ETP Platter, better feet) can be fitted and assessed on their merits.

Your idea about interacting with my WebSite is a good one and I will get Richard to look at this, if only I can get to talk to him. He does not always promptly answer emails.
