Hi chaps and Chappies

I am expecting del of Sony Experia Z this week in replace of my iPhone4...(the latter can go to hell as far as I am concerned)

This was the little bit in the techSpecs that sold it to me

MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV player
MP3/eAAC+/WMA/WAV/Flac player

Note the FLAC support without having to stay with Apple.

I will be doing a few tests with this over the next few weeks.

QED 3.5 to 2 channel stereo lead from phone to Standac
same without standac straight to amp
Headphones (Panasonic)

Fwiw I have an experia phone too and I'm sorry to say the headphone out on it is as flat as a witches tit...

Having come from Sony with all their walkman experience and despite being a very capable multimedia device it was a real disappointment.... This was even with my AKGs which are pretty forgiving. Its passable I suppose but my iPod classic sounds a hundred times better with 320k mp3. Battery life on this phone could be better too I guess.

My Nokia 808 has the best sounding headphone output of any phone I have ever heard. I only use it with mp3 files though. I have no idea if it supports any other audio formats.

for portable use or in the home the AK100 astell & kern is superb Graeme. if you want to try or borrow one , just up the M8 from you

Don't know if this (http://www.gspaudio.co.uk/bitzie-usb-dac-external-soundcard.htm) works with any Android phone, but it can always be trialled at home . . .

I've got FLACs out of an iPad with it. :)

Poweramp gives FLAC support and library capabilities on all Android phones...at the massive cost of £3 ;)

Oh and full ReplayGain implementation, including a pre-amp waiting...

...the FLAC library (artists/albums/genres etc.) capability is very good, with other players you have to be meticulous with your file structures.

I started a thread a while ago about FLAC players for android...

...there's also some instructions about how to upgrade to a larger micro SD card, when I eventually got a genuine one that is :steam:

Thanks for that. I shall give the WAV option a try.

The Gator is in stock now. I just need to complete the installation instructions in the support page and add it in the Shop page :). Should be ready over the weekend.

It's all about software isn't it?

Ignore what the phone specs say, a smartphone is a pocket computer and relatively limitless in scope. Any phone OS that is popular enough will have software around to play all formats.

My Nokia N900 (from 2009) is the best sounding I've heard, better than my ipod touch for example and other people's iphone 4s. I'm sure there are better sounding phones out there of course, probably many these days with better Codec chips being cheaper.

Anyway, free software was available to play all formats not long after it came out and it's 3.5 years old.

I use VLC on the HTC android.......plays everything though I only use flac.

I've been using PowerAmp across at least 5 Android devices over the last few years. It's great.

The one caveat I have found is that playback of 24/96 FLACs are fine until I enable the tone controls (or EQ) and then I get a click about 4 times a seconds especially on silent parts - but I have only noticed this on my Samsung devices (Note II and Note 10.1). Otherwise all is good.

Well worth the money.
