Baby came home...

As some might remember my near disaster purchase of a pair of Altec 604 speakers last year, weeks after the debacle i noticed a pair of Urei 809's on the bay,
seller accepted my offer(unsold 1st time round), lets just say i got it for half of what these normally sell for and way cheaper than what he listed them for 1st time round. :)

Heartache ~ on receiving it only to find Courier has dropped one box and the huge magnet moved and grabbed the voice coil rendering the cone unmovable, :(
managed to find pro shop who originally re-foamed the drivers in London to effect repair, forward 6 months..........

Euphoria ~ My baby came home this morning and i immediately tore the box open, hoovered my babies 1.5'inch throat/magnet assembly (took it off to keep postage down)
reattached to main chassis, fired her up for the very 1st time with bated breath, she came to life and singing away since this morning. :cool:

Jjust wanted someone to share my joy, nice to have a pair of nearfield monitors, all my other speakers are room fillers. :D

Went to food shop since my initial post and left them toasting with Radio2,
still working, phew !!!. :eyebrows:

Early days yet comparing them to Tannoys, lets just say they have loosened up already, rocked out with The Division Bell earlier,
then R2 and now ''Everything All The Time'' (Band of Horses), 'Funeral' is belting out just now and loving the big,open,smooth sound,
i'll experiment more later when i dig out my proper speaker stands and we'll,very good just plombed down on cheap stools just now.

P.S. It's amazing i've bought/tried/repaired/sold on a pair of Ditton 44's while waiting for these, speakers just give me the Hornies. :D

Tried them parked sideways on my super heavy Acoustic Energy AE2 stands but too unsteady, so abandoned that idea,
at the moment they are upside down :scratch:

They look like fun. Not a model I know, but I've heard quite a few of the big Altecs and always liked the effortless sound of those.

To be honest, knowing these are heading back to me was the only reason i didn't hit the buy button when you placed your Eaton's for sale,
agree they are great fun, very good so far at the end of my Meridian's.

think it's a good choice for British living rooms, American size homes will probably benefit the 811 and 813's.

Can't wait to get up and fire her up, :D they are sounding rather splendid,big, detail, smooth (not sugar coated),
involving, meaty warm but not the fastest bass around but live music don't tend to have tight bass anyway, least of my priorities,
i don't know why some from across the pond marry it with a sub woofer, in my set up, it doesn't need any help down there.

just lovely, perfect tone and hear through every brushstroke of acoustics, brassy, toe tapping pitch perfect tempo,
swing when it needs to and real smoky jazz club feel, great fun i do like these.....a lot. :)
