View Full Version : Car Insurance

For the first time in longer than I can remember, my quote for insurance renewal has gone down substantially. The car's the same (BMW 335d M-Sport Coupe, group 41 insurance), I haven't moved house, my NCD is on 9 years, the car is not garaged. The only thing that's changed is that I got older

The new quote from Chaucer Direct has come in at £459 fully comp, with improved benefits such as legal cover, Europe cover, hire car etc. I consider this to be very good in view of the car's performance and value. Not so long ago I was paying close to £800.

Has anyone else seen a downward move recently, or is this my age talking?

Yes, the insurance for my oil burning Lexus is only about £270 this year. £60 returned eventually through Topcashback.

Yes, about 25% cheaper for me Martin - I assumed it was because the car is getting older - I refuse to accept I ever do!

Is that fully comp, Jerry? Seems low, what is the insurance group?

Dunno the insurance group Martin, it's from Aviva, fully comp.

Just remembered I got 15% off because I have house insurance with them. I set the excess at £350, that might have brought it down a bit. Their multi-car insurance means that we will get one third off my wife's car insurance when it comes up for renewal.

my last motorbike was £100 a year fully comp

Yes, but I'll bet you don't do 16k miles a year on it, Scott!

My S2000 Honda renewal came in from Aviva at £288, they reduced it to £248 on asking but I have several rival quotes around £160/£180 from the big companies (ie Churchill), the prices must be getting lower for drivers of a certain vintage.

Hmm. My renewal quote for a little Suzuki Carry 1.3 van, used for domestic purposes @ 3k miles a year is just under £650! It's a postcode lottery, unfortunately, because of the scumbag element in this area we suffer.

I was insuring a rather rapid Hyundai 2.7 V6 Coupe here for the same money last year. Prices are going through the roof.

Don,t do any mileage on it anymore martin , it had a fight with a lady in a mondeo and lost

Move away from 'darn sarf' and smelly old London, daftee, and it'll become cheaper still! ;)

Fully comp with my Merc was £320 per annum - and I'm a wee bit younger than you!! :D

I pay £200 a year for my C1 but I do live in 'Chav Central'

It has less to do with that, Marco, and more to do with:

a) my car is only 4 years old and has a higher market value
b) my car is most likely a higher insurance group

The location will certainly have a say, too.

Marco

Lol - I know, just having a wee giggle-ette... However, location, the fact that my car is garaged and that I work from home, where therefore the car is supervised most of the day, and that I do less than 10k miles a year, will also be a big factor! ;)

Market value has little to do with it. The damage you can do with a particular car and your postcode are the main factors. The faster the car, the more damage you can do to other people, also the cost to repair your car is a factor, eg a scrape on my bm vert rear wing cost 2.5k to fix!

Btw, weirdly 3rd party is often more expensive than fully comp nowadays. They prefer you to be fully comp.

How do you find out which insurance group your car is in? I've looked at the insurance certificate and registration documents, but can't see any mention of any grouping....

You can find out via Autotrader

Oh yes, mileage is a factor too. I would like to be doing much less than 16k a year, but that was my price for having a better standard of living and therefore a longer commute :)

MartinT

Market value has little to do with it.

With my previous car, the insurers had kept the value at its price new for the first three years. When I found out and corrected it to 'market value', the premium dropped considerably. Toe-rags :steam:

Well, I'm sure that it was the right decision, mate, as I am that the commute to work will pass by quickly, comfortably, and occasionally rather entertainingly, in that Beemer of yours! ;)

Reminds me of a bloke I used to work with, passed his test age 19 and against all advice took out a £5K loan, bought a Cavalier SRi for £4K and paid over a grand to insure it third party. He had the car for 4 days before he lost control of it burning down a straight stretch and ran it into a lamppost writing it off. No car, no money and a £5K loan to pay at £100 a month for 5 years.

MartinT

I've always thought that, in addition to enforced use of the 'P' plate, beginner drivers should only be allowed to drive a low insurance group car - say 15 or under? It still won't stop them (boys, especially) acting like twits (or DLAC, as they are called), but it might prevent some of the high speed offs they are prone to.

Good lord chaps - all these fancy or almost new cars :D

Our family Focus is twelve years old in October, so a banger basically despite its 55K total mileage and now 6k a year. Even so, Saga wanted a small fortune last renewal time and the best deal I got was from the AA, but still around £200 IIRC and that's with 14 years NCD.

What seems to be the ages at which car insurance drops off, all else being equal?

Tim
02-04-2013, 09:21
Hmmm, well I now have 10 years NCD, a totally clean licence (never had anything on it ever) and my insurance has just been quoted for renewal and its gone up £62.00  and we are the same age Martin . . .

MartinT
02-04-2013, 09:24

I intend to do exactly that and call them tomorrow Martin, it runs out end of this month - last year it was £150, its now £212. Nowt has changed at all, apart from my move which is 1 mile away and the same post code district, but anyway when I informed them of the change of address, they said the premium was exactly the same.

I just had to get rid of my beloved XJR because of insurance costs. I need a 4x4 now as I live down what is basically a 2 mile long farm track with deep ditches along it. Traversing it in a 420BHP rear wheel drive fire breathing, bull buggering monster was a wee bit tricky with ice on the road so I bought a diesel Freelander. Because I had to use my no claims on the freelander they would only insure me on the Jag without no claims discount putting the premium up to nearly 700 quid for the year. So I sold it. Bloody ridiculous - I can only drive one car at a time and have had donkey's years without an accident. Last year the insurance on the Jag was £350, fully comp limited to 6,000 miles. Car was non standard, it had 50 BHP more than standard thanks to a remap and resized supercharger pulley. God I miss it.....

Rocket powered sofa is a pretty good description I reckon.
Any of the supercharged v8's are simply amazing. They can be tuned to ridiculous levels if you have the cash. One bloke of the forum I used to go to had over 600BHP out of his:eek:

High time a new car 1.5 litre, 100bhp maximum was brought in along with an 80 mph top speed limiter! Nobody needs more. No new car that does less than 50mpg should be marketed and the mpg requirement should be reviewed and raised periodically.

Ah, nothing like a smokey old piece of East German "for the people" crap. I can't believe he wants £1495 for it!

I wonder what on Earth a UK insurance company would make of it. Safety? Spares availability? Mind you, they could simply replace it wholesale after an accident for about £25.

Not to mention that the average Trabant only gets about 25mpg once the engine has a few miles inder its belt. Pretty dismal for a 600cc engine, but two strokes are always juicy for their size.

It's probably a laugh to own though! It's a sort of four wheeled equivalent to the Indian made Royal Enfield 350 diesel motorbike.

No need for more torque, many petrol engined bikes will try and rip your arms out.

Well my unacceptable jump from £150 to £212 was bang out of order, so I did some GoComparing last night and got a quote for £169 which I ran past them today. They tried all sorts to get me to stay, but wouldn't budge from £212.00, so I told them to polity shove it. So tonight I have been comparing meerkats and have just bought a better policy (lower excess and more extras included) than the one I had with Axa and wait for it ....... only £134.61! Not sure I should fess up to this, but its with Saga as I'm over 50, so I'm officially an old fogey now, but who cares if it gets me cheaper car insurance :wheniwasaboy:

You are lucky being where you are. I'm in one of the highest postcode areas for insurance. I'm in my sixties, have full NCB and as a sole user my 1.3 van premium (insured as a private vehicle with less than 3000 miles a year) is well over £600 and that's after a lot of shopping around. Some quotes approached £2000.
