Oyaide MJ-12 vs Funk Firm platter

Has anyone heard a stock platter 1210 with Oyaide MJ-12 against a Funk Firm plattered 1210?

Just wondering how they might compare in outright sonic abilities and also the value for money stakes ...

I've done a search in the archive but can't quite find what I'm looking for.

Before my Dad died late last year I was trying to organise to do this (spoke to Arthur a few times) with a loaner from Funk Firm but their Funked Technics turntable went out to loan (other reviews) before I could organise this and then their new turntable came out and Funk had to do promotion at various USA shows so things became difficult throwing the schedule out and then my world came crashing down.

I am badly back logged re reviews and the Whittelbury show report needs finishing but being honest I am still struggling with grief (good days and bad days) so I am not entirely focussed on Adventures in High Fidelity Audio at the minute.

At some point and the Funk platter is the last bit I need to start the Technics reviews I will do this but I can't say when - sorry. Circumstances have messed things up badly as I had hoped to have the entire AIHFA Technics feature done and published - I need the room as three turntables take up a lot of space.

If I can't sort out a platter soon I will just have to go with what I have amassed to date - which would be a shame as I was aiming to be as complete as I could be with this Technics series of review articles.

I can fully appreciate what you are going through with your dad. My dad passed away some 15 years ago now but sometimes feels like yesterday ...

The Technics article has become a bit of a joke of late as its been in the offing for awhile now with me gathering up items to use over the last year or so. There are three 1200's. various bearings, various mats, various psus, various arms, one platter, various feet etc sitting ready to go but I don't want to leave Funk out of the equation so I will email Arthur again to see if I can get a date for a loan. Failing that I will buy a platter (I have already sank quite a bit of my own money into this, very few loaners have been forth coming - thanks to the few that have and my profuse apology for this being late, very late).

Re my Dad yep its all I can do however......

It has got progressively harder to deal with, best way I can put it is I feel that the entire foundations and grounding I had have crumbled and slipped away - its a very new reality being an orphan. The process of sorting things out has been awful (not under my control) and with the family home now gutted and empty it feels like two lives and my past has been swept into the great dust bin of history. All that was there now nothing but fleeting memories in the ether.

Each date in the year now hurt badly Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Birthdays, Christmas etc hollow and loaded with pain. All I can say to any who read this cherish your family, love your parents and be there for them because you never know the day, the hour or the minute.....

Hi Neil, apologise not, AOS is a great place with top blokes who are not just total hifi lovers as you probably know. We share jokes, fun, topical views, world news, frustrations, generosity, advise and yes pain too ! It's why I'm here - top place and people. I lost my Dad 4 years ago the 24th of this month. I've had good days and bad, good memories and bad ones too. Hang on in there though bro. We wish you every blessing, strength and comfort too!

Hi Julian - I've had the Oyaide (and it's matching weight too) It looks gorgeous as you know. Sonically it wasn't bad but not better than the stock platter and mat in my system at the time to justify the spend so I sold it (them) on quickly. I also didn't like the idea of a hunk of alluminium on top of the ali / metal stock platter to be honest. It also felt a bit like a boy racer approach to me and not a genuine properly addressed sonic upgrade - The stock platter rings like a bell, tap it on the top in situe with your ear up close - man it rings and that always bugged me. Fast forward and having bit the bullet and acquired the Mike New ETP I know it was the best move I could have made. The Funk is said to be excellent and looks fairly similar to Mikes ETP, just lighter. They both do not ring at all and that most definately translates to the music - a more natural presentation and more inner detail expressed from recordings. I am in no doubt that one of these 'proper' upgrade platters is an essential 'Techie' upgrade, along with an arm upgrade, external power supply and Mike New bearing. Dont 'half step it' as my smart younger brother always says even if you have to wait and save then do that - 'one good thing and done' as my Mum says :) The fact I'm up at this hour glued to my easy chair going through tune after tune of fave vinyl speaks volumes - sublime !! :) ;)
