Now, normally, I love snow. Had this been Christmas Eve, Del and I would've been in our element, as it would've felt really comforting and Christmassy, but IN BLOODY MARCH?? You can keep it!! :rolleyes:

It's not all bad, we've got the log fire roaring nicely, so we're nice and toasty, candles lit, some nice tunes on, and are munching some of my mum's scrumptious home-made Welsh cakes, washed down with warm mugs of tea (sadly no alcohol yet, until Lent is over next week)! :)

A friend and I were toying with the idea of going to the hi-fi show at the airport tomorrow - that was until I looked out of the window this morning!!!

Lovely looking house, Marco.
Dry here but bloody cold. The wind is coming straight off the north sea, temperature of 1 degree but feels like -8.
Man cave project on hold cos I can't get out to fix the roof. On the plus side I have raided my bits box and put together a turntable, will post about it later in the gallery.
The fire is burning but had to buy another load of logs instead of spending money on sweets. And beer.

I was considering that show, its only 20 mins drive away for me, but I don't think I will bother. As well as the entrance fee, you've also got to pay the extortionate airport parking fees as well I believe. As you say I think the turn out will be effected quite badly by the weather even though where I live in Manchester there's no snow whatsoever.

Only a few miles south of Manchester in the High Peak here. Quite a bit of snow first thing this morning, but that almost completely melted as the snow turned to rain this afternoon. Now snowing again and there's a fair bit on the ground now and the forecast is for almost continuous snow overnight and tomorrow into the afternoon.
Undecided if to go to the hi-fi show tomorrow - think I'll play it by ear and may leave it until Sunday if its bad tomorrow morning. I'll be going by bus, so no parking fees to worry about :)
Heading our way, apparently. :( Love it normally, but bored of winter now and don't want the roads to be rubbish tomorrow as a few of us are off down to London for the Tina Dico gig.

There's a good covering of the stuff here, I'm only 30 miles away from the Manchester show but I think I'm gonna give it a miss, unless things improve by Sunday. I was going to tax the Ducati in April but I'm having second thoughts on that too:rolleyes:

Lots of snow here and lots of power cuts, power fluctuations so the gear is all switched off. Its not that unusual to get snow in March heck it can even happen in April and early May as well.
There have been no flights in or out of Belfast today and if I was going to the show - when it was in London I would have been flying out tonight to have two days at it - but if I had been today, nope no flights. Just as well I decided not to bother.

Its not that unusual to have a wee bit of snow in March later is not unheard of but its rare.
All of Belfast was without power earlier tonight but thankfully its back on. This storm is hitting here quite badly.
Last March was unusual I think.

Driving past Saddleworth this morning in the van was about as scary as driving gets, white knuckle stuff.
Coming back this afternoon wasn't as bad as the M62 was just crawling, never got out of 1st gear, or so it seemed.
Got 10 miles further along towards Manchester and you wouldn't have known it had been snowing.

Thanks for the pics, dude. However, that looks fairly normal, compared to here. We've got about a foot and a half of snow in the back of the house and 18 inches at the front, and it's still falling.
The side roads are completely unusable, and the main ones, reallistically, you'd need a 4x4 to travel on them with any degree of safety... I'll see if I can take some more pictures later.

To be honest, we're fine at the moment, it has been snowing for a few hours but not laying - here, at least - I'll see how it goes before setting off but hopefully in this corner of the UK at least we've escaped it this time.
It may be fine at the moment, mate, and you may even make it to the gig, but you can't judge things on that. You have to judge it on how the situation will be later, on the return journey home!
The forecast is for the snow we're been experiencing here in N Wales, etc, to spread THROUGHOUT the country, over the course of the weekend, and that includes the south. The last satellite picture I seen, forecasting the weather for later today and Sunday, showed your neck of the woods covered in white...!
All I'm saying is don't be fooled into a false sense of security, simply because it looks ok where you are NOW, as that situation could (and likely will) change very soon. Check the weather forecast, watch the news to see what's happening, and make an informed decision for yourself. Being safe is much more important than anything else.

Anyway, I'm only trying to make people aware of the potential risks. One of my worst nightmares would be to be stuck in motorway traffic jams for hours, or worse, trapped overnight in a car, all for the sake of going to a fooking concert.
Perhaps others aren't so bothered and prioritise things differently - and that's fine :)

I'm a boy scout too, got caught out before but I had a cold weather sleeping bag in the boot, water, food, thermos, book and music, so I was fine - quite an adventure actually and a darn sight better than survival training on the Brecon Beacons with a poxy tent! Wouldn't want to do it with kids on-board mind you, but its far from being a nightmare for me, but as I said I'm barking :lol:

Lol... Each to their own, mate. I'd be the same way, single or married. I was never in the scouts, hate camping (only ever done it in the back garden, as a kid), or being away from my creature comforts, so my motto is: if in doubt, stay safe! I'd rather be safely tucked up inside, nice and snuggly in front of a coal fire, or in a nice warm bed, than stuck in a freezing cold car in the middle of the motorway for hours! :exactly:

I totally agree, especially the way that everything grinds to a halt when the predictions for what was about to come were clearly there for EVERYONE to see! :doh:
I simply don't understand how we 'Joe Public' can prepare ourselves for forthcoming heavy snow and bad weather conditions, but the local authorities, responsible for gritting our roads, and transport networks, fail to, and grind to a halt so easily, when they should be more informed and better prepared than us!!!

We've had it off-and-on all this month. It's been down to -7 this week. It's not unusual to have snow in April here.
We still don't get the amount we used to when I was young. I remember one year we woke up and the back door was snowed-up and we had to dig our way to get to the coalhouse and toilet and you couldn't see out of the back windows! Walking on the path and you were'nt that far from the top of telegraph poles!
The dire winter of '63 my granny had us out to morning mass. It was ABSOLUTELY BITTER! The bus driver got us there after getting stuck numerous times. Coming back though he got stuck and we had to walk most of the way. We couldn't wait to get back home and get in front of the fire.

But what if you'd rather just be in your own home, nice and snuggy, drinking your own beer and wine, than having to get dressed up in winter clothing, on a freezing cold night, simply just to walk across the road to a pub and pay rather more for the experience, in the company of a bunch of roasters? ;)
It *might* not be about being lazy, but rather simply choosing to do something that you much prefer instead.....

Aside from the fact that it's Lent and we've been off all alcohol for five weeks, we haven't been to a pub for about 3 months! Generally, these days, we'd far rather drink at home. The reality is that we go out to eat in restaurants much more than we drink in pubs.

I too was in the Scouts and an instructor for years after I left Ventures, and have run many survival weekends, (some in the snow) teaching kids to make bivis, catch and skin/gut rabbits, fire-lighting etc., so I am already well prepared - Snugpack -15 sleeping bag has been in the boot all winter plus spare clothing and goretex boots, water, energy food etc. Good point on the music though Tim, I'll pack the iPod! :)

Lol... I understand. Del's completely different. First of all, she wouldn't touch a Bingo hall with a bargepole (!) secondly, if it's to socialise with her friends, she'll either invite them round to ours for a meal and/or a few drinks, go round to theirs and do the same, or go out to a restaurant or coffee shop. Pubs just don't come into the equation.
The situation is almost exactly the same with my mates, only the difference is we'll be listening to music - we just aren't that into 'pubbing'. The only time that it becomes rather attractive is in the summer, when it's warm and sunny, and we can take a trip out to a quaint country pub and have a meal outside in their gardens, and enjoy the nice scenery, whilst eating some quality grub! :cool:
To simply be cooped up inside any old pub, just to drink or chat shite with some daftees, holds about as much attraction for me (or Del) as sitting on a freezing cold bog, pressing out a particularly troublesome stool!! :D

We don't really do wine bars, as they're generally full of pretentious idiots - and we certainly wouldn't go anywhere where there was a chance of drunken louts causing fights! :nono: We're not into 'clubs' either, whether it be drinking in working men's clubs, or in poncy golf clubs, etc. It's just not our thing.
What we like best are going to quaint country pubs in the middle of nowhere, full of character and SOUL, which serve high-quality local ales and top-notch pub grub, and the vibe is nice and relaxed, many of which can be found in Yorkshire....! ;)
Luckily, there are plenty round here, too. However, we do occasionally eat out in some nice restaurants, but generally avoid those in busy towns.

Lol... That sort of stuff doesn't bother Del or I one iota. You take us as you find us. We're not 'uptight' that way. Homes are to relax and live in, and if there's a bit of a mess sometimes, so what. It can get cleared up afterwards.

As long as we could find a table in the corner to ourselves, well away from the idiots, it wouldn't be a problem. We tend to be too busy talking to each other, and enjoying each other's company, to notice much of what folk are doing round about us :)
Oh, and that's another thing, I refuse to drink anywhere where I can't sit down at a table of my own (and share with Del or friends and family). Standing up boozing in crowded pubs is a complete no-no, which is why we generally avoid going out on Friday or Saturday nights.

Indeed - that shite would drive me demented! Or crapola muzak pumping out from shite-o boom boxes. If I can't hold a conversation with the people I'm with because of noise, I'm outa there!! It's why we avoid city centre pubs like the plague. That's one of the worst things about London - you can't move inside the pubs there! :rolleyes:
The barn in your local pub sounds like an ace idea. If there were bands I was interested in hearing playing there, I'd be going there regularly, as long as the beer was good!! ;)

Yup - too right. No immediate neighbours, though. Those are ex-council houses, mainly full of OAPs, so no trouble. However, at one time that was just empty fields, and part of the estate, which led up to Acton Hall, about 2 miles away in the distance!!
Sadly, that's gone now, leaving both gate houses, ours and the other one at the end of the old estate, along with the original gates, as evidence of the good old times...
Btw, dude, if you look carefully, you can see how close we are to a pub. Observe the sign for The Four Dogs, just to the left of the first pic - and we're NEVER in there!! ;)

A bit of snow and a playful 30mph wind made the day 'interesting'. In fact it required full scottish winter mountaineering equipment!

The road is under here somewhere. It actually took over an hour to battle for 3/4 mile through the drifts.

Bit blustery at the edge of the moor. Didn't take any more as it turned into a whiteout, not terribly interesting. Finished off later with lumps of nourishing cake from our local farm shop.:)

You've got snow, here in Oz where I am we're still getting over 30deg Celsius (really unseasonably warm) and a few days ago a tornado ripped through a caravan park at Mulwalla and absolutely ripped it to shreds - vans were thrown 80 metres and residents were telling tales of vans rolling eight times as it disintegrated around them.
Know what the odd thing is? We NEVER get tornadoes in Australia, at least till now.

There are actually hundreds of tornados every year in the UK. They are either above ground level or in remote areas most of the time so you don't hear about them. There have been a few that caused considerable damage in recent years but they are much smaller than in other parts of the world.

Well that was fun! snowed in and no electricity since late Fri. until about an hour ago.
There's a good covering of the stuff here, I'm only 30 miles away from the Manchester show but I think I'm gonna give it a miss, unless things improve by Sunday. I was going to tax the Ducati in April but I'm having second thoughts on that too:rolleyes:

It's Ironic really as a town near me 'Burton on Trent' has a Pirelli factory that make snow tyres for Europe apparently.

Hail here, today (at least, it was just "pea" sized) and winds that blew my 2+ ton vehicle all over the road. I really am ready for spring/summer. I just hope it doesn't go straight from cold to blistering hot. Though long, it really has been a mild winter for us. Is too much to ask for a mild summer??
No more snow so far today, but what's there isn't shifting yet, even though the sun is out - and there's more predicted for the end of the week! :doh:

We had about 4" yesterday morning, and it was quite snowy driving back from Hertfordshire, but the roads were deserted so it was a nice steady drive home and no need for my disaster plan to be put into operation! Melting quite quickly today, and even on the back roads taking little 'un to Playgroup earlier it was all clear. Some more forecast for tonight and also Thursday. :(
I know, it's a fooking nightmare... However, the most important thing is being prepared (as indeed you were)! :)

Not much over here on the East coast but the wind from the Sea is absolutely bitter with really strong gusts the last few days.
No wonder it snowed so much in the West with all this cold air from the east meeting the moist air from the sea over Wales.
There will probably be a heatwave or drought in a fortnight :D

It what makes it such a unique country. Heck we have had snow in July before, what's the fuss about? Being brought up in Sheffield snow is just one of those things but in the midlands it's a show stopper for some weird reason... 1 inch of snow = BBC headlines of 'Frozen Midlands' , 'Midland Whiteout' , "and we are live at the gritting services".. just makes me laugh.

Lol... Some of us have had rather more than 1" though, Joe (try about 3 feet of the stuff), and very long driveways, which have been jammed solid with 3-4 feet (especially where it's drifted) of snow - preventing us from getting out for the last 3 days! ;)
Anyway, we're half way there now, digging ourselves out - we should be finished by about teatime!! Will take some pics of the mountains of snow we're shifted later.... :)

You see, that is proper snow, 3-4 feet is what I grew up with, digging out the car and driveway but here in the midlands that would cause everyone to hibernate I think... lol - I just love to watch the regional BBC news, they go nuts over 1" of the stuff...

When I looked out the window at 7.30 this morning it was snowing and it was a couple of inches deep on the ground . By 10.30 all the snow had totally disappeared :scratch: Not it's cloudy/sunny but bliddy freezing :) ( But dry )
