Now that I am officially retired and therefore, in theory, don't have to work (ha) I do manage to find the odd moment just to play.

I have exactly zero technical knowledge of hi-fi. I am of the suck it and see persuasion. This has varying results, usually not too wonderful I must admit but just occasionally.......

.... yonks ago, I had an old pair of Ditton 15s. The cabinets and ABRs were beyond hope (I think they cost me around £5).

My wife's system, which we keep in our main bedroom is typical Pioneer monsters and some JBLs. The treble had to be heard to be believed, the cats used to leave the area in pain. Conveniently, the HF1300 from the Dittons was a drop in replacement. What a difference, they actually sound quite nice now. They always had good bass but the treble and midrange have been transformed.

However that left me some bits to play with. I also had a pair of KEF Cantatas that someone had played a bit loud at a party and strangely, it was the crossovers that died.

So, play away.

No1. B200's with another Celestion tweeter (can't remember the model number) and the Ditton crossovers. Not bad at all, very smooth with a good deep bass response - this being driven by an old Rogers Ravensbrook amp.

No 2. T27s with Celestion 8" from Dittons. Fantastic clarity, most surprised at the info coming out. But..... absolutely no bass at all!! The normal system in the spare room has Kef 101s driven by either the 34/306 or MF A1. The little KEFs seem rather dull in comparison but put the base to shame.

So play No 2a.
A couple of KEF B139 ABRs from the Cantatas in a MDF box, tacked onto the bottoms and all sealed up with mastic at the joints!! Like I said, science gets no look in here. Works of art they aint but hey, its prototype time.

WOW! Suddenly there is REAL bass here. I thought they were still lacking until I played a bit of Bach and in came the low organ notes and the floor shook.

I played some Take 5 and just couldn't stop listening through the whole album. I don't suppose they will replace the Quad 57s in the main system, but what a surprise. I will now build some proper cabinets for them.

Just goes to show that its worth playing with stuff, even if you don't know what you are doing.

Best not to use the T27s with the Ditton 15 crossovers. The crossover point is too low and the roll in too shallow, also the impedance matching may not be right. You may blow the T27s.

Why not use the Ditton 15 bass units/crossovers/tweeters in a reflex cabinet using the T27s as supertweeters?

There's nothing like a bit of experimental DIY for having fun!

From a Flickr image, click Share and then copy the HTML code. Click on the AoS Insert Image button and paste the code in, then Ok. Now for the tricky bit: edit the link inside the [ IMG ] tags to be only the http url and nothing else (so, starting with http and ending with jpg).

I've done one for you here:

I'd be a tweeter short!! Forget to say that the T27/Celestion 8" combo has a KEF concerto crossover in it - ebay special. My first try was Infinite baffle, then tried a reflex port but it all went a bit plummy so decided to play further.

I don't want to break up the B200/Celestion box as its better than Ronnie's JBLs and will serve as their replacement when the inevitable happens.

The problem with lack of knowledge is not knowing how close you may be!!

Well, at least you're having fun Gordon. Nice to see an old Ravensbrook amplifier in your piccies and is that a Dynaco tuner I spotted?

Nope, its a Sugden tuner. Of the three I had, Quad FM3, Fm4 and the Sugden, its the best sounding. Bit twitchy on the tuning but once it in tune its great.

Sadly, the hi-fi has to pay for itself these days so I sold the 33,FM3 and 50Ds recently to pay for going Mac based. Wish I hadn't in a way, but needs must.

Quite why I still have two tuners still, I'm not sure, as the signal here in deepest France is rubbish. A few good classical stations though.

Thank you.

Wood I do know something about, its this modern electrification stuff that has me confused.

Its great to play....as they say.
Pity you cant restore the Kef Cantatas, fantastic speakers in their own right and now usually fetch a good price to......

I never heard them working properly. I did try them briefly with another KEF crossover but I'm quite sure that wouldn't have worked anywhere close to correctly. They sounded very dull which is not something I usually experience where a T27 is involved.

As it is, I am quite happy with the two rather bizza pairs of speakers. Both are very different in presentation but the ones with the HF1300/B200 are nearest to the balance of the Quad 57's so I will keep them as is just in case.

The other pair will remain as a test pair for any more bright ideas I may have:eyebrows:
