I had the original 12L & found them to be very poor with transistor amplifiers but okay if not great with an EL34 valve amp.

IIRC The 11L use the same xover & drivers just a slightly smaller box but memory is fuzzy :cool:

Edit: Just had a look at Google & the "classic signatures" are an entirely different series from what I had so I cant comment.

A friend and I had a demo of these at Sevenoaks Hi-Fi in Watford and were not impressed, they sounded boxy and flat next to the Epos M12s we also heard. It did not help having also listened to a pair of Sonus Faber Minuettos just down the road at Acoustic Arts. They were the best compact speakers we heard that day. We both formed the same opinion of the Quads, they were just not very good.

I've heard them since and haven't changed my mind. My mate bought the Epos M12s and was reasonably happy for a short while, but ended up buying a pair of second hand Sonus Faber Electas which sounded beautiful.

Coincidentally, I had three lads in the shop one Saturday afternoon, a few years ago. One of them had just bought a pair of these speakers from Sevenoaks in Watford and were keen to use them to audition amps.

After half an hour we were getting nowhere, struggling to hear any differences between the amps when I suggested swopping the speakers. Instantly, they sat up, took notice and could hear what the different amps were doing. The Quads were so bland and uninspiring that they rendered all music as flat and boring.

As I recall, the lad bought a pair of PMC DB1 and an amp, taking the Quads back to Sevenoaks for a refund.

The mags, as we know rave about a lot of crap stuff! Ever wonder why?
