View Full Version : Cartridge wiring question

Tried to wire my first cartridge this weekend, and think that I've failed the basic IQ test! I've got an SL1210MK2. It had a Stanton 505v3 cartridge that had been installed by a service centre.

I bought an Ortonfon 2M Blue and an Ortofon head shell. The heads shell came with the wire pre-attached. There were no labels, instructions or diagrams with the head shell, so I left the pre-wired cables alone.

The cartridge came colour coded so I attached red-red, blue-blue, green-green & white-white. Set it up. Seemed to work. But I'm concerned that I may have got the phase wrong.

So... and this is where I started to really doubt my work... I compared the wiring of the Stanton and the Ortofon. Completely different.Given that "a picture tells a thousand words" I've attached (I hope!) a picture showing the two cartridges side by side, a simple diagram showing how each is wired and the diagram from the Ortofon booklet. I don't have a Stanton booklet and can't find one on their website (Ortofon's site is very slick).

Could someone tell me if I've made a school boy error somewhere? My concern is that the head shell may have been incorrectly set up...or I've done something else wrong!

Thank you

The ORTOFON headshell is correct - as you look from the front the white wire should be top left, red top right, blue bottom left and green bottom right.

Colour codes -

White L+

Red R+

Blue L-

Green R-

Nowt to worry about mate.

Just checked to be sure I was right & dug a coupla' carts/H/Shells out.

I have Ortofon & AT carts & they have the pins configured the opposite way round to each other. I think you can trust Ortofon to have their colour coding bands all correct.......does it sound right?

The HEADSHELL wires should all fit a standard. Cartridge pins are all over the shop.....

Thanks everyone. I thought even I could follow such a simple set of instructions! Thanks for the reassurance that it is correct.
