Wasn't sure where to put this thread so please feel free to move it if its face doesn't fit please mods ;)

Powered up Spotify this morning to find myself presented with a total mess. Euugh, toooo daaamn briiiight!!! And where has the feature to 'Star' an entire album gone to? Now I have to 'Star' each individual track, this just won't do. Can I have the old look back please??? :(

Tim

Yeah I hate it too Dave, but I think we're stuck with it.

That was one of the things I liked about Spotify, the look, as it wasn't like iTunes, now it looks like an Apple product and to be frank the new look really sucks :(

Personally I quite like it but what is really annoying me is that if you have a list of all the albums for a given artist, if you want to add one track from a specific album you can't just do it from the artist level, you have to go into the specific album before it will let you. I'm sure it wasn't like that before?

synsei
16-03-2013, 11:02
It is too garish!!! Just thought I'd reiterate the point... :spew:

Another problem I came across yesterday: Now, when one selects a specific album to play, instead of stopping at the end of the album Spotify goes off and plays the next recommended album by that artist. Did the company actually bother to consult their customers before implementing any of these changes?

So, who are the competition? I cannot stand Grooveshark, it looks to have been designed by a 12 year old with ADHD, so that's out, suggestions anyone? Is WE7 any good?

Umm, I don't seem to have it (which is possibly not a bad thing judging by your comments).

My version is Spotify Premium v0.8.8.348.ge445f5b9. This is the same version I have running at work.
What version is the new one?

Huge number of complaints about this on the Spotify community pages and I mean a lot!

Mostly about the garish 'Apple' like GUI they have implemented, but also the change in usability and the software taking over, no doubt controlled by their links with Facebook. Now that's fine if they are providing a 'free' service, which as we know if you enjoy a 'free' service on the Internet, then it's you that is the product. But as a paying Premium member I really object to this level of control, with no option to turn features off or select if you want the update or not. I'm seriously considering ditching my payment subscription and downgrading to the free service. Spotify is potentially f***** as far as I'm concerned and looks like it could end up being totally controlled by Facebook :(

Might give Napster a go?

My entry on the community pages:

Hi all from a long term and previously satisfied Spotify user, but not anymore.

Can I revert to the previous release at all, I really hate the new version? The new look is way too garish (I liked the understated dark grey presentation, it looked sophisticated and gave Spotify its own identity), now Spotify looks like a plastic fantastic Apple clone :(

More seriously though are some glaring faults: Why can I not 'Star' a complete album now? I have to 'Star' each individual track on the new version which is a royal PITA. When I select an album to play, instead of stopping after the last track, Spotify now goes off all by itself and plays whatever other foo it can find, WHY??? Why can I no longer 'Star' an album in the Related Artists list? C'mon guys, pull yourselves together and revert back to the previous, professional looking interface, the new one appears to have been designed by an idiot... :(

p.s. Thank the Lord the idiot responsible for the above didn't insist on mandatory Faecesbook membership for seasoned veterans like myself, otherwise my account with Spotify would be history (HINT: Not all your customers are teenage Apple geeks, many are mature sorts who consider Faecesbook and its ultra-intrusive nature to be the spawn of the devil).

Kind regards

Mr Angry....

They'll never change it now! Just like the fact that you can now only sign up with facetwat account details. It's been that way for a while. I only ever use it on my touch and phone. Is there no way to revert to a previous version?

Revert to old Spotify by downloading it from here: http://www.filehorse.com/download-spotify/12683/

Any idea how you can stop it from updating Dave, mine seems to be automatic when I shut it down and restart?

I hope you can make sense of this Tim because I can't:

ickm3for wrote:
Hi to stop update install v 8.5 DO NOT LOG ON go to c:/ users name appdata roaming spotify ( it will de diffrent in win xp etc)
then make the two files Spotify_new.exe / Spotify_new.exe.sig these will have extension of .txt go to orgnize and remove
tick in hide file extension in known file types click apply
then go to rename and remove .txt in Both files click to make read only
simply creating 2x .txt files wont work
if you go to properties it should say 1 exe file and 1 sig file this works Mick

Go to Start
Control Panel
Folder Options
Click on the 'View' Tab
Then simply uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types'.
Then click Apply
Finally click Ok
Now you will be able to change file extensions
now go to files created will look like spotify_new.exe.txt this
needs changing to spotify_new.exe ie make the file an exe file not a txt file
spotify can not update as you cannot have 2 files of the same type and same name in the same folder
Do the same with the other file spotify_new.exe.sig.txt this needs changing to spotify_new.exe.sig
make it a .sig file not a .txt file the files will no longer look like text files hope this helps
i removed both files as a test and it updated reinstalled and it didnt so it works 100% you just have to make files of the corect type tried to post the 2 files for you dut would not let me will put them on my own web site if required have fun and enjoy spotify as it should be Mick

I'm ditching my premium status and downgrading to unlimited, if it stays the same I will revert to the free version, they are losing at least 1 customer. As a paying customer I don't like to be controlled as much. Shit happens I guess and it was inevitable I suppose - as soon as Facebook got involved we were bound to lose control as customers and be 'moulded' into what they want from us as users . . . nothing lasts forever, shame really as I was a big fan.

synsei
16-03-2013, 18:30
I was a big fan too, any good alternatives? I signed up for WE7 today but I haven't tried it yet, any good?

I signed up to Spotify before Faecesbook got involved so I don't have to worry about a lot of the cr*p connected with the social side of Spotty. If they ever try to force me into joining FB I will be off for sure... :steam:

Faecesbook

:rfl:

Mine still hasn't updated, but if it really does end up white and looking like iTunes crap then I will object and probably revoke my membership too. Let's see if they are interested in listening to their paying customers.

synsei
16-03-2013, 18:36
What I understand of it from reading the Spotty forum, the update is being rolled out over a month to all their clients. The complaints thread has been going for nearly a month now without one bit of input or news from any Spotify staff or representatives. The regulars say this is typical and that we will all be left hanging until either we accept the changes or leave, which is what happened when the Faecesbook merger was announced apparently ;)

I can't seem to get the new version on my W8 or Xp machines, even if I download it from the spotify website.

If the new windows version is as good as the tablet version, I'll be a happy man :) I never did like the old spreadsheet style windows program.

As with everything, you need to give it a chance, I reckon.

Tim

Are you lot just being old fuddys...?...
Use it on a laptop powered by battery and see how 'fuddy' we are. CPU usage has increased significantly, heat levels up, power consumption up, search times have also increased significantly - the ugly UI is the least of the issues. I love technology and embrace it, this is a monumental retrograde step and that's not just my opinion. I guess if you just flit around and listen to the odd track here and there you might say 'what's all the fuss'. If you use it a lot and know what's happening inside your computer and care about power use, search functionality, compiling play-lists and tagging albums, then it is a big problem and if you pay 10 quid a month and see a cynical change for the benefit of the company, rather than improvements for the customer, then again its a problem.

These are some of the issues and there are countless: http://community.spotify.com/t5/Help-Desktop-Linux-Mac-and/Horrible-update-0-8-8/td-p/265098

I. Design & Layout

1. White background in Artist/Album/Search view

Too bright for the eyes – Inconsistent to old grey elements – Harder to read

Ideas: Customizing of skins - Change the white interface.

The idea's status is now "Under Consideration".

2. New pages are web-based

Longer time to display (slower navigation) for most users – loading errors for some users

3. Star albums at Artist view is no longer possible
4. No different versions for an album on Artist view anymore

You can only show them in Album view.

5. The release date of an album is no longer shown in Album view next to the album

The year is only shown really small next to the label under the songs.

6. The title section on album/artist page is too small

Long titles are often cut off and there’s not even a tooltip to show the whole title.

7. Local files that are missing on Spotify are no longer displayed in artist view

You have to search for this specific, missing album to view it.

8. Playing tracks from top tracks in artist view don’t give you the little speaker symbol next to the song anymore
9. Top tracks in Artist page don’t have a star icon/popularity bar anymore

Idea: Top title list has no more stars

10. Playlists in profile are no longer sorted by public/private but just displayed as 1 long list

Idea: Secret, public & subscribed Playlists toggle view in 'profile'

II. Basic functionality

1. Total playlist time is gone

Idea: Bring back total playlist length

The idea's status is now under "Watch this space".

2. From artist page you can’t drag a song to a playlist anymore

This got acknowledged as bug here.

3. Filter on artist page is no longer possible

Idea: Bring back the filter option on album / artist pages

A developer said they will bring it back here and the status got changed to "Watch this space".

4. Blank space in the “Now playing” box no longer directs to the current song position

Only a click on the album cover works now.

Idea: Click Artist/Song-Title bar to go to song

If you play from artist page it doesn’t redirect you to the song position, just to the position you had scrolled to.

5. You can no longer shuffle/repeat the whole catalogue on artist page

It just repeats/shuffle in the album/top list you are currently in.

Idea: Bring back play all songs by artist

6. Playing an album on album view will not stop after the last song but go to the first song of the next album

Related idea: Fix the Play Queue!

7. Ctrl/Cmd + A doesn't work anymore on Artist page to easily mark all songs

8. Clicking on an artist in the related artist view and afterwards clicking on "back" returns you to the original artist page
After clicking "back" you should return again to the position you scrolled to in the related artist page like in 0.8.5.

III. Social

1. Friends don’t get displayed on the friends list automatically anymore

You have to follow the friends that you want to see there.

Idea: Allow Greater Control Over Content Displayed in the Activity Feed

2. Friends don’t get displayed in a compact list anymore at the people list

Makes it harder to share music. - You don't see the exact time when a friend has listened to a song anymore.

The possibility to mark a friend as "favorite" is gone. - The profile picture got replaced with album art of the song.

Ideas: Go back to the old activity feed - Favorite Functionality in the Activity Feed

3. You can no longer see all your friends in the Follow tab

Idea: Ability to View All Facebook Friends in Follow Tab

4. You no longer have an overview of your playlist subscribers

You are presented with just 3 pictures of subscribers, no way to show a list of them.

Idea: Ability to View All playlist followers

5. In your profile all playlists are listed and not only the one you published

Makes it harder to see, which playlists are public since you have to go down through the whole list.

6. The "Who to follow" recommendations seem pretty random and don't fit to the own music taste

Idea: Personalised Who to Follow notifications

IV. Others

1. Track count and playlist picture don’t update automatically in playlist anymore

2. Not playable tracks are still counting for the number of tracks in the playlist
Artists of those tracks will also show up in description of the playlist ("Including artists: ...")

3. Some users report albums are no longer in the right order (unconfirmed)

4. Some users report playlist sorting options are not saved

This got acknowledged as bug here.

5. Some users report album covers don't show properly, often there's just a replacer (unconfirmed)

When you actually play the song with the missing album cover, the cover will be displayed immediately.

6. Delete playlist confirmation window is gone

With 1 click your playlist can be deleted now if you press the wrong button.

Trust us when we says it's a real pigs ear ;)

I have just downgraded from Premium, not paying 10 quid a month for that and if it stays I'll go to a free membership - they have sold their soul to Facebook and tracking their customer user habits, again of you don't pay for it, no problem, but I pay them £120 a year, or at least I used to

My main reason for using a service like that is to discover new music , and 320kbs mp3 sounds good.
I used spotify and deezer finally settling for deezer because for me it took me to music outside my comfort zone, they do have a litlle less to offer in different artists, still more than enough .
The premium is about the same in price.

Tim
17-03-2013, 17:19
One thing I find really annoying with this update is the way its keeps playing music, even if you don't want it to. I track everything I play on Last.fm and even when you select a single album on Spotify now, it will continue to play when it has finished that album - really annoying. There is so much not to like about it now, that I really think I'm going to bin it for the free version, I have binned my Premium account already.

Such a shame, but this shit is happening all over the net now as they take advantage of their users - something you hope not to happen as a subscriber, but f*** em', I have enough music to listen too without worrying about Spotify.

I will go back to version 0.8.5 first and try to stop it updating, but I'm sure they will find a way to plug people using it. It certainly seems a lot of folk in the community are downgrading to 8.5. Reading the Twitter feed is funny, lot's of angry campers out there.

I am checking out rdio (http://www.rdio.com/) just now. It's a bit 'Persil White' but so far I am quite impressed. T'is available to try for free, SQ is very good, even on FTP, and it is priced the same as Spotty but with a few more bells 'n' whistles. I've done some searches for material I know to be rare and so far rdio has come up trumps every time. I will suck it and see for a little while but I can see me moving over if Spotify continues to ignore its customers. Oh, and you don't need a Faecesbook account to sign up just a plain old email addy, registration could not be simpler. You can of course sign up with FB or Twitter if you are socially minded...

I've never gone for the paid up version and have used it a lot less lately, but I've just received an email from them to say that they've ditched the five plays per track rule, which was a proper nuisance.
That makes it a bit better, but I won't be exercising my new found freedom with Alex' Album Club selection though, I'm afraid! Once would have been fine for this particular album.

I have no idea what they have done to Spotify, but it now takes roughly twice as long to load and I also notice that when it is playing on my office machine it has an impact on the speed and efficiency of my PC, which has a 3.7GHz quad core CPU, 2 SATA III SSD drives and 16GB RAM, so its no slouch - they really have f***** this one up :(

Why do they always have to mess with stuff

MartinT
22-03-2013, 11:35
Ok, I'm really confused and need to verify version numbers, please.

My Spotify Premium client both at home and work are v0.8.8.348.ge445f5b9.
They have grey bars left/right and a white centre section. Albums & tracks appear with alternate white/pale grey rows. The right-hand pane now shows Activity, which is worthless. Is this the version that people are objecting to?

I have no performance issues with it at all, there is no detectable slow-down with either machine (both are AMD CPUs with W8-64 on SSD, work is quad-core and my home one is hex-core) and searches are fast.

It looks like this:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8516/8579012875_0ac64c144e_b.jpg

If you have something different, please could you post a version number and screenshot?

Tim
22-03-2013, 11:52
I have a version that people on the Spotify forum are up in arms about (349) Martin.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/greatgig/spotify-1_zps7fad4e56.jpg

My player window is the same as yours, but this is really what bothers me and it only started when I was upgraded to the latest version. I am not sure what is going on, maybe the software is mapped to use more resources if you have a more powerful machine? There is nothing in the options to limit its usage, other than the cache folder which I located on a separate drive to the player and have limited to a maximum of 1GB. I have a Premium account, but I have downgraded it to Unlimited, but it hasn't kicked in yet, as my next billing period is April.

The load time is significantly longer than before, especially first load on a rebooted machine. If I shutdown and restart it roughly halves. But look what happens when its playing and then with it shutdown;

Spotify running.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/greatgig/cpu01_zps2a5539e4.jpg

Spotify shutdown.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/greatgig/cpu02_zps0f6ed1b9.jpg

If I feel inclined I might whip out some RAM and under-clock my CPU to see if it is using more system resource if its available?

Tim
22-03-2013, 11:56
Band/music searches are fast, so I don't have this issue like some do, its the performance hit my machine takes that I don't like, as well as its look and most of all the way it plays stuff you don't want it too after your selected music has finished - that REALLY ticks me off.

MartinT
22-03-2013, 11:58
Thanks, Tim. It seems like I haven't hit the nasty version yet. That's astonishing CPU usage! I'm showing 1-2% utilisation while playing music on this version. It barely notices.

So, from what you're saying, there is no visual change between 348 and 349?

MartinT
22-03-2013, 12:00
It occurs to me: they're not doing some kind of bittorrent type file sharing around running clients in this new version, are they? What on earth could account for such CPU usage?

MartinT
22-03-2013, 12:04
This is my CPU usage while playing on the work machine; next to nothing.

Tim
22-03-2013, 12:07
So, from what you're saying, there is no visual change between 348 and 349?
Yup, no change visually, they appear exactly the same as your screenshot. I suspect after all the hoohaa on the forum (that started with 348 I think), that 349 might be a rushed patch update, but its even worse. I get very suspicious when programs start using a load more resource in the background. I think I'm going to try the downgrade to 0.8.5 that some folk are doing.

To be honest though Martin, I'm really getting close to binning it as a paid service as I really don't like what they are doing now - it seems a very cynical and deliberate exploitation of their users and very 'Apple' like - which as you know are not at the top of my Christmas card list!

MartinT
22-03-2013, 12:08

It occurs to me: they're not doing some kind of bittorrent type file sharing around running clients in this new version, are they? What on earth could account for such CPU usage?
Now that's a thought that hadn't occurred to me. It is a P2P program and I do have a fast internet connection and a fast machine - are they using me as a super peer node?

Tim
22-03-2013, 12:14
Look what impact shutting down Spotify and starting up JRiver has on playing music - virtually no impact at all.

If they are, they had better make it known VERY CLEARLY in their T&Cs otherwise they are going to incur the wrath of everyone like they've never seen before. Burning our internet connections is not to be undertaken lightly :steam:

Tim
22-03-2013, 12:17
Could that account for my version (349) being different to yours (348) as they are utilising my machine differently due to the speed of my internet connection and my machine specs? If they are, that TICKS ME OFF EVEN MORE especially as I'm a paying customer!

MartinT
22-03-2013, 12:26
Interesting that neither of my clients has offered to upgrade. I only have 4.5M at home but a shiny 100M dedicated leased line at work.

Tim
22-03-2013, 12:34
Whatever is going on, its clear there has been a radical change in direction by their programmers and the user experience for some has changed quite dramatically. The cynical bit for me is the possibility that they might be targeting/utilising machines differently, which is just plain wrong. Most people won't notice, but its becoming apparent that those with a bit of computing knowledge are starting to question what they are up to?

Not sure what you're experiencing here, my Spotify instance is behaving like MartinT's:
Spotify process hoggin up some 100Mb of memory, but utilises less than 3% CPU (on my Quad Core i5 notebook), No visible activity on the Network monitor besides an occasional peak of 3-5%... This is all while streaming High Quality...

Martinh
22-03-2013, 17:35
I have 0.8.8.450 on my core 2 duo 3ghz with 4gb and 20 meg Internet.

CPU is around 3% when playing music.

Network activity was showing next to zero, bu then shot up to a crazy figure, then went back to nearly zero. Odd.

Not sure about the right hand activity pane, but I like the rest of the upgrade.

When you search for an artist, it comes up with tabs for related artists and their biography too, which I like.

Seems ok to me so far.

Martinh
22-03-2013, 17:39
If you go to settings, you can switch off sharing. I've unticked everything.

Martinh
22-03-2013, 17:46
If you google "spotify peer to peer", there's a load of info. Wikipedia says that it uses p2p to supplement their available bandwidth.

MartinT
22-03-2013, 19:00
Yowzer! Good find, Martin. The toe-rags never made that clear to me as a customer.

I don't see any option to disable P2P activity in my version.

Martinh
22-03-2013, 19:28
I wasn't aware either, although it doesn't bother me too much TBH.

It looks like it maybe shares your local files and there's an option to "show" these files. Not sure if "show" means "share" or not?

I use spotify through my sonos, so not sure how this works, as I've got loads of local files connected to that device via my NAS.

Confused?

Martinh
22-03-2013, 21:29
Done a bit more research and it seems that if you cache (store locally) songs for offline listening, these songs can then be seeded via p2p to others. This is to reduce the strain on the spotify servers and increase reliability.

So, if I understand correctly, if you don't store anything for offline playing, you will not be part of the p2p network.

Tats how I understand it - can anyone confirm?

Martinh
22-03-2013, 21:33
I may be wrong - read this http://community.spotify.com/t5/Help-Desktop-Linux-Mac-and/MASSIVE-recent-uptick-in-P2P-streaming-usage/td-p/156184

Tim
22-03-2013, 22:02
Yup, as I stated in post #41 its a P2P (peer-to-peer) program and it always has been from inception and this occurs whether you use off-line mode or not, that's how it works. Skype is P2P also, which a lot of folk don't realise either - each Spotify user is a peer and I suspect they are using my machine as a super peer.

This is why you have a cache folder, its not caching what you are playing its caching content for other peers (users) on the network. Even if you are not playing anything and it is sitting idle, you are sharing content on the Spotify network and using bandwidth - I thought everyone knew this, as its been discussed on here before when Mark (Reid M) was concerned about his cache folder taking up so much hard drive space

MartinT
22-03-2013, 22:16
That could account for my low activity - I never cache anything locally. I'm also going to make the cache folder as small as it will go.

EDIT: 1GB appears to be the smallest size.

Yup, that's what I have Martin - I have thought about setting up a very small RAM Drive and moving the cache folder to that, I have oodles of RAM to mess with. Might be interesting to see if it still works with say a 20MB RAM Drive? I like the idea of it being cleared out everytime I reboot too.

MartinT
22-03-2013, 23:39
That might work. However, even with disk-based cache, it's trivial to erase the contents each time before and/or after running Spotify.

I've looked at my 1GB cache folder - it has 972MB of files in it

MartinT
22-03-2013, 23:44
I deleted the cache contents and restarted Spotify. It immediately rebuild the folder structure and occupied 3.7MB after start-up.

Tim

Mine sits at around 970MB too Martin, I delete it now and again, but mostly leave it alone, as you have noted it rebuilds and grows very quickly. You used to be able to limit it well below 1GB, I think on very early versions of Spotify I used to have it at 100MB. I guess they call it progress, but its all very underhand the way they update stuff without;

Telling you what they are doing
Giving you an option to upgrade or not
Allowing you to downgrade if you don't like the changes
Limit more features in the preferences menu

I still cannot account for why my Spotify installation seems to be using more of my machine than other peoples and the discrepancies with the versions, despite everyone being 'auto-updated' - something fishy going on  There are it seems many more like me from reading reports on the Spotify forum and they mostly seem to be the Premium members too, which is why they are so ticked off.

I think its going to get binned really and I may try Napster, or just stick with it as a free service with ads - its not that I don't have enough music to play

Wikipedia said that it uses p2p to supplement available bandwidth, which implies that the p2p element varies upon demand.

Maybe their bandwidth is being stretched at the moment, with all the auto updates being rolled out?

Could be worth giving it a couple of weeks to see if it settles down?

MartinT

My dilemma is that if I drop down from Premium, I lose the ability to stream to my Touch, a major loss as I use it to evaluate prospective purchases.

Tim
23-03-2013, 10:01
How so Martin, isn't the Touch app different to the PC program, thereby eliminating a lot of the current issues?

MartinT

As far as I know, lesser Spotify accounts won't allow streaming to external devices. That might have changed, I'll look into it.

If its only for evaluation purposes, do what I've done for my dining room set up, buy a cheap Logitech Bluetooth device from PC World, and just use regular Spotify via your lappy or iPad or whatever.

Legally?
i dont get what you mean?
I have Spotify Premium and get the regular one with it, which if I have the iPad with me, i listen to just through its internal speaker, but since getting the Bluetooth gizmo, i use it through my system that doesnt have the Touch in it.

You two have really got me confused now? What is it you're saying?

You need a Premium account to be able to use Spotify in a device, such as an iPhone, iPad or a Sonos device.
You CAN use the same account to connect from your computer and will then have the opportunity to use "High quality streaming".

Craig, are you using another account when accessing Spotify from your computer?

I'm still none the wiser?! But I won't lose any sleep about it! ;)

For everyone else, there's no reason why you can't have Spotify Premium on multiple devices - I've got it on 6 different machines including an iPod Touch and the only restriction I'm aware of is that you can only play one instance at any one time.

Yeah, it's the account that's premium not the software, you can use any machine to log in to it. Indeed, if you're mate uses the free service you could just log in to his version with your account and 'hey-presto' you're using 'Premium'

Well my Spotify power usage woes ended awhile ago, but I didn't post anything. I now have version 0.9.0.133 and right now it only uses about 3% of my CPU across 2 of the 4 cores, so whatever problem they/I had with the earlier version has now been rectified :)

And on a further positive note, I really 'loved' the new Discover button, but since my last update, its gone  They can at times be very frustrating with their development. Fix one thing, f*** another up  I hope my Discover option comes back as I loved it - I see its on the web version now, but not mine?

Is anyone else experiencing glacial start up times for Spotify? Regardless of the machine it usually takes an age for the client to boot up.

Tim
27-05-2013, 14:43
Yes, it connects to all sorts of social media now Dave, even if you don't utilise all the new features, it still has to sync with them, so very slow start up times unfortunately. Its a living thing and seems to change everytime you log on

I would like Spotify to release a stripped down client for those who have no interest in the social media aspects of it. As I have mentioned before, my one nod to modern social media platforms is Twitter, and I use that very rarely

As a Premium user for the past 5 years or so I now feel like a condemned man waiting for the axe to fall.

Mine hasn't updated yet and by the sound of it I am not going to like it when it does.

Most of my Spotting? Spotifying? Spotificationing? though is on my ipod touch which gets daily use. If that isn't too buggered about with I might be able to bear it.

I am one of those lucky people who registered with Spotify before it was integrated with Faecesbook, therefore I don't have to deal with that compromised side of the client. Even so, the horrendously long boot up sequence grates with me and I regret the loss of aspects of the client since FB got involved :(

Back to Spotify: I'm not noticing an inordinate start-up time, about 5s to come fully ready. I published the version of Spotify Premium I'm using earlier.

Back to Spotify: I'm not noticing an inordinate start-up time, about 5s to come fully ready.
Well how sad am I, I just got a stopwatch out

Following boot with a fresh start of Spotify, just under 4s - if I shut it down and start it again later having run already, under 3s . . . so not as long as I thought. It did use to be instant awhile back mind you. I do notice that how you set your machine performance in Power Options has an impact here. If it is set to Balanced or Power Saver, Spotify takes longer to load - set High Performance and its faster. I only know this as I went on a witch hunt around my machine to try and work out why my CPU usage was so high, when they did that major upgrade everyone was moaning about.

All these differing versions seems not to have changed though, still not worked that one out, but as its P2P I have an inclining it might be connected to the hardware. As a matter of interest, my laptop at work still has the Discover button, but my home desktop PC does not  I'm going to check what version I have at work tomorrow.

Anyway, enough of that nonsense - I'm going to listen to Laura Marling again :)

Tim
28-05-2013, 09:20
Now this is very odd - I'm at work now and my desk laptop, which is W7 x64, has it seems the same version of Spotify (need to check the long number) and it still has 'Discover', but my home machine running W7 x64 doesn't, but it did previously.

Discover is really good, tracking what you play and suggesting other artists for you based on your listening habits - one of the new features I love, but why don't I have it on both machines?

Tim
28-05-2013, 18:14
Identical release at home, but no Discover button - now that is odd  I am rather thinking now, it is, as I suspected, dependant on the hardware, as that's the only thing which differs between the two machines.

I have a native account and its not connected or associated with Facebook, or anything else, it sits alone and has a different email address to my regular one too.

Its very odd, I'm sure I'll get Discover at home at some point, but I cannot work out why they are different? Mind you I never got to the bottom of why my home installation was using so much CPU power back when this thread started, even odder  Mind you, there were other users experiencing the same on the Spotify forum, but it was random there too, my only concern then was the extra electricity it was consuming as I'm a real green freak. I think we were supernodes on the P2P network. The only 'real world' difference is that my home address is literally sat next to the exchange, its less than 400M away and my single connection is very fast. Work is a very slow connection with multiple devices operating off one router.

Tim

Solved - it's random so I am one of the lucky ones. I can attest to that fact that its fantastic and I look forward to them rolling it out to everyone :)

Chaps, if any of you have problems running Spotify behind a corporate proxy firewall, or it used to work and doesn't any longer, you need to temporarily put it on bypass so that it logs in and 'reminds' itself of its setup, then it will start behaving properly again.

Methods of doing this will vary; for instance, I added my machine's IP address to our Smoothwall exception list, then changed Spotify's Proxy settings in Preferences to use our HTTPS proxy bypass settings. That then woke it up and it fired up into life. After testing that a song would play, I then reverted the Proxy settings to Auto-detect (will work with most corporate proxies by taking the settings from Internet Options in Control Panel), removed the bypass in Smoothwall and everything has continued to work nicely.

MartinT
29-05-2013, 13:27
The above duplicates just show the efficiency of my own firewall filtering: the word 'proxy' appears too many times, so I got blocked.

Hoist by my own petard :rfl:
