Small room speaker position

I can't find the recent interesting thread about speaker positioning but I thought
it would be useful to show how I have set mine after weeks of experimenting and tearing my hair out. On the sketch A represents were I used to have them and B is were they have ended up. 'A' produced bass boom, 'B' seems to correct that problem and also improves the sense of depth to the sound stage.
Yes, it's an awkward position and not ideal if you use the left hand end of the couch but it works.
Now that I am happy with the speaker position I will try some acoustic treatment to see if I can improve things further.
Hope this might help others with difficult rooms.

Hi Jerry, what about stereo image? do you sit at an angle on the sofa?

If anything Dave the image is improved. No, I sit at the far end of the couch away from the speakers looking towards them. The room looks odd though with one speaker in front of the window.

No surprise you got bass boom with position A.

Position B is what I discovered more than 30 years ago and produced an amazing soundfield in my bedroom. The X I've marked will give the best listening position.

Depending on where you sit, you can rotate the set-up round to try 4 possible listening positions.

Cheers Stephen, I am glad someone else has discovered this! I will have a shuffle on the couch to see if your position is better.

To improve things further, line up some cushions at head height along the back of the sofa ( this stops the left speaker bouncing off the wall into your left ear).

You might be surprised at the improvement - I had a similar setup for a while and the cushions cleared up some of the mid freq muddle.

I remember a 'reader's system' feature in HiFi Choice years ago, where a fellow suspended his speakers from the ceiling and lay on a fully reclined 'Lazyboy' chair, in a box room about 2x3 metres. The reviewer said it worked well, and i always fancied giving it a go, but probably a bit tricky with big Tannoys though ...

Yes, make sure you have some strong fixings or the consequences could be serious........
